W. W. Aikens and wife have the sympathy of the entire community in the death of their eldest daughter, Mary, which occurred Tuesday morning. She was taken with scarlet fever which terminated in inflammation of the brain and caused death. Her illness was of short duration and but a few days prior to her death, hers was a familiar face among those attending the public schools. One who knew her well says: “In school there were few like her. She was an ideal scholar. Punctuality and promptness was her motto. For four years she had not missed a day and not once was a tardy mark ever placed opposite her name on the enrollment book. She was loved by all her teachers for her persistent efforts to master what came before her.” Private funeral services were held Thursday morning at ten o’clock at the residence, conducted by Rev. L. P. Marshall. The remains were temporarily interred in Greenlawn, but later will be taken to Ohio for final burial. [sic]
