Elsie Hatcher Padgett, 90, of Middleburg, FL, passed away Sunday, June 20, 2010. She was born on September 16, 1919 in Middleburg, FL to parents, Ellis and Ethel Hatcher. Mrs. Padgett was a retired bus driver with 30 years of service from the Clay County School System. She was a member of Black Pond Baptist Church and had served as the church clerk and taught the Adult Ladies Sunday School class. Mrs. Padgett enjoyed gardening, sewing and cooking. She will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Padgett, Sr.; her parents, Ellis and Ethel Hatcher; 8 brothers and 3 sisters.

She is survived by 5 sons and 1 daughter; Archie, Jr. (Barbara), Jerry (Anita), Kenneth (Susie), Wayne (Sharron), Glenn (Vicky) and Carole Bahl; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Thursday, June 24, 2010 at Black Pond Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, June 25, 2010 at Black Pond Baptist Church with Reverend Charlie Hunt officiating. Interment will follow in Black Pond Cemetery. Lucille H. Padgett, 86, went to be with The Lord, passing away at her residence February 5, 2002. Of the Baptist faith, Mrs. Padgett was a longtime member of the Black Pond Baptist Church and was an active member of the womens Missionary Union, she dearly loved serving The Lord, spending time and sharing fellowship with her family and friends. Born November 12, 1915, in Clay County and was a lifelong resident of Middleburg, FL. After retiring from the Clay County School Board, Lucille enjoyed spending time taking care of her flowers, garden and sewing was always a pleasurable hobby of hers.

Of her many blessed days of life on this earth, she touched the lives of many and will be missed immensely by all. Her beloved husband of 30 years of marriage, Marvin precedes Lucille in death in 1965, and her son Marcus Padgett, January 21, 2002.

Survived by daughter, Margaret Trew of Middleburg, FL; brother, Ellis Hatcher of Middleburg, Fl; sisters, Kathleen Oliver and Elsie Padgett of Middleburg, FL; grandchildren, Richard Trew, Robert Daniel Padgett and Kellie Locher, 8 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.

Marcus Padgett, 64, of Middleburg, Florida, went to be with The Lord, January 21, 2002, at Tandem Health Care Center in Orange Park, Florida. Born in Starke, Florida he has been a lifetime resident of Clay County. Of the Baptist faith, Brother Marcus was a member and a Deacon of Black Pond Baptist Church.

As a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather, Brother Marcus was truly devoted to spending time with his family, friends, Church and serving The Lord. He touched the lifes of many that had the opportunity to know him, and will be missed tremendously.

Survived by his loving wife Marion Dale Padgett, mother; Lucille Padgett, son; Robert D. Padgett of Middleburg, FL, daughter; Kelly Locher of Middleburg, FL, sister; Margaret P. Trew of Middleburg, FL, including 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Marvin Padgett of Middleburg was found dead last Friday in a wooded area where he was working in pulpwood.

Mr. Padgett was born in Clay County and had lived here all his life. He was a member of the Black Pond Baptist Church where funeral services were held under the direction of Key-McCabe Funeral Home.

The clergyman officiating was C. W. Carter. Interment was in the Black Pond Cemetery.

Surviving is his widow, Mrs. Lucille Padgett; one daughter, Margaret Trew; one son, Marcus Padgett all of Middleburg; three sisters, Colea Chesser of Middleburg, Tinnie Padgett of Clay Hill and Totsie Mosley of Middleburg; two brothers, Earl and Irving Padgett of Middleburg and three grandchildren. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family.

Funeral services for Marvin L. Padgett, 62, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Black Pond Baptist Church of Middleburg with Rev. C. W. Carter, pastor and Rev. James F. Conway officiating. Burial will be in Black Pond Cemetery under the direction of Key-McCabe Northside Funeral Home, 4747 Main Street.

