THOMAS GITHENS.

Thomas Githens, one of the oldest veterans, died at his home in East Franklin at 11:45 o’clock Saturday night, aged eighty-five years eleven months and five days. When recovered he fought in the battles of Stone River, Atlanta, Chickamauga and Lookout Mountain. Late in the year of 1865 he was made regimental blacksmith, from which position he was honorably discharged at the close of the war. Mr. Githens served as an engineer at the Leland Payne mill for twenty-seven years, later at the Indiana Starch Company’s plant and with the late Robert Waggener, and at the death of the latter he retired from active employment.

Mr. Githens is mourned by his wife and four children, Mrs. Charles Deford, Mrs. Dan Israel, Mrs. Taylor Robison and Mrs. Alonzo Fitch.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon. Rev. H. P. Klyver officiated. Burial was at Greenlawn cemetery, under the direction of the G. A. R.
