In Memoriam.

To pay a tribute of respect to our loved and lost is always a painful pleasure. Yet as God, in His wisdom, has called one more of our dear one’s home, we would now speak a few words sacred to the memory of Nana Milly Carter, daughter of Dr. J. H. and Phoebe Owens Carter, who died at the age of 17 years and 6 months, after a lingering illness of 49 days of typhoid fever, at the home of her father, in Effingham, Ill., Thursday, June 25, 1896.

A marked characteristic of this young life was a bright, loving disposition, with words of sympathy and deeds of kindness for those about her. Such a disposition never fails to gather and retain many friends, and a host of friends are today saddened by this dispensation of God’s providence.

All that skilled medical aid, loving hearts and kind hands could do was of no avail, and she entered the great beyond. Though young in years, she had learned to love the Saviour, and was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Effingham, Ill. In the last days of her sickness she prayed for a blessing on her dear ones and help for herself, saying “she would like to get well, but was prepared to die.” There is a vacancy in the home and hearts of those most dear to her that cannot be filled, but beautiful hands are just over the river, beckoning us to our dear one, where all is peace, love and rest.

The remains were brought to Franklin early Saturday morning and taken to the home of James Owens and wife, east of the city. Funeral services were conducted by Dr. W. T. Stott at Second Mt. Pleasant church, June 27, at ten a.m. after which her body was placed in our beautiful city of the dead, by the side of her dear mother. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, attesting in their silent way of love and friendship for Nana, and of sympathy for those so sadly bereft. God in his wisdom doeth all things best and by and by we shall understand. Now we humbly say “Thy will be done.”
