William Campbell

October 09, 1823

William Campbell was 20 years old, 5’ 10" tall, a "bright" mulatto, and had scars on both his chin and the little finger of his left hand. He was born free, and listed in the Court Order Book number 22 page 281.

George Briggs, alias George Spradlin

March 03, 1825

George Briggs was 22 years old, 5’6" tall, a "bright" mulatto, had a large black mole on his neck, and had a scar on each of his forefingers. He was born free, and the son of Betsy Spradlin, who was a free white woman. Briggs was listed in the Court Order Book number 23 on page 21, and again on July 2, 1860 as the alleged victim of a felony of James Moore in 1860.

Robert Hendley

February 06, 1827

Robert Hendley was about 50 years old, 5’6" tall, yellow complected, and partially bald. He was listed as a free man of colour with his five children. He was listed in the Court Order Book number 23 on page 289.

Matilda Hunt

September 05, 1827

Matilda Hunt was 27 years old, 5’8" tall, dark complected, had a large scar on her right hand from a burn, and also had two small scars over her right eye. She was born free and the daughter of Jenny Hunt who was bound out by William Wade. She was listed in the Court Order Book number 22 on page 89.

Alexander Pagee

Alexander was 28 years old, 5’7" or 5’7" tall. He had a dark complexion with a small scar between the eyes and another scar on his right hip from a burn. Pagee was born free.

Milly alias Mary Ann

November 1, 1831

Mary Ann was 60 years old at time of the census. She was 5’7" tall with black complexion a small scar between the eyes and a small back mole on her right side of her face. Last will and testament of Mary Carlton (WB 3/77 August 22, 1819, Item 6) and deed of manumission by Susannah Carlton (WB 3/138, September 7, 1819). Renew register on 186(?)

Jane Burks

She was 38 years old and 5’3" tall. She was the daughter of Hannah Campbell and born free. She had two small scars on her right arm from a dog bite.

Elmira Campbell (a.k.a Ellen)

December 6, 1831

Ellen was 24 years old and 5’3" tall. She was the daughter of Hannah Campbell and born free. She was a bright mulatto with a large scar on her right arm from a burn. Renewed at 3rd of May Court, 34 years old (COB 29/207); and at 3rd of June Court – had scar on left cheek and was 54 years of age.

He was 20 years old and 5’10" tall. He was the son of Polly (who obtained her freedom in Montgomery County Court in August 1820), (COB 21/96). He had a black complexion with a lame right leg produced by white swelling, and small scar on his hip.

Sally was 18 years old and 5’3" tall. She had a black complexion with no scars. She was the daughter of Polly (who obtained her freedom in August 1820 at the Montgomery County Court), (COB 21/96).

Ann Mars

May, 26, 1834

She was 25 years old and 5’1" tall. She was a bright mulatto with small scar on the left side of her face. She also scar on her left hand with tolerable large round eyes. Ann was born free.

Samuel Marrs

He was 25 tears old and 6’2". He was born of free parents in Franklin County, Virginia. He is a colored mulatto with a spot below the right arm, a scar just above the right hip, and one on the middle finger of his left hand. Register made by Franklin county Court Clerk Caleb Tate on August 3, 1833

He was 12 years old and 4’6" tall. He is of dark complexion with no apparent scars. He was also born free.

He was 55 years old and 5’11". He was of dark color, had a piece bitten off his left ear, and a scar across his left hand. He was freed by Judgement of the county Court of Wythe on August 10, 1820, by John P. Mathews, Clerk. Registered in Wythe County , June 12 , 1823.

She was 25 years old and 5’6". She was a bright mulatto, had a small scar on right hand with dark eyes and hair. She was born free to Hannah Campbell, also free. Registration certified on August 3, 1835 (COB 26/251)

She was 27 years old and 5’8’’. She is a bright mulatto with small scar on left wrist from a burn, a scar on left cheek, and black hair and grey eyes. She was born free of Hannah Campbell, also a free woman. Certified in court on August 3, 1835 (COB 26/251)

James Ligon

August 3, 1835

He was 27 years old and 5’8". He was very black, had two small scars over his right eye, several small scars on the right hand, and had his two middle fingers of the right hand cut off. He was the son of Sarah, who was emancipated by deed from Robert Shanklin (WB 1/267). Certified in court on August 3, 1835 (COB 26/251)

Caleb

May 02, 1836

Caleb was 41 years old, 5’4" tall, black complected, and had scars over his right eye and on his right wrist. He also had swelling in his left foot which caused him to have a lame leg. Caleb was partially balding. He was Certified in County Court on May 2, 1836 and part of the 22 slaves from Abram Deyerlee’s estate. He was emancipated by a deed executed by Thomas Deyerlee on March 23, 1835 and it was recorded on July 11, 1835. Caleb had a son named Thomas.

