Although St. Johns County did not exist until 1821, the written history of this area goes back more than 450 years. First settled by the Spanish in 1565, Florida was transferred to British control in 1763 as part of the Treaty of Paris which ended the Seven Years War. British occupation only lasted 20 years before Florida returned to Spanish control in 1783 as a result of the American Revolution. It didn�t last long either. In 1821, Florida became a territory of the United States. It would become a state in 1845.
