Death of Commodore Brown.
Commodore Brown, who was serving a sentence at Jeffersonville, died Saturday afternoon about three o’clock. He had been sick with measles a short time but no fears were entertained of any serious results by the attendants until Saturday when congestion of the lungs set in and terminated fatally in a few minutes.
The circumstances connected with Brown’s imprisonment and his death are such as to arouse much sympathy. His relatives are among the most highly respected in the county. Until the trouble arose for which he was arrested and convicted, Brown had borne a good reputation. The news that he had been arrested for stealing clover seed from Wayne Covert came as a great surprise to everybody. Many expressions of regret and sympathy for the friends of Brown were heard on all sides. His death recalls to mind the request he made on the eve of being taken to Jeffersonville. Wayne Covert, from whom he had taken the clover seed is the undertaker at Providence and in speaking to him after the trial Brown said, “Well, Wayne, I will not come back from Jeffersonville alive and I want you to bury me.” Nothing more was thought of the remark until the announcement of his death recalled it. In accordance with that request, Mr. Covert went to Jeffersonville and brought the remains back to this city on the 10:20 train Sunday night. The funeral was held Monday, Joseph Deer conducting brief services. Burial at Bluff Creek.