David Webster

June 05, 1838, R. D. Montague, Clerk

David Webster was 53 years on, born on October 28, 1785, and 5’7-1/2" tall. He was black complected, had coarse African features, was stout and fleshy, had clouded fingernails, a small bald spot, and scars on the right side of his neck and on the instep of his right foot. Webster was emancipated by deed executed by David Barnett on June 05, 1838, which was recorded on the same day and witnessed by James R. Kent and Charles Black.

Anderson Nugan

Anderson Nugan was 26 years old, 5’6" tall, with a "bright" complexion, and had a small scar on the forefinger of his left hand. He was born a free man.

Dorman Brown

October 07, 1839, R. D. Montague, Clerk

Dorman Brown was 30 years old, 5’10" tall, had a dark complexion, and he had no marks or scars. He was born free and noted to be a person of orderly conduct. His state was renewed on September 07, 1846 at age 37 and he had a small scar on his left had at this point. Brown was going bald and married to Margaret Brown.

Bill alias Billy Moon

Billy Moon was 52 years old, 5’10" tall, yellow complected, had no scars or marks, had short reddish hair, and possessed a high forehead. He was emancipated by deed from Jacob Price on September 30, 1837 and it was recorded on December 04, 1837.

Granville

November 04, 1839, R. D. Montague, Clerk

Granville was 45 years old and 5’9" tall. He had a yellow complexion, bushy hair, a mole on his nose, a crooked forefinger on the left hand, a scar on the nail of his little finger of his left hand, and a one in his right leg was broken above the ankle. He was emancipated by deed from Elijah McClanahan in Boutetourt County on June 10, 1834 and this was then recorded in Montgomery County.

Hercules Marrs

September 08, 1840

Hercules Marrs was 30 years old and 5’11’ tall. He was yellow complected and had a scar on his left hand. He was born of free parents and produced a court register which was made in Franklin County.

Samuel Campbell

April 05, 1841

Samuel Campbell was 47 years old and 5’6-1/2" tall. He was a black man, had a scar on the edge of his hair on the left side of his forehead, a high forehead, and his right thigh was broken, which made him lame. He was emancipated by the last will and testament of Mary Tease on May 30, 1806 in the County of Bedford (COB 29/201). He was registered in Bedford County on November 24, 1823 at the age of 29, and in the D.U. 78 (Rice D. Montague) in the 1860 Census.

Lewis Raiford

September 06, 1847

He was 25 years old and 5’7" tall. He was the son of Betsey Raiford who was a free black woman. Raiford had a yellow complexion and had small scars on the lower joint of his little finger on his right hand and another on his right leg.

Malinda Russel

August 06, 1844

Malinda Russel was 25 years old and stood 5’3" tall. She was a dark mulatto who had dark curly hair and a scar over her left eye. She was registered in the County Court of Washington, Tennessee in 1843 and produced her register in the Montgomery County Court.

Matilda Hunt. Jr.

July 07, 1834

Matilda Hunt, Jr. was 30 years old and about 5’2" tall. She was a "bright" mulatto with a scar on her left arm below the elbow from a burn. She was born free (COB 30/305).

Gabriel

October 06, 1845

Gabriel was 47 years old and 5’10" tall. He had a dark complexion, was large and stout with grey whiskers, and had a scar on each hand near his thumb. He was emancipated by a deed of Charles Taylor on May 29, 1837 and Polly Taylor on September 01, 1845.

Frank

October 06, 1845

He was 40 years old and 5’8" tall. He was dark complected, tolerably large, and had small lumps in his breast produced by a blister. He was emancipated by a deed of Charles Taylor on May 29, 1837 and Polly Taylor on September 01, 1845.

