DEATH OF ABRAM BERGEN
––––––––
Prominent Citizen and Good Man
Passes Away.
Abram Bergen, one of the pioneers of Johnson county and one of its best known citizens died Tuesday night at ten o’clock at his home in this city on South Main Street.
He was born Sept 7, 1818 in Henry county, Ky., and came with his father, Garrett Bergen to this county when but thirteen years of age. His father settled on a farm north of Franklin where Abram grew to manhood. This farm is now owned by Peter Banta.
Mr. Bergen for many years lived on the now vacant lot opposite the First Baptist church and carried on a currying shop on the present site of S. O. Yager’s store, the hides being prepared at his tannery in Brown county. Mr. Bergen afterwards moved to Georgetown, Brown County and conducted in person a tannery there for thirteen years, when he returned to Franklin where he continued to reside until his death.
His first marriage was to Miss Sarah E. Henderson whose life was suddenly cut off by being thrown from a buggy in 1876. His second marriage was to Miss Fannie K. Warner who survives him.
To the first union were born two sons, A. N. Bergen now residing in this city and Rev. S. S. Bergen, pastor of the Presbyterian church at Bellville, Pa.
Mr. Bergen all his life was a member of the Presbyterian church and a man whose life and religion walked hand in hand. He served as elder both in the church at Georgetown and in this city and was always a faithful and active member. Kind and cheerful in disposition, consistent and honest in all his dealings, he deserved and held the highest esteem of all. He leaves behind him the recollection of a life well spent and one that would profit the living to strive to emulate.
The funeral services will take place this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock in the Presbyterian church conducted by the pastor, Rev. L. P. Marshall. Friends can have an opportunity of viewing the remains at the residence from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. Interment at the family lot in Greenlawn cemetery.
