Smyth County was formed in 1832 from
Wythe and Washington counties.

Smyth shares boundary lines with Washington, Russell,
Tazewell, Bland, Wythe and Grayson Counties.

The county was named for General Alexander Smyth, who had represented the area in Congress.

Marion is the county seat. The town was named for General
Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox" of the Revolutionary War.

Smyth is spanned by the "Great Rock Road"
(now Highway #11, more or less),
thousands of pioneer families trekked through
Smyth County on their way to Kentucky, Tennessee and on westward.
