Death of James M. Alexander.
Madison Alexander one of the well-known pioneers of the county and a most estimable citizen, died Monday afternoon at one o’clock, at his home just south of town. He had been in poor health all winter, but during the month of February his health improved considerably, enabling him to come to town on pleasant days. He again became worse about two weeks ago and declined rapidly.
Deceased was born in Tennessee, Oct. 9, 1818. His father, who also became a resident of this county, where he died in 1878, was a native of South Carolina, and his mother a native of North Carolina. The death of the latter occurred in this county in 1831.
Deceased came to this county with his parents in 1827. At the age of sixteen he began to work out at $5 per month, and continued as a farm hand for six years, when he began farming for himself.
He was married in 1839 to Miss Elizabeth Keneaster, whose death occurred Feb 5, 1888. To this union were born seven sons, two of whom are living, N. W. Alexander and J. P. Alexander.
Mr. Alexander settled on the farm south of town where he died in 1854. In 1861 he was elected county commissioner serving until 1864, and during his official service made an excellent and careful officer. In business he was successful and honorable in all his dealing, gaining and holding the respect of all with whom he came in contact. The record of his life is that of one well spent, and in his death Johnson county loses one of its most worthy citizens.
The funeral occurred Wednesday afternoon at half past one o’clock at his residence south of this city, conducted by Rev. C. H. Hall. Burial at Greenlawn cemetery.
