G. N. Hughes, county commissioner, died at his home in Nineveh Township last Thursday night about twelve o’clock. He was taken sick three weeks previous with a severe attack of flux but after partially recovering from this, typhoid fever set in terminating in his death. Mr. Hughes was born in 1832 [sic] in Shelby County, Ky., and came with his parents when but a child to Johnson County. His late home was near the site chosen by his parents for a home. Deceased was one of the successful farmers of this county and among its most respected citizens. In 1889 he was elected county commissioner, from the first district, taking his position the following year, Dec. 1890. His term would have expired next December. Mr. Hughes leaves an estate of over 500 hundred acres of good land besides personal property. Three sons survive him. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon conducted by Rev. John C. Wilson. One of the largest processions ever seen in the county followed the remains to their last resting place.

The late G. N. Hughes left no will making disposition of his property. The heirs, consisting of the four sons, John I., Joseph, Henry and Ambrose, and a granddaughter, Sella Beckham, have filed a petition in the circuit court for a partition of the estate. It will be settled without administration.
