The Ziemers of Oconto County
The Ziemers earliest records that I got originated from 1633 & possible earlier. Prior to 1633, the records are in Latin. The Ziemers were born in a little town called Glansee, District of Greifenberg, state of Pommern in Germany.
Glansee had a castle in the center of town and all the
serfs had land surrounding it which they farmed. The land was in a pie shaped
section. A certain percentage of their produce went to nobility of the castle in
exchange for protection from raids of roving tribes/bands from other districts.
The nobility was replaced by a convent. The serfs were
given land rights and a crest from the nobility if they continued to provide the
convent with food as it was told to me by interpreters.
Contrary to popular belief, Ferdinand Frederick Ziemer (born 1846) arrived in the USA first before his brother, Frederick (Ferdinand) August Ziemer. (born 1855) I have noted his name as both Frederick Ferdinand & Frederick August.
Ferdinand was married in Germany - I'm guessing around or in Glansee, Pommeria where he was born. He had 2 daughters. All his family were killed in a carriage accident, he suffering a broken hip. Because of the tragic circumstances, he left for America, arriving here in 1872 in New York and made his way to Wisconsin.
Ferdinand was naturalized on September 24, 1906 in Oconto County. Certificate # 5520 Vol. 4.
As relatives did in that era - he soon sent for his
brother Frederick & Frederick's wife at the time Rosa Fehlow (Vehlow) and their
son Franz. Frederick and family arrived here in November of 1883 in New York
City on the ship Rhailia. He became a citizen (naturalized) on the same date as
his brother, Ferdinand, September 24, 1906. Certificate # 5580 Vol. 5
According to verbal reports, they lived in Appleton for
approximately for a year before settling in Oconto County. The occupation of the
brothers were lumberjacks and in later years, farmers.
When Holt Lumber Company offered land for sale, Fred bought some for the price of $400.00 on July 5th, 1888. Vol. 42 page 453. Oconto County Courthouse Records.
Again, tragedy struck when Frederick lost his wife,
Rosa to "consumption" (TB) in 1889 and again in June of 1892 when he lost his
son Franz to diphtheria. He & Rosa had 2 other sons, Albert & Wilhelm.
Fred had married again in January of 1892 to Amelia
Bertha Kittler, daughter of Gottleib & Augusta (Prochnow) Kittler.
Fred & Amelia lost a son Walter in December of 1892 who
lived a short 8 days.
Through the years,
they had 6 children (1 son, Emil and 5 daughters, Frieda, Metha, Greta, Anna &
Mildred) from their union and 2 sons from Rosa, Wilhelm & Albert.
According to my mother, both Amelia and her cousin,
Mathildia (Tiegs) Hassenfeldt were the mid wives for the country "folk "Susie,"
the Potowatimi Indian who occasionally lived on the Ziemer land taught Amelia &
Mathildia the Indian herb art.
My mother
recalled when she was a toddler, she stepped on some broken glass in a mud
puddle & severely cut her toes. "Susie" made a milk poultice consisting of milk
& bread and wrapped her toes in it with a plantain weed around them. They
healed, scarred as they were, perfectly. I still have the moccasins that "Susie"
made for my mother.
Again, according to my mother, the Tiegs, Hassenfeldts and Ziemers were a pretty close knit group. In early records from Germany, the Tiegs married into the Ziemers. Johann Hassenfeldt owned the farm next to Fred Ziemer in the early history of Oconto County. IN baptismal records, one saw that a Tiegs or Hassenfeldt was a sponsor for a Ziemer.
Ferdinand Tiegs & Johann Hassenfeldt were instrumental in starting what is now the First American Lutheran Church in Oconto. Fred Ziemer was in charge of getting the baptismal water each Easter Morning for the church. He would have to go the a stream of running water, in which the water was cascading over the stones, take an earthen pot and catch the cool, clear running water. This pot had a tight seal and supposedly this water would stay fresh for a year. This was told to me by my mother Mildred.
For entertainment in the winter, it was ice skating on the Rabe Pond, which is now owned by another cousin, Harvey Elhnan. Card playing was also another pastime as well as dancing at Cream City. The time that the dance hall was idle was in Lent. No one danced. Skiing was also a past time. The barrel hoops from the rain barrel were used as skis.
Christmas was another story. A water bucket was always set next the Christmas tree and the candles were not lit often except for Christmas Eve. Fred would always go to the barn to give the animals an extra treat at midnight Amelia would be knitting a lot during the course of the year. My mother never got the "hang" of knitting but I love it. If I have a simple pattern, I could take a nap & keep on knitting. Mother would tell me, she could see "Grandma Ziemer" in me, doing the Same thing. Each child would get an orange & mittens, maybe a scarf. My mother's brother, Emil, gave her a doll filled with sawdust when she was 5. I still have the doll.
Some of mother's favorite stories involved the horses. All the children went to Elm Grove School and usually one of the older sons had to go and pick them up with the team of horses. If the snow was heavy or unusually cold, the horses would really run to get back to the warm barn. Sometimes the sleigh would tip and everyone would end up in the snow. The horses really liked Emil, her brother, and would take his hat off his head when he would go to the barn.
Fred Ziemer was I of the first to get a radio in the
county. Everyone would gather around to listen in the evening, including the
neighbors, the Degeneffes. My memory is hazy on this, but I do believe that
mother also stated that Fred was also 1 to get the first car and I think she
said it cost 800.00. It was a model with a roof with the fringe on top; open on
the sides. She also stated how afraid the horses were of it.
Going into town was a major trip of all day before the car
was obtained. When a trip had to be made, it was done before winter, if at all
possible.
Emil inherited the farm, as was
custom in those days. It was auctioned off in October of 1967 after Emil's death
in July of 1967.
Wilhelm Ziemer had 1
daughter, Albert had 3 daughters, Frieda had 11 children, Metha had 6 children,
Greta had 6 children, Emil had 9 children, Anna did not have children and
Mildred had 1; Joan Marie Hassenfeldt-Hepp-historian of the families.
