This index to the Gloucester County Surveyor's Book 1(1817-1849) was compiled as part of an early records survey sponsored by the Gloucester County Historical and Bicentennial Committee in 1976 as part of an early records survey sponsored by the Gloucester County Historical and Bicentennial Committee. It is an index of names appearing on the plats and in the surveyors' explanations. It is patterned after the index we have already compiled for the 1833 - 1806 surveyors' book and includes all personal and place names appearing on the plats. The index, therefore, is far more complete than the short index at the back of the volume.

We have adopted several conventions in preparing the index. An asterisk after a page number indicates that a person was a principle owner of the land surveyed or a principle in a dispute over the land. The other names listed are of chairmen, owners of adjoining land, jurymen or commissioners. Alternative spelling of surnames appear in parentheses beside the original spellings appearing on the plats. Maiden names of married women are supplied in parentheses where possible. Locations are included when a distinguishing landmark appears on the plat or when the surveyor specified a location in his notes. Geographical landmarks, plantation names and some topical items are included in the index.
