1850 Gadsden Co. census shows the family of Jesse DUKES and wife Nancy WOOD. They married in Madison Co. FL in 1842. They had two sons, Francis Marion b. 1844 and William Lazarus b. 1846.. Also living with them are several children by his previous marriage to Elizabeth STRICKLAND. These children are Angelina, Mary, Nancy, Ellen, Elizabeth, and Cynthia. They only lived there for a short time and moved back to Madison Co. FL. When they lived in Gadsden Co. FL they were living next door to his daughter, Martha, and her husband Duncan J. JOHNSON. He received land there for service in the Indian War. His widow married Richard Montgomery ALLEN. William & Margaret were my Gt.Gt.Grandparents. Their son Andrew Jackson MITCHELL married Josephine Goddin ETHINGTON. Her first husband was Joseph Ethington. She was born in Holmes Co., daughter of Reddick and Ellender GODDIN. Andrew had a dau. OWENS/MITCHELL

My g-g-grandfather was James G. OWENS, b. SC 1819, m. 1841 to Lucinda Jane MITCHELL presumably in Gadsden County. All four children were born in Gadsden Co. before the family moved to Walton Co. in the mid-1850's. Their youngest child was Hugh Lafayette OWENS, my great-grandfather. His eldest brother William moved to Greene co. AL in 1869 and Hugh followd him in the 1870's. the middle brother, John Harrison OWENS, remained in Walton Co., m. 1875 and had a large family, mostly daughters. The youngest son, Walton OWENS was born ten days before his father, John Harrison died of typhoid fever in 1897, Walton OWENS Jr. is the only male descendant of this line. The only daughter of James and Lucinda OWENS, Julia Caroline remained unmarried.

If anyone has any information on James G. OWENS, when he came to Florida from SC, whether he is related to Solomon OWENS of Gadsden Co., who his parents were, etc. - and information on early MITCHELL families of Gadsden Co., Mary Mitchell in particular (1785-1863), please contact me.
