I am related to the Windross family, my grandfather on my mother's side was Percy Windross and my great (x6) grandfather was William Windross who had 3 sons, William, David and George (the latter being my great (x5) grandfather). His brother David was the father Of John Windross who moved and settled in Oconto County in the early 1800's. George remained here in the UK together with William and there is a long line that follows. The Windross names lives on here in the UK, most of them are still in Yorkshire where John originated.

I have tried to gather as much detail from your website as possible but there are some blanks and discrepancies that I would like to clear up. I can also provide a lot more detail regarding John's history if there is anyone who may be interested.  It would also be great to find out if any of the Windross line is still alive and to try and get in touch with them if possible.   Stephen Peattie
 
 

I. John WINDROSS was born in England. John died 1858 in Oconto County, Wisconsin.

He married Jemima SKETTON in England.

John immigrated from England to New York state, later the family traveled to Brown County, Wisconsin Territory were they settled in Fort Howard. There next stop was Oak Orchard.   Some researchers indicate they came from Cold Kirby, Yorkshire, England.

John settled in the Oak Orchard area of Oconto county in circa 1847. He established an inn, a farm and engaged in fishing. Considered among the first settlers of the area. In 1840 U.S. census he is shown living at Fort Howard. He is listed in 1850 Brown County US census as a wilderness dweller. The closet source of supplies was to go to Green Bay.

John built a log cabin, on what eventually became the 220 acre Windross farm of which 70 he cleared for agriculture and gardening. From the 1852 Oconto assessment roll!! for 1852, this land appears to have been deed in the name of his son Charles.

Local stories have that there was a large oak tree close to the bay on his property which was referred to as a "Treaty Tree". This was where negotiations were conducted with the Indians.

                                     William is listed on the 1870 U.S. census as age, 42, born England, fisherman with $2000 in real property and $1000 of personal property. He has living with him 3 men who work for him.

                                      By the time of the 1900 census William is enumerated on the census at age 74 boarding with the the John and Emma Watty family occupation capitalist. He states he was born Feb. 1826 and immigrated from England in 1833, which is contrary to the biography which follows.

William Windross William Windross of Pensaukee was born in the state of New York, seventy years ago last month, and eleven days after the arrival of his parents from England. When eighteen years of age he accompanied the family to Oconto County and settled near what is now known as Oak Orchard. Farming and fishing were their avocations, but when the war broke out, William entered the permanent guard, with other strapping six-footer, and for fourteen months served his country in escorting renegade soldiers to points to which they were assigned. There were three sons and one daughter - Charles is 79 years of age, and daughter -now Mrs. Levi! Hale of Peshtigo - is 77, and John 75. After their fathers death the farm was divided and in their advanced years the "boys" continue to till the soil, seemingly unmindful that the touch of time had silvered their locks; furrowed their features and robbed their step partially of it's old-time elasticity. William is a walking encyclopedia- thoroughly conversant with both ancient and modern historical events and gifted with a style of expression decidedly entertaining. He resides with his brother Charles and wife, and has never married. "When 1 was in the mood for marring," he said, " there were no girls, near by, to wed."

    2. Charles WINDROSS (John) was born Cold Kirby, Yorkshire, England Nov 2, 1817. Charles died May 1, 1898 in Oak Orchard, Oconto Co., WI, at 80 years of age. Dates from gs at Brookside cemetery.

    He married Mary Ann BARLAMENT in Wisconsin. Mary was born Long Island, New York 18 October 1837. Mary was the daughter of Michael J. BARLAMENT and Mary Magdelena SOLAR. Mary died May 13, 1910 in Oak Orchard, Wisconsin, at 72 years of age. Dates from gs at Brookside Cemetery.

    Charles is listed as a resident land owner in the first assessment rolls for Oconto county in 1852. On the 1860 census he is enumerated as Charles Winters, age 42, born England, occupation fisherman & forming. Mary is age 22, born New York. The children living with the are Mary age 9; Emma, age 5 and Charles age 2. They also have Ann Mernan age I8 born Canada, occupation servant with them. On the 1870 census Charles is age 32, occupation fisherman; Mary age 33, Emaline age 15; Charles age 12; Laurie, age 8, George age 6, and William age 4. He is shown born England, his wife Long Island and the children WI. His occupation is fisherman, with $2000 real property and $1500 personal. He has his in-laws Michael and Lena Barlament living with him as well as a Mary Cordes, age 18.

    He is shown on 1880 census as occupation fisherman, age 42; wife Mary age 42; children Emaline age 24, teaching school; Charles age 22, fishing; George, age 16; William age 14; and Mary C., age 7. The last 3 children listed as attending school.