Mr. Padgett, who lived at P.O. Box 93, Middleburg, died Wednesday morning following a brief illness. He was born in Clay County and had lived there all his life. He was a member of the Black Pond Baptist Church and a member of the Board of Deacons.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Lucille Padgett; a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Trew; a son, Marcus Padgett all of Middleburg; four sisters, Mrs. Tiny Padgett of Maxville, and Mrs. Gussie Padgett, Mrs. Totsy Mosley and Mrs. Colea Chesser all of Middleburg; two brothers, Irving Padgett Sr. and Earl Padgett both of Middleburg; and three grandchildren, Richard Trew, Dannie and Kellie Padgett all of Middleburg.

Active pallbearers will be deacons O. Jennings Murhee Jr., Kelvin Oliver, Harvey Starling, Henry Burroughs, Leon Baxley. Honorary pallbearers will be O. Jennings Murhee Sr., John Anderson, Irving Padgett Jr., Harold Hatcher, Rudolph L. Padgett, Albert Murray, James L. Gooding and members of the Adult Men's Sunday School Class of the Church.

Mr. Mason Davie Padgett age 64, of Middleburg passed away Sunday, September 18, 2011 at Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Padgett was born on October 31, 1946 in Middleburg to the late Virgil and Maggie Williamson Padgett and was a lifelong resident. Mason was a self-employed mechanic/welder.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years Betty Evelyn Padgett.

Survivors are: daughters: Shirley Padgett Portch (John) of Middleburg; Sandy Padgett of Tampa; sons: David Padgett and Dwayne Padgett both of Middleburg; sister: Laura Pittman also of Middleburg; twelve grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends in the Black Pond Baptist Church, 3644 Old Jennings Road in Middleburg on Saturday, September 24, 2011 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM with funeral services beginning at 11 o'clock. Interment will follow services in Black Pond Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Charlie Hunt officiating. Arrangements are by Helm Gallagher Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Nadine Padgett, 69, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 4, 2011 surrounded by her loving family. A lifelong resident of Middleburg, FL. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and nana.

She is survived by her husband, JC of 53 years; son, Steve (Lisa) Padgett; daughter, Carolyn (Dickey) Davis; five grandkids: Alishia (David), Jesse (Brittany), Melissa (Matt); Nickey (Austin) and D.J; two great grandkids: Wyatt and Ryland and one on the way. She was one of seven sisters and one brother.

Ruby Lois Padgett, 69, of Middleburg, FL passed away October 1, 2013. She was born in Little Rock, AR on July 13, 1944 to parents J.W. and Gladys (Stewart) Porter and had lived in Clay County since 1958 coming from Missouri. Mrs. Padgett had retired from the Clay County School Board as a bus driver with over 32 years of service and was a member of the Eagles Club.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Milton V. Padgett; her daughters, Frances and Vickie and a sister, Margaret.

She is survived by her son, James (Lorraine) Padgett; daughter, Denise (Mike) Pettit; brothers, Mack (Nancy) Pratt, Paul (Sandy) Pratt and Robert Pratt; sisters, Peggy, Ann, Lynn, Sharon and Jessica; grandchildren, Christopher, Cody, Torie, Vinessa, Alexis, Noah and Austin; great-grandchildren, Zack, Ethan, Brook, Layn and Addie.

She is survived by her mother, Ruby Padgett; brother, James Padgett; and sister, Denise Pettit; and many nieces and nephews. Marjorie - Deloris "Patsy" Parker, 62, loving wife of Johnny E. Parker, passed away April 17, 2007 at her Middleburg home. She was born January 31, 1945 in Jacksonville, FL, the daughter of James Curtis Osborne and Maxie Jarriel Osborne. She enjoyed raising her family, doing crafts, and her membership at Black Pond Baptist Church.

She was predeceased by her son Richard D. Parker in 2006. Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Johnny E. Parker; her daughter Kimberly Renee Ackerson; her son John Curtis Parker and his fiance Amy; her grandchildren Keith Michael Carson, Kevin James Ackerson, Tony "TJ" Edward Barfield, and Amber Parker; also her sisters Eleene Daymon and Debbie Loos, and brothers Ellis, Cecil, and Jimmy Osborne; many other loving family members and friends.

