UNION TOWNSHIP

HENRY J. DEER

Death of a Prominent Union Township Citizen

Henry J. Deer died last Sunday morning at his home in Union township. He had been in bad health all winter but had been in bed only about ten days.

The funeral, which was held in the Christian church at Union Village Tuesday morning, was one of the most largely attended ever held in the west part of the county. The services were conducted by Elder Daugherty. The burial was at Hopewell and was in charge of the Masonic lodge of Providence. A delegation of Masons from Franklin was in attendance.

Henry Deer was born in Union township May 17, 1840, and had passed his entire life in the township, with the exception of about eight months spent in Martinville. He was married Jan. 17, 1861, to Miss Joanna Simpson and to them were born six children, who with Mrs. Deer are living; they are Louis Deer of Union township, Joseph living in Indianapolis, Ira a resident of Cenarton, Mrs. J. H. Dresslar and Jessie and Bertha, the two latter being at home. All are highly respected as was their father.

Mr. Deer belonged to the Christian church, having united in the fall of ’59, was a member of the Masonic lodge and an earnest Republican. He always took an active part in the work of his party and its councils. He was a man who was not only esteemed but liked by all. For every one he had a cheerful word and when it lay in his power he was always willing to accomodate [sic] his friends. He was a hard worker and attentive to business and had prospered. He will be sadly missed in Johnson county. During his sickness neighbors and friends were very kind and the family appreciate this and wish to express their thanks.