    Charles WINDROSS and Mary Ann BARLAMENT had the following children:

One of the happiest events of the season occurred last Sunday evening, being the marriage of Miss Emma Windross, a handsome daughter of Mr. Chas. Windross, of Oak Orchard, to Mr. Andrew Morrissey, telegraph operator at Oconto. 'The pleasing ceremony was performed at St. Joseph's church. Oconto, shortly after seven o'clock, in the presence of several friends of the contracting parties. Rev. Father Sweibach officiating. Miss Hannah Windross acted as bridesmaid and Mr. John Roddy as groomsman.
Congratulations followed   immediately after the impressing ceremony, and then the bridal party proceeded to the depot, where the happy pair took the train for Chicago, in which city they will stop some time, while on their wedding tour. The bride is one of the most highly esteemed, graceful and charming young ladies of this locality, and she has long been noted for her benevolence as well as her lovely looks. The groom is a young man of energy and perseverance, and he is held in high estimation by everyone who knows him. May the ship that carries them on through the voyage of life always be decked with happiness and prosperity. Living in Chicago in 1927.

                                She married Edward O'DONAL in Oconto, WI., 04/01/1882. She married (?) PERKINS.

           10      v.   William WINDROSS was born Pensaukee, Oconto County, WI. 05/03/1866. William died 24 Jan.1940 in Wisconsin, at 73 years of age. Buried Brookside cemetery. He married Alberta "Bertie" CHASE in Oconto County, Wisconsin, 5 Sept. 1892. Oconto pre 1907 marriage index.

                                  Alberta was born in Wisconsin 1876. Alberta was the daughter of Nehemish "Nemi" Sawtel! CHASE and Malina FRAKER.

Mrs. Hannah Hale, Peshtigo's oldest resident died shortly after the midnight hour Friday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. E. LeBlond. Mrs. Hale only recently celebrated her 92nd birthday and despite her venerable years was in fall possession of her mental faculties up to the hour of her death which came form general debility attendant upon her extreme age. She lived at the LeBlond home for the past 25 years.
Mrs. Hale, whose maiden name was Hannah Windroff (Windross), was born in Hamilton, England, coming to the United States with her family when she was 14 years old. Her marriage to Levi Hale, who was prominent in the early days of this county, occurred in 1855. The death of Mr. Hale occurred 16 years ago, when he had reached the age of 75. The surviving children are two daughters, Mrs. LeBlond of this city, and Mrs. James L. Murphy of Marinette.
The deceased was a member of the Scientist faith and the funeral services were conducted under the rites of that church at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the LeBlond residence. Mr. L. H. Hitchcock and Mrs. Harry Emerson were the readers and there were sacred selections by the choir composed of Mrs. Wm. Watson, Mrs. James Watson, Mr. and Mrs.   John and Geo. Gordon, Messrs. Jas. F. Slight, J. S. Thompson, Arthur Scott, M. H Bice, Geo. Albrecht and J Quirt acted as pall bearers and the remains were laid at rest in the family lot in the Oconto avenue cemetery.
Relatives and friends of the bereaved family from Marinette and Menominee, as well as many from this city, were present at the obsequies.

    She married Levi HALE in Wisconsin, 1855. Levi was born in Europe 1821. Levi was the son of Juils "Jinks" S. HALE and Catherine HARRIES.     On Saturday Dec. 21 st, Levi Hale age 74 years, of old age. Mr. Hale was one of Peshtigo's oldest residents coming here with the first settlers. He leaves beside an aged wife, two daughters to mourn his demise. Mrs. Leblond, of this place and Mrs. Jas. L. Murphy, of Marinette. The funeral took place on Monday from the residence, Rev. Fr. Sheier officiating.

    Levi is shown on the 1860 census as being at Peshtigo, on sheet 282. On the 1870 census, Levi is age 50, occupation laborer, real property valued at $12,000 and personal at 1,500. Hannah is age 50, born England, keeping house their daughters Martha age 13, and Katerine age 11. The have one domestic servant living with them, and on 1880 census with Hannah and Kattie.

    Levi and Hannah were in Peshtigo by 1856, when Levi sold to Charles Lamp Wl/2 of NWl/2 of Sec 28. This was near Bundy*s Creek west of Mays corners. Levi sold him adjoining land in 1859. This was in Lower Sugarbush area, where Chas. & 5 children parished on Oct. 8, 1871.

    Levi and Hannah were living on Oconto Avenue next to Father Peter Pernin's Catholic church in Sept. 1871 when Luther B. Noyes, publisher & editor of Marinette & Peshtigo Eagle wrote about the following incident in the paper. For several weeks they had as a residence on their property a deer which appeared to have settled in. It seemed to have no fear of people, and the dogs seemed to be content to leave it alone. The deer, or another one, was observed leaving the property in the direction of the river on the night of Oct. 8, 1871. The conclusion of Mr. Noyes was the deer had taken to the yard, to avoid the fires that existed in the woods.