Laura Pence, 72, of Middleburg, FL, passed away Thursday, August 20, 2009. She was born on October 26, 1936 in Kentucky to parents, William and Margaret Fuller. Mrs. Pence had been a title clerk bookkeeper and was a member of Black Pond Baptist Church in Middleburg, FL. She was an avid reader and will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her husband of 22 years, Ray McDaniel; daughter, Laura Eads (Greg); a sister and two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Bryan Eads.

Joseph Slate, age 63, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 18, 2012. He was born in Holden, West Virginia and has lived in Middleburg since 1960. He was employed by Benjamin Moore Paint Company for 35 years as a Chemical Engineer and Quality Control.

Survivors include his loving wife of 27 years, Wanda Sue Slate. Two Sons: Chris (Percie) Slate, David (Carli) Tyler, Daughter: Missy (Mike) Reeves. Three brothers: Art (Ginny), Harold (Judy), Bill (Lois), Two Sisters: Norene and Ethel Mae (Gene), Many Nieces and Nephews, Seven Grandchildren: Mark, Megan, Steve, Carly, Cole, Marshall and Ayden.

Joe was an avid Golfer, who enjoyed spending time with the family especially his grandkids as he was affectionately known as Papa Joe. Joe always took every opportunity to tell others about Jesus and be a witness for the Lord. Mr. Slate was a member of Black Pond Baptist Church for 22 years. He will be deeply missed and will live in our hearts forever.

John "Sammy" Snow, 79, of Middleburg, FL, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2008. He was born on October 10, 1928 in Morven, GA to parents, Quinnie and Estelle Snow.

Mr. Snow worked for Florida Rock for over 28 years and enjoyed gardening in his spare time. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the United States Army and was a member of Black Pond Baptist Church and will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends.

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Mable Snow; daughter, Judy VanFossen (Max) of Green Cove Springs, FL; sisters, Polly Dumas (Wilbur) of Savannah, GA and Flora Eubanks of Quitman, GA; grandson, Travis VanFossen and great-grandson, Matthew VanFossen.

Catherine was buried in Peoria Cemetery at the time of her death. Her remains and tombstone were moved to Black Pond Baptist Church Cemetery, she now lays at rest beside her parents Harvey and Evelyn Starling.

STARLING Evelyn V., age 78 of Middleburg passed away on December 3, 2002 at the Life Care Center in Orange Park. She was born on June 4, 1924 to James and Lovey Keene in Orange Park, FL. Evelyn was a homemaker but had worked in food preparation for Orange Park High School. Her hobbies included cooking, sewing, quilting, church and her family was her life. She will be remembered for her many handmade quilts that she made and gave away to others. Her testimony and knowledge of the Bible showed that she was a true Christian. She was a member of Black Pond Baptist Church in Middleburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents James David and Lovey (Fountain) Keene; her husband of fifty years, William Harvey Starling; one daughter, Catherine Virginia Starling; one sister, Mary (Keene) Luke. She is survived by one sister, Letha Burroughs; four children; William David Starling, Anita Padgett (Jerry), Sally Guy (Jerry) and Kay Williamson (Kenny); Daughter in law, Joann Starling; ten grandchildren; Penny Mullins (Jeff), Junior Starling, (Mossie), Debra Duncan (Mark), J. Judy Diane Snow VanFossen, 59 of Green Cove Springs, FL died Monday, June 3, 2013 at her residence. Mrs. Vanfossen was a lifelong resident of Clay County and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Green Cove Springs. She was a veteran of the US Army stationed in Key West, a dispatcher for Florida Rock and worked as a phlebotomist for Memorial Hospital and Middleburg Family Medical before retiring as a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband of 29 years, Max VanFossen, sons Travis (Collen) VanFossen, Michael (Debra) VanFossen, daughters, Stephanie (Russell) Striplin, Barbara (Chris) White, nine grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Mrs. Joyce Waters Williams, 87, of Middleburg, Fla., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 22, 2009. She was born October 26, 1921, in Glenville, Ga., to Erastus and Ada Waters. She was a member of Black Pond Baptist Church and will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walter Lee Williams, Sr. and daughter, Brenda Joy Brown. Survivors include her children, Kent Williams (Debbie) of Middleburg; and Gay Kennedy (Hiram) of Middleburg; and Statesboro, Ga.; son-in-law, Lenny Brown; seven grandchildren, Elisha "Caleb" Williams; Raymond "Joe" Tatum, Jr.; Jerry Lee Tatum; Mary Jo Todd; Len Brown, Jr.; Brenda Walters and Tammy Gee; eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mr. Walter Lee Williams, Sr., 94, of Middleburg, FL went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 1, 2006. He was born on September 17, 1912 in Whitehouse, FL to Sylvester and Nancy Williams.

