Dies At Hospital

Funeral Services
Will Be Friday For
Former Businessman

EDINBURG—A. Porter Hamblen, a former school teacher and retired grocer, died at 9:50 o’clock Tuesday morning in the Johnson County Memorial Hospital.

He had been in failing health for three years and quite ill since last October. A week ago, Mr. Hamblen entered the hospital.

Funeral services have been ar­ranged for 10 o’clock Friday morn­ing in the Mutz Funeral Home with the Rev. Earl Davis, pastor of the Union Christian church, officiating. Burial is to take place in Rest Haven cemetery.

Mr. Hamblen was born in Brown county on Dec. 26, 1875, and his parents were the late Williamson and Eunice Collins Hamblen. He was educated in the schools in that county and at Danville Normal.

In 1897, he was married to Mary J. Anderson and two children were born to them. In 1900, they moved to Oklahoma for a few years, later returning to Indiana and then went to Texas for residence for a while.

Began Teaching

At the age of 16 years, Mr. Ham­blen began his teaching career and taught in the schools in Brown County.

Mr. Hamblen had owned and op­erated two grocery stores while he resided in Franklin. At one time he owned a grocery on Yandes street and also owned and operated a grocery where part of the G. C. Murphy store is now located.

He was a member of the Union Christian church and a 54-year member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. While a resident of Oklahoma, Mr. Hamblen became a member of the Horse Thieves Association and was one of the few living members at the time of his death.

His survivors are the widow, a son, Jennings Bryan Hamblen, of Irvington-in-the-Hudson, N.Y.; and Mrs. Edgar Mayfield, of the Union community.

Also remaining are five grand­children, David Hamblen, of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; Robert William Hamblen, of Akron, Ohio; Mrs. Betty Betts, of Franklin; Mrs. Irma Glick, of Hartsdale; and Mrs. Eunice Lowe, of Westport.

A. Porter Hamblen, 82, a Brown County native, died Tuesday at the Johnson County Hospital at Franklin. Mr. Hamblen lived most of his life in Johnson County.

Born in Brown County Dec. 26, 1875, to Williamson and Eunice L. Collins Hamblen, he was married Jan. 20, 1897, to Mary J. Anderson. He formerly operated a grocery store on Jefferson Street in Franklin and he belonged to the Odd Fellows Lodge, and Union Christian Church.

Funeral services will be held at 10 o’clock Friday morning at Mutz Funeral Home in Edinburg, conducted by Rev. Earl Davis. Burial will be made at Rest Haven Cemetery at Edinburg.

Survivors are the wife; one son, one daughter, five grand­children and thirteen great-grand­children.