    That Hannah and Levi & their children survived the fire is remarkable, but they also sustained the lost of their home and personal possessions. It is well documented that the church and the priest home were destroyed, as well as all buildings in the immediate area. There daughter Katherine obits states she was a survivor of the fire.

WINDROSS being upon the bay shore, cared for a large share of the travel and the remembrance of the old house, the motherly care of Mrs. Windross and Hannah (now Mrs. Levi Hale) is cherished by many."

    Hannah " Anne" WINDROSS and Levi HALE had the following children:

Unquestionably grief over her first born son, who died a year ago, April 23, was the primary cause of the death, this morning at 3:10, of Mrs. James L Murphy, born Hale, at her home, 408 Jefferson street. She had failed steadily since the sudden death of her son, "Ted" Murphy well known drayman of the city, and at the time predicted that she would not survive more than a year.

Martha E. Hale was born in Peshtigo, January 21, sixty-seven years ago, a daughter of Lcvi Hale. She was married to James L. Murphy in this city July 4, forty-five years ago, residing in this city the major portion of the time

Mrs. Murphy is survived by her husband and one son, Robert Murphy agent for the Ann Arbor Carferries at this port, and a sister, Mrs. E. B. LeBlond of this city.

The body was removed to the J. R. McLain Funeral Home and on Wednesday will be taken back to the family residence. The funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Mrs. Murphy was widely known throughout the county, having been in semi-public life for years when Mr. Murphy was sheriff of the county. Generous hearted and genial she had a host of friends.

Final rites for Mrs. James L Murphy, born 1 Hale, who died on Tuesday of heart trouble and complications, were conduct at the family residence Jefferson street, Thursday afternoon under the auspices of Christian Scientists, Mrs. Alex Lindsay being the reader.

W. H. Ounsworth of Menominee, accompanied by Mrs. George L. Hastings, also of Menominee sang "Leave it With Him' and "No Night There". There was a great outpouring of friends of the decedent, the spacious rooms of the house being crowded and many were unable to gain admittance.

The room wherein the casket rested was banked with exquisitely beautiful flowers, expressive of the sympathy of friends from near and far. They were in charge of Mrs. James McCarthy, Mrs. O. A. Christianson, Mrs. Henry Alexander and Mrs. Charles Albright. The casket was borne to and from the funeral car by Charles J. Lauerman, J.K. Setright, Peter Rock, D. J. Madagin, P. C. Donnelly and Alex P. Lindsay. Sepulture was made in Forest Home cemetery at the side of her first born son "Ted" Murphy, who died a year ago. Collapsing at the grave the day her son was buried, Mrs Murphy then said it would not be more than a year when she would follow.

Among the people from away present at the absequics were Robert Murphy, grandson of Great Lakes, 111.; Ed Mclntere, Duluth; Nelson Cray, Mankato; S. J. Diatager and Harry Ringstrom, both of Minneapolis, all officials of the Soo road, with which Mr. Murphy is affiliated as claim agent; and E. P. McCahey, general agent of the Ann Arbor of Green Bay, Robert Murphy, son of the cedent, being the agent for the Ann Arbor at this combined port of Marinette and Menominee.
As a glorious spring day was waning and the body of the wife, mother and friend, was reverently consigned to its final resting place.

Mrs. Murphy was widely known and highly esteemed. A woman of noble traits she had many friends. She was devoted to her home, never being absent more than a few hours at a time liver since Mr. Murphy has been connected with the Soo railroad, Mrs. Murphy, had an annual pass and never made use of it once, thereby establish a precedent that undoubtedly has never been known. Her charity knew no limitations and many an unfortunate one was made happy by her great kindness of heart. Declining steadily since the death of her son, heart trouble of long standing, induced other complications and for several weeks Mrs. Murphy was confined to her home. Conscious to the last and ever solicitous about others she calmly gave directions for the conduct of affairs when she would no longer be in the midst of those she loved the best. In the early hours of Tuesday morning, as a new day was being ushered in, with her best loved ones near, her soul took flight.

A long cortege proceeded to Forest Home cemetery at the close of the services at the house and the newly formed mound was banked high with beautiful flowers.
The body was taken back to the family residence from the Mclain Funeral Home on Wednesday. She married James L. MURPHY in Marinette, Wisconsin, 4 July 1878.

James was born Neccena, New York 7 Nov. 1850. James was the son of John MURPHY and Johanna QUINN. James died 22 Feb. 1936 in Marinette County, WI., at 85 years of age. Marinette VR, Book 18, pg. 499. Obit appeared in the

He is survived by one son, Robert F. Murphy of this city, agent for the Ann Arbor railway;  two grand children, Mrs. Ed. Boatman, Fred street, this city and Robert Wm. Murphy of California, and four great grandchildren. The remains were removed to the McLain Funeral Home and Sunday afternoon at four were taken back to the family home-Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning from Our Lady of Lourdes church at 9 o'clock the cortege leaving the residence at 8:30 a.m.

