VAUGHAN, J.H. - for a number of years a resident of Tampa, died yesterday at York, and his body will be brought to Tampa this evening over the Seaboard for interment. Mr. VAUGHAN was a victim of consumption and left here last Monday to visit one of the turpentine camps in the vicinity of Ocala, thinking that the change might do him some good, but death claimed him before he could reach his destination. The deceased has relatives and a number of friends in Tampa to whom the Times extends the sincerest sympathy. — Tampa Times

VERESH, Joseph – “Tampa Man Found Shot to Death in Hotel Room.” Panama City – A Tampa, Fla. Man was found shot to death in a Panama City hotel room Tuesday. Police identified him as Joseph VERESH, about 70. They said he apparently operated an organization named United Colonizers. Hotel employes [sic] said they forced their way into the room after hearing a pistol shot. They added that drafts on the United Colonizers worth an estimated half million dollars were found in the room. Justice of the Peace Wilford VARN said a .25 calibre pistol was in VERESH’s hand. Two other firearms, a German Luger and a .22 caliber rifle were found in the room. At Tampa, VERESH was reported to have operated the United Colonizers from a small trailer in a suburb of that city. Neighbors said they have little knowledge of the nature of his activities. [Source: Sarasota-Journal, 16 Apr 1952, page 17].
