Death of Mrs. George Coons.
Mrs. Catherine Jane Coons, wife of George Coons, died Monday night at eleven o’clock at her home on east Adams street. Mrs. Coons’ maiden name was Duncan, she being the daughter of Ludwell and Martha Duncan. She was born in Mercer County, Ky., July 17, 1827, and at the time of her death was 67 years and six days old. When three years old she moved with her parents from Mercer to Olden County, and at the age of twenty was united in marriage to George Coons, August 17, 1847. In October, 1854, Mr. and Mrs. Coons came to Johnson county, settling on a farm in Needham township on Hurricane, where they continued to reside until one year ago when they moved into town. On December 9, 1890, Mrs. Coons was stricken with paralysis, which affected her whole body and somewhat obstructed her speech. During the remainder of her life she was confined almost entirely to her bed and since last December, a period of seven months, she has been utterly helpless. A week ago she contracted a slight cold, the effects of which were noticeable in difficult breathing.
During her long sickness Mrs. Coons was never heard to murmur or complain. The patience and resignation with which she bore up under her great affliction were only equaled by the serenity of mind with which she awaited the summons of death. She was a noble woman and bore up under her long sickness with noble gentleness and patience.
She was the mother of nine children, two of whom are dead—a son and daughter. The husband, two sons and five daughters survive. These are William and David Coons, Mrs. Anne Vaught, Mrs. David Crowell, Mrs. Emma Hungate, Mrs. Mary Klingingsmith, of Indianapolis and Miss Susie Coons.
The funeral services were held Wednesday at 11:30 o’clock a.m. at the Hurricane Baptist church of which Mrs. Coons was a member, having united with that church in 1857, under the pastorate of Rev. A. J. Essex, who administered to her the right [sic] of baptism. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. C. H. Hall, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Hurricane cemetery.