Gilbert was 31 years old and 5’5-1/2" tall. He had a black complexion and a small scar on the middle finger of his left hand. He was emancipated by a deed of Charles Taylor on May 29, 1837 and Polly Taylor on September 01, 1845.

21 years of age on April 1, 1846, 5’6". Has bright complexion and scar over the right eye just below the edge of the hair. Born Free. Bound by the overseer of the poor to John R. Guerrant and served out her apprenticeship.

Stuart alias Stuart Crockett

He was born on November 16, 1835. He was 5’8" tall with dark complexion and a small scar in the corner of his left eye. Emancipated by Charles Taylor on May 29, 1837 (WB 7/273), and by deed of Polly Taylor on September 5, 1846 (WB 7/333). Stuart was the son of Phillis (WB 7/273).

Rhoda was born May ? 1838, and was 4’0" tall. She had a dark complexion with small scar on her left cheek. Her was inclined to be red. Emancipated by deed of Polly Taylor dated September 5, 1846 (WB 7/333).

She was born on October 10, 1840 and was of dark colour with no scars or marks. She was 3’10" tall. Emancipated by deed of Polly Taylor dated September 5, 1846 (WB 7/333).

Amanda

She was born October 10, 1840 and was 3’10" tall (same as Mary). Amanda had a dark complexion with a small black mark or spot behind her left ear. Emancipated by deed of Polly Taylor dated September 5, 1846 (WB 7/333).

Solomon

September 7, 1846

Solomon was 53 years old and 5’5" tall. Emancipated by deed of Charles Taylor dated May 29, 1837, and by deed of Polly Taylor on Sept 1, 1845 (WB 7/273). He was black with several scars on his breast, a scar above his left eye (thick lips, under lip projecting) and a large scar on his left leg.

James alias James Niece

October 5, 1846

James was 44 years old and 5’8-1/2". He was of bright complexion with a scar on his right temple with large whiskers and one of his front teeth was out (COB 31/22). Emancipated by a deed of Mary Wade dated October 5, 1846 (WB 7/341). See also #89, James Nease.

Anthony alias Anthony Liggon

February 1, 1847

Anthony was 66 years old with a bright complexion a scar on his forefinger of his right hand and several of his front teeth were out. He was also 5’8" tall. Emancipated by deed of Samuel Barnett on February 1, 1847 (WB 7/377), (COB 31/40).

Josiah Day *

February 26, 1847, R.D. Montague, Clerk

Josiah was born July 4, 1823 and was 5’6" tall in his boots. Registered in Pittsylvania County as a free man of colour (#405, December 17, 1846). On December 17, 1846 he was entered as having brown complexion, 23 years of age. He had a scar on his left hand opposite of his little finger and no other apparent mark or scar. Certified December 22, 1846 by William H. Tunstall Clerk of the County Court of Pittsylvania; 1866 Marriage Register, m. Charlotta Gilbert; Snowville P.O. – 1867.

Abram was 37 years old and 5’6-1/2" tall. He had black complexion with large whiskers and a scar on the back of his left hand and on his left arm. King alias King James

King was 53 years old and 5’6" in height. He had a black complexion, was stout, had a black scar on his left shin, a wen on his right side, a scar on his breast, and some black moles under his right eye. King was emancipated by the last will and testament of Philip Kinser on June 16, 1848 and this was prvd. on November 05, 1849. He had his registration certified on June 04, 1850 and he re-registered as no. 111 on November 01, 1858.

Oceann Chapman

July 05, 1852

Oceann Chapman was 21 years old and 5’6" tall. She had black skin color, crooked little fingers, and was missing a small section out of the lower part of her right ear. Oceann was born free in Christiansburg and was the daughter of Ann Hunt. (COB 31/454).

Eliza was 18 years old and 5’1-1/2" in height. She had a very dark complexion. Eliza was the daughter of Adeline who was emancipated by deed from Charles Taylor, deceased, dated May 29, 1837 (WB 7/273).