Mr. Williams served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps and was a cattleman all of his life. He was one of seven generations of the Williams family in Southwest Duval County and Northwest Clay County. He spent many years in the timber business as well as being a real estate investor. Mr. Williams served on the Clay County Soil & Water Board and was a lifetime member of the Masons.

Mr. Williams was of the Baptist faith and attended Black Pond Baptist Church. Mr. Williams was preceded in death by two children, Jerry Morgan Williams and Brenda Joy Brown.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Williams; children, Walter Lee Williams, Jr. (Sherry) of Jacksonville, FL, Kent Williams (Debbie) of Middleburg, FL, Hilda Jean Powers (Jerry) of Jacksonville, FL and Pernecia Gay Kennedy (Hiram) of Statesboro, GA; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Jewel Williamson, 70, of Middleburg, FL, passed away Sunday, March 28, 2004 in Jacksonville, FL. Of the Baptist faith Mrs. Williamson was a member of Black Pond Baptist Church and a lifelong resident of Clay County. Jewel enjoyed sharing fellowship at her church, listening to gospel music, camping and spending time with her family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, March 29, 2001, H. C. Mrs. Betty M. Wilson, 83, of Orange Park, FL, passed away Friday, June 6, 2008. She was born on December 12, 1924 in Palatka, FL to parents, Lonnie and Elsie Mullis and had been a longtime resident of Palatka and Middleburg.

Mrs. Wilson had worked as a librarian assistant and was a member of Black Pond Baptist Church in Middleburg. She enjoyed tole painting and cake decorating and will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lonnie and Elsie Mullis; her loving husband, Herbert E. "Red" Wilson; a brother, David Mullis and sisters, Ella Juanita Mullis and Margie Collier. She was the loving mother of Pat Burris of Orange Park, Herb (Mary) Wilson of Palatka and Jimmy (Kimberly) Wilson of Middleburg as well as being survived by sisters, Jeannine Foster and Alicia (Frank) Bush; brother, Joe (Jane) Mullis; grandchildren, Laurie (Charlie) Creech, Lyndie (Wynn) Peery, Reggie (Krystal) Wilson and J.D. Herbert E. Wilson, 73, of Lake Delancey, died Thursday January 15, 2004. The Asheville, N.C. native lived in Lake Delancey since 1978, coming from Middleburg. He was a member of the Peniel Baptist Church a U. S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, retired after 28 years as an aircraft electrician working civil service with NAS in Jacksonville. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #107 F & AM in Middleburg and the Morocco Temple Shrine.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Wilson of Lake Delancey; daughter, Pat Burris of Orange Park; 2 sons, Herbie Wilson of Palatka and Jimmy Wilson of Middleburg; 4 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday January 18th at the Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka. Memorial donations can be made to Rodeheaver Boys Ranch, 380 Boys Ranch Road, Palatka, Florida, 32177. Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home and Crematory in Palatka is in charge of arrangements.
