WEST LAFAYETTE , Ind. — Josephine Mardis Branigin, widow of former Gov. Roger D. Branigin, died Saturday at age 80.
She was born in Shelbyville and graduated cum laude from Franklin College in 1929. During that year she married Branigin, who served as Indiana’s 42nd governor, from 1965 to 1968. The retired Lafayette attorney died Nov. 19, 1975.

Former Franklin resident Josephine Branigin, 80, died Saturday morning at Westminister Health Care Center, West Lafayette.
A West Lafayette resident since 1938, she was born Feb. 4, 1908, in Shelbyville to Joseph R. and Minnie (Eschmeier) Mardis. On Nov. 2, 1929 in Shelbyville, she married Roger D. Branigin, who served as Indiana governor from 1965 to 1969. He died Nov. 19, 1975.
Mrs. Branigin graduated from Franklin College in 1929. She was a member of Franklin First Baptist Church, Delta Chi sorority, Tri-Kappa and Pi Beta Phi. She also did volunteer work in Lafayette.
Surviving her are a son, Roger D. Branigin Jr. of West Lafayette, seven grandchildren and twin great-grandsons. A son, Franklin resident Robert M. Branigin, died Sept. 1, 1987. A brother and two sisters also preceded her in death.
The Rev. Alan G. Trent will conduct the service Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Franklin First Baptist Church. Friends may call tonight at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel from 5 to 8. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Franklin.
