Prominent Religious Worker
Dies in Vets’ Hospital

––––––

J. Carl Goetz, 43, former well known young people’s religious worker in Johnson and Bartholomew counties, died Wednesday night at the Veterans’ hospital in Marion where he was taken suffering with a mental condition a week ago.

Funeral services will be held at 10 o’clock Saturday morning at New Hope Christian church, south of Edinburg, in charge of the Rev. J. E. de Gafferelly. Burial will be made in Rest Haven cemetery at Edinburg.

The body was taken to Columbus to the Hege & Flanagan funeral home and later to the home of a brother, Floyd Goetz.

Mr. Goetz formerly lived at Nineveh, where he operated the Woodruff farm for a number of years. While residing in Johnson county he took an active interest in church and Sunday school work and was a leader in the interdenominational young people’s organization.

For a short time he was a salesman for the Ford auto agency at Edinburg, and later took up similar work at Columbus. He had been employed recently by Noblitt-Sparks Industries in Columbus.

World War Veteran.

A World War veteran and a member of the American Legion, Mr. Goetz made many friends in these associations. Plans were being made today to have military rites conducted at the grave.

He was a member of the Masonic lodge at Edinburg and was affiliated with the Order of Eastern Star at Nineveh.

Mr. Goetz had been in ill health for a number of years, ever since he was acquitted of manslaughter charges in connection with an auto fatality several years ago. A body had been found alongside the roadside and evidence pointed to Mr. Goetz as driver of the car which failed to stop afterward. He had pleaded his innocence in court and had won freedom from the jury, but ever since the accident he had brooded over it.

Surviving relatives include the mother, Mrs. Anna Goetz, with whom he made his home in Union Township, Bartholomew county; the brother, Floyd, and two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Henry, of Petersville, and Mrs. Etta Henry, north of Columbus.

Johnson County relatives include an uncle, James Goetz, of Nineveh; an aunt, Mrs. Sarah Coffman, of Nineveh; and a number of cousins residing in Franklin.
