Former Center Grove High School principal Loran E. Bills, 82, Bargersville, died Friday at Franklin Healthcare Center.
Born July 5, 1897, in Nineveh township, to Elmer and Leona (Gosney) Bills, he was married to Sylvia Herring in 1918. Bills was a graduate of Nineveh High School and Franklin College and received his master’s degree from Butler University.
A teacher in Nineveh, Bargersville and Clark township schools, Bills was the principal of Center Grove High School until he retired in 1947. Bills was a navy veteran of World War I and served on the local Selective Service Board during World War II. He also worked at the county extension office placing prisoners-of-way[sic] at work on farms in Johnson county.
After World War II, he was the state director of war bond sales for 15 years and until 1977 worked at Orchard Golf Course in Greenwood.
A member of Bargersville Christian Church and a Sunday school teacher for 15 years, Bills was also a member of Murat Shrine in Indianapolis, a life member of Edinburgh Masonic Lodge, American Legion 40 and 8 and Past Commander of American Legion Post No. 205.
Bills was also a member of the Hillview Country Club, El Dorado Country Club and a former member of Franklin Elks Lodge and Franklin Lions Club.
Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at Vandivier-Tudor Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Rev. Ralph Spencer will officiate and friends may call after 2 p.m. Sunday.
Survivors include his daughter. Anita Windisch, Bargersville; one brother, Nelson Bills, Princes Lake; one sister, Georgia Critzer, Culver City, Calif.; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one brother, and one sister.
