Sauk Discussion List Letter Received - Help for your Search

I just came back from Sauk County, Wisconsin -- doing research. I wanted the List to know a few things.

First, the staff at the Probate and Register of Deeds Office were extremely helpful, courteous and friendly. They gave me a mini-tour, explained where everything was and gladly answered any questions I posed.

Marriage records (on hand) go back to 1862. However, it was not mandatory that marriages be recorded -- and they only were if the Bride and Groom had them recorded at the County Level. The staff will make a copy of the original record for you (while you are there) for a fee of $7.00. Land records -- amazing -- go back to the 1840's -- You can request a copy of the actual document on file and the staff will make a copy for you. The charge is $1.00 per page. Old Probate records -- the indexes are held at the Court House -- but the old records themselves are housed at the Sauk County Historical Society in Baraboo -- you can go there to get copies of the actual documents. The Baraboo Library has county census records and newspapers on microfiche going back to the 1860's. They have a section of their Library devoted to County Historical records, including Histories and cemetery records. The Reedsburg Public Library in Sauk County also has County and Town Histories, County census records (dating back to 1850) microfiche of the newspaper starting at 1850 and going up through the present, and they also have the State Census records. Plus, they have their County and Town Histories.

If you do on site research in Sauk County -- the materials are there! And the Court House staff and the Library staff were wonderful to work with! Regards, Colleen Hager City, WI
