MARTHA HARRIS STRONG DIARY 1922-1995

SURNAME LIST 1922-1965

Mrs. Strong lived in Beaverdam, Virginia, from 1902-1995. She began a journal just before her marriage to William Atwell Strong in 1922 and made daily entries about the people and events in her community until the day she died. Most entries are brief about the comings and goings from her house near the intersection of Rocky Ford Road and Shiloh Church Road. She was active at Shiloh Church and with the Rebecca Lodge; Mr. Strong was in the Oddfellows and a Republican Party leader. They come in contact with a surprising number of people in their daily lives. Births, marriages, and deaths are noted, as are many ordinary events in the Western Hanover area.

The Page Library received a grant from the Virginia Genealogical Society (VGS) in 1999 to provide greater access to the Strong diary. A detailed index is being created noting the entry dates for proper names, including people and places, with the exception of close family members and co-workers who are mentioned almost daily. There are approximately 3,000 individuals and places named in the first 43 years of the diary which have been indexed to date.

Continuing research is taking place in the form of interviews with local residents to enhance understanding of the diary contents. A second grant has been provided by VGS to transcribe the oral history recordings that are part of the collection at the Page Library. In addition, new recordings are being created.

The diary, index, and oral histories are available at the Page Library. Hours are 6 p.m.-9 p.m. on Mondays, and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Please feel free to visit, write or call – e-mail is not available at this time.

We would also be happy to receive copies of other family histories, photographs, letters, recordings, etc. which relate to Western Hanover County.

The following is a surname list of the diary which has been indexed through 1965. In many cases, there are multiple given names indexed for a surname.
