Mecklenburg County was formed in 1765, from the part of Lunenburg County that was
St. James Parish. (St. James Parish was formed in 1761 when Cumberland Parish was divided.)
It was named in honor of Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who
became Queen of England on her marriage to King George III.
Boydton is
the county seat.
