JOHN S ABBETT
Having developed double lobar pneumonia after a few days’ illness, John S. Abbett, age 70, well known Johnson county retired farmer, passed away at 9 o’clock Wednesday morning at the Irvington Sanitarium, where he had been a patient for the past two days.
The body has been brought to the Vandivier parlors here, where services will be conducted at 10 o’clock Friday morning by the Rev. James P. Wilbur of the Baptist church. Burial will take place in the Hamner cemetery, six miles south of Franklin. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home at any time.
Mr Abbett was born in this country on December 8, 1870, and was one of eight children of Andrew and Nancy Crane Abbett. He had been a farmer of Johnson county all his life until retiring some time ago. He was a resident of the Smiley Mill community, five miles east of Franklin. Of the eight children in his family, only three are now living. They are Mrs. Garrett Reek and Mrs. Chester Bittner, both of Indianapolis, and Roscoe Abbett, of Edinburgh.
He was married to Miss Clara Jane Scott in 1891, and she passed away November 23, 1927. Nine children were born to this union, seven of who are living. They are Byron Abbett, Lloyd Abbett, Mrs. E. C. Mathis and Mrs. Roscoe Smith, all of Franklin; Tillus Abbett, of New Albany; Alba Abbett, of Edinburgh rural route two; and Mrs. Maurice Conway, of Scottsburg.
Twenty-one grandchildren also survive. Mr. Abbett was a member of the Amity Baptist church, and belonged to the Red Men and Haymaker lodges in Franklin.

John S. Abbett, age 70, well known retired county farmer, was laid to rest in the Hamner cemetery six miles south of Franklin, Friday morning following services at 10 o’clock at the Vandivier funeral home here.
Rites were in charge of the Rev. James Wilbur, Baptist minister. Casket bearers were Tillus Gillaspy, Robert Medsker, George Taylor, Artie Harrison, Melvin Owens and Byron Webb.
Mr. Abbett, a resident of the Smiley Mill community, died Wednesday morning in Irvington of double pneumonia. He was a native of this county, and is survived by two sisters, a brother, seven children and 21 grandchildren.
He was a member of the Amity Baptist church, and the Red Men and Haymaker lodges in Franklin.