He was 14 years old and 4’11". He was very black with no marks or scars. Thomas was the son of Adeline, who was emancipated by deed dated May 29, 1837, from Charles Taylor, deceased (WB 7/273)

Caroline Campbell

July 4, 1853

She was 49 years old and 4’11". Caroline was a bright mulatto with no scars and her little finger of the left hand cut off. She was born free in Montgomery County and daughter of Hannah Campbell, a free woman (COB 32/98). Head of household -1840 census, D.U. 3-1850 census, D.U. 18, Christiansburg-1860 census, Christiansburg-1867 census.

Sarah Jane Campbell

July 4, 1853

She was 19 years old and 5’2". Sarah was a bright mulatto with no scars or marks but had a small mole on left side of mouth. She was born free and was the daughter of Caroline Campbell, a free woman, (COB 32/98). Renewed register June 3, 1861 at 27 years of age (COB 1859-1861), D.U. #18- 1860 census.

Isaac Lester

He was 23 years old and 5’9". Isaac is of black complexion, has a large mouth, flat nose, and a scar on the left arm about 5"-6" above the elbow. He was born free. Renewed register at October 4, 1858 Court, at 27 years old, 5’9-1/2", no other scars or marks.

James Nease

Anderson Duke

February 5, 1855

He was 39 years old and 5’5". Anderson was a bright mulatto with a scar on the back of the left forefinger where it joins the hand, and 2 small scars upon the forehand near the hair. He was born free and registered as a free man in the Hustings Court of Staunton in August 1849 when he was 33 years of age. Renewed by clerk, September 2, 1861.

Granville Williams

May 7, 1855

He was 21 years old and 5’5". Granville was very black and had a large scar on the left side of his face occasioned by a burn. There is satisfactory evidence that he was born free (COB 32/334). Indentures to Floyd Smith , 1847 (COB 31/91), transferred to George Keister in 1851 (COB 31/359); D.U. 33 - 1850 census.

Floyd Dobbins

August 6, 1855

He was 21 years of age and was 5’9". Floyd is a very bright mulatto, has a scar on right arm below the elbow, one on his left wrist about 1 ½" long, one large one on the inside of the little finger of left hand. All were occasioned by cuts. He was born free in Montgomery County (COB 32/374). July 2, 1838 (COB 21/167), bound to Christopher Willis; possibly the son of John Dobbins; D.U. 488 - 1860 census, Childress Store, as Floyd Wilson. 1866 Marriage register , m. Lurana Phillips. 1867 census - Snowville post office.

Ann Hunt

August 7, 1855

She was 47 years old and 5’5". Ann was very black and had a large triangular scar above the left eye, and small one on the left side of her nose. All were occasioned by cuts (COB 32/379). There is satisfactory evidence that she was born free in Montgomery County.

Spencer Bright

November 6, 1855

He was 41 years old and 5’9". Spencer was very black, had a large flat nose, a scar on the little finger of his left hand, small scar over right eye, was of large stature, and his ring finger of left hand was broken. He was emancipated by deed of Mary Wade, November 5, 1855, recorded same day (WB 8/646). Reregistered as #127 on August 3, 1863 (last entry in register). 1867 census - Christiansburg P.O.

Rhodda Liggon

50 years old and 5’4". She was very black with a scar on the left elbow. She was free born to satisfaction of the court. Freed with mother , Sarah, by Robert Shanklin (WB 1/267 April 4, 1806); Rhodda’s children – Washington, Catherine and Ann Ligon – bound to Joseph King, March 7, 1836 (COB 26/289). Agnes Liggon

Martha Shaver was 25 years old and 5’1" in height. She had a dark complexion and a large goiter on her neck. She was a free person and produced satisfactory evidence to the Court. DU 63 in Christiansburg in the 1860 Census.

Mary Shaver alias Chavis

Mary Shaver was 23 years old and 5’5-1/2" in height. She was dark complected and had two small black moles on her forehead. She provided satisfactory evidence to the court that she was a free person. She was in the DU in Christiansburg in the 1860 Census and the P.O. in the 1867 Census.

Catherine Shaver alias Chavis

June 02, 1857

Catherine was 17 years old and 4’11" in height. She was a dark mulatto with a mark on her right cheek. She produced satisfactory evidence to the Court that she was free and her situation was copied on June 11, 1861.

