      EDINBURGH  - Harold Edward Downs, 74, of 13500 U.S. 31 in Edinburgh, died
at 3 p.m. Tuesday at his home.
      Downs was a retired civil service employee, having worked 16 years for the
fire department at Camp Atterbury.  He also had worked for the Bartholomew
Consolidated School Corp. and for the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin.
He was a World War II Navy veteran and a member of Edinburgh American
Legion.
      Funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. George Eagler at 2 p.m.
Friday at Eskew-Eaton Funeral Home in Edinburgh where calling hours will
be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday.  Burial will be at Hawcreek Cemetery.
      Downs was born April 1, 1911, in Bartholomew County, the son of Frank and
Drucilla Gaddis Downs.  He first was married to Flossie Mae Cox.  He then
married the former Nedra Caffee, and she survives.
      Other survivors include a son, Jerry Downs of Edinburgh; two daughters,
Rose Gosnell of Franklin and Marie McFadden of New Albany; a stepdaughter,
Margie Froedge of Edmonton, Ky., and 11 grandchildren.
