I began by looking for my Smoot ancestors and attempting to link my lineage to the book "The Smoots of Maryland and Virginia" by Harry Wright Newman. With help from my father, James Ernest Smoot it became apparent that my line was from the Amherst County, Virginia area. Through research, help from the Amherst County Museum and Historical Society and information from Smoots still living in the Amherst County area, I began to develop a good deal of information. This is an attempt to correlate said information and offer it to others. Please feel free to comment or offer corrections.
Per the Smoots of Maryland and Virginia by Harry Wright Newman (the Smoot book):
"Notley Smoot, Sr. son of Thomas and Elizabeth Smoot, was born sometime before 1765, perhaps in Charles County, Maryland. His youth, however, was spent in Prince William County, Virginia, where his father died in 1783. After this date Notley left the scenes of his youth and settled in Nelson County, Virginia, where he is found as the head of a family in the 1810 census."
He married Ann Stratton who was likewise born before 1765. Per the Smoot book, "the names of all children have not been established; from the census records one can infer that he had at least five sons and one daughter."

In the 1850 census there is a Thomas living with John Smoot. Therefore, because Thomas had only one son in the 1820 census, it can be reasonably assumed that the Thomas who married Clarissa is the son of Thomas Smoot.
The bondsman for the marriage of James M. Smoot to Martha Ann Sutphin was Wm. H. Smoot. Therefore, it can be reasonably assumed that this James is not a son of either John or Thomas.
It can then be reasonably assumed that James H., George W. and William Smoot are the other sons of John.
If these assumptions are correct the make up of the families of John and Thomas Smoot in 1850 would have been:

There are a number of Smoots noticeably absent in the 1860 census. My guess is that the Civil War began in 1861 which took many young men away from their homes.