Elizabeth Shaver

August 03, 1857

Elizabeth Shaver was 25 years old and 5’6" tall. She was a very "bright" mulatto with a scar on the right side of her neck. She was born free and provided satisfactory evidence to the court to prove her situation. Elizabeth was the wife of Thomas Shaver and listed in the DU 747 of Lovely Mount in the 1860 Census record.

Andrew Young

August 03, 1857

Andrew Young was 22 years old and 5’9" tall. He was a bright mulatto with a large scar on his right ankle and another on the shin of his left leg. He was born free and according to the 1866 Blacksburg Marriage Register wed to Elisa Hendrick. He was in the Blacksburg PO for the 1860 Census.

Robert Payne

February 01, 1858

Robert Payne was 31 years old and 5’8-1/2" in height. He had a broken little finger on his left hand which was enlarged at his second joint and stiff, a broken and stiff ring finger on his left hand, and a scar on his right forefinger knuckle. He was the son of Sally Cato to whom he was born a free mulatto in Amherst County on July 31, 1826. He was registered in Amherst County on May 15, 1832 as number 66 in the DU 1319. Robert was listed in the Montgomery Spring records in 1860 and the Christiansburg PO in 1867. He married Delcie Flagens.

Nelson Jackson

March 01, 1858

Nelson was 26-27 years old and 5’7-1/2" tall with mulatto complexion. He produced a register from Charlotte County to the court stating he was free as of December 06, 1852. He was also listed in the Allegheny Spring Census of 1867.

James Mars

September 05, 1858

James was 22 years old and 5’11" in height. He was a dark mulatto with a scar on his left hand near his wrist. Mars was born free and the son of Hercules Marrs. There was a new copy of his Register furnished by the Order of the Court on June 03, 1861.

Elsey Ann Mars

September 06, 1858

Elsey was 25 years old and 5’8" tall. She was a dark mulatto with a scar on her left cheek bone. She was born free and the daughter of Hercules Mars.

Charles Mars

October 04, 1858

Charles was 21 years old and 5’7" tall. His complexion was dark copper colored, the second toe on his right foot had been cut off at the joint, his right thigh had been broken, he had a scar on his left hand near his thumb, and another one on his left arm above his wrist. He was born free in Montgomery County to Hercules Mars. In 1851 (COB 29/202) he was indentured to Adam Fisher. In the 1850 Census he was found in the DU 115 and in 1867 he was listed in Peppers Ferry.

Mary Jane Mars

October 04, 1858

Mary Jane Mars was 22 years old, 5’5-3/4" tall, had a yellow complexion, possessed a small scar on her forehead, and had a burn scar on her right arm. She was born free in Montgomery County to Hercules Mars, and on May 30, 1867 she was married to a North Carolina Laborer named Jacob Armstrong, age 48, in Giles County. She was found in the DU 115 in the 1850 Census and the DU 1363 for the 1860 Census in Christiansburg.

King James

November 01, 1858

King James was 61 years old and 5’6" tall. He had a black complexion, stout build, scar on his left leg, wen on his right side, a scar on his breast, and some black moles under his right eye. He was emancipated by the last will and testament of Philip Kinser, deceased, on June 16, 1848 according to the Will Book 8, page 69. There was a register renewal in the minutes of the Court and the initial register in the Court was on June 04, 1850 and in the DU 152 of 1850 Census.

Joshua Lawrence

He was 29 years old and 5’8". He was a dark mulatto with a scar between the eyes (nearest to and rather above the left eye) and a scar on the right thigh. There was satisfactory evidence produced to court that he was free born (COB October 6, 1862). Joshua was murdered on July 26, 1864 by Vincent Ferguson (COB August 1, 1864; circuit court order book 4, p. 393, September 12, 1864). D.U. 292 - 1850 census.

Spencer was black, was of large stature, had scar on little finger of left hand, ring finger of same hand was broken, and he had a small scar over right eye. He was emancipated by Mary Wade on November 5, 1855 and recorded the same day (WB 8/646; COB August 3, 1863).

Rasmus Beverly

September 2, 1861. Was 21 years old and 5’7". Light mulatto with no scars or marks. One of six children of Mattison (Madison) Beverly in the 1866 marriage register. Free born, produced satisfactory evidence to the court.
