On Aug. 13, 1832, George Callis of Mathews Co., Virginia,
age 72. declares that he served under Capt. Philip Tabb, Ens.
George Tabb and Col. James Baytop. "He was not on muster
list when Lord Dunmore came to Gwynn's Island but was called out
soon after and went out off and on until siege of Yorktown. He
was on the enemy's line at the siege of York and left service
after the siege about Oct. 1781." He was b. in Kingston Parish;
d. in Mathews Co., Feb. 21, 1843; m. Elizabeth _______ (she was
72 on Jan. 28, 1866). On Oct. 20, 1833, Richard Hurst and William
Digges declare they served in the Rev. War with George Callis
who belonged to the company of John Billups of Gloucester Militia
commanded by Col. (Sir) John Peyton. He was part of the time attached
to Philip Tabb's company. He entered service in 1777 and was discharged
in the fall of 1781. He was with them at Williamsburg, Jamestown,
Hubbard's Old Field, Ware Church, Seawell's Old Field and Gloucester
Towne; served as Pvt. in regiment of Col. Baytop in the Virginia
Line for 10 months. W. 1444. Pension Application (Elizabeth).