The body will be place in the mausoleum at Forest Home cemetery.

Mr. Murphy had been prominent in public affairs here for a number of years, having served as sheriff three times, as undersheriff one tern and one term as assemblyman.

After retiring from official life he was employed as a detective for the Soo railroad and made a great record in that position. It's is no exaggeration to say that during the active life he was about the best known citizen of Marinette county. His popularity was evidenced by his frequent election to office and the legion of friends that esteemed him as a man and public official.

    A follow-up article appeared in the same paper on Feb. 25, 1936.

Flags on public building here were at half mast in memory of the deceased, who had been active civically here, being county sheriff and assemblyman.

The casket was borne to and from the funeral car by Charles J. Lauerman, Mayor Richard R, Murray, P. C. Donelly, Fred Klaus, William LaFond and Roy Keene, Menominee.

Bob Taylor was in charge of the flowers.

The body was placed in the mausoleum at Forest Home cemetery.

            13     ii. Katherine "Kattie" HALE was born in Peshtigo, Marinette Co., WI. 3 May 1858. Katherine died 15 Dec. 1938 in Peshtigo, Wisconsin, at 80 years of age. Marinette VR, Book 20, pg. 743. Obit appeared in the

Mrs. Katherine LeBlond survivor of the Peshtigo fire and a resident of this city for 21 years, died today at 12:30 p.m. in the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. G. Fowler at Peshtigo with whom she had resided for the past two months.

She was born in Peshtigo and came to this city 21 years ago. While here she lived with another daughter, Mrs. Willis Hodgins, 2118 Ella court. Survivors are four children,   Mrs. Fowler and Edward LeBlond of Peshtigo, Mrs. Cecil Engels of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Mrs. Hodgins of this city and three grandchildren.
The remains were taken to Hansen and Onion funeral home of this city.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete. She married Leander Edward LABLOND in Peshtigo, Marinette Co., WI., 4 July 1893.

                        Leander was born in Canada 10 Jan. 1850. Leander was the son of ? LEBLOND and Francis (?) LEBLONDE. Leander died 28 Sept. 1928 in Marinette, Wisconsin, at 78 years of age. Marinette VR, Book 15, pg. 6022?. Obit appeared in the

Leander Edward LeBlond, 79, died Friday afternoon at 4:30 at his home 2118 Ella Court. He had been in failing health or years, but was confined to bed only a week, due to age infirmities. He was born in Canada, his parents having been natives of France.

For half a century Mr. LeBlond resided in Peshtigo. He held a position in the store of the Peshtigo Lumber Co. for many years and was a survivor of the historic Peshtigo fire of 1871.

The survivors are the widow and children Mrs. Willis Hodgins, City; Mrs. A. G. Fowler, Peshtigo and Mrs Harry Engels, Dodge City, Iowa and a son Edward LeBlond Jr., Peshtigo; brothers Frank LeBlond, California and Napoleon LeBlond of Minneapolis and a sister, Mrs. Elmer Baker of Red Wing, Minn.

The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 from the home. Mrs. Henry Marin of Menominee, reader of the Christian Science church, to conduct the services.

Burial will be made in Peshtigo cemetery.

    4. John WINDROSS (John) was born Yorkshire, England 04/21/1821. John died June 17, 1903 Pensaukee, Wisconsin, at 82 years of age. Oconto VR, Vol. 4, pg. pg. 227. Obit appeared in the

Friday 19 June 1903;

John Windross, a prosperous farmer of Pensaukee, living at Oak Orchard, died at his home Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Windross was born in Yorkshire, May 21, 1821. In 1833 with his parents, Mr. Windross came to this county settling first in Oneida county, New York, in 1837 he came to Wisconsin locating first in Brown county and subsequently in Oconto county where he has since lived. He was one of the oldest settlers of the county and perhaps as widely known as any of the earlier settlers. Mr. Windross was married in 1855 to Miss Ann Redmond. Mr. Windross leaves a wife and four children, Mr. Judith Bell, Mrs. Hannah Snyder, Mrs. Sarah Anderson, and Mrs. John Grosse.

Mr. Windross assisted in organizing the town of Pensaukee, has served on the county board and as justice of the peace. The funeral will be held Saturday morning from St. Joseph's church."

    He married Ann "Annie" REDMOND in Green Bay, WI., 12/26/1855. Ann was born Wexford, Bellatracy Co, Ireland 06/09/1830. Ann was the daughter of Patrick REDMOND. Ann died March 18, 1908 hi Oconto County, Wisconsin, at 77 years of age. Oconto VR, Vol. 5, pg. 313.

    John is enumerated on the 1860 census, surname spelled Winters as is his brothers Charles living next to him. John is age 38, born England, occupation farming and fishing, Anne is age 22, born Ireland. Their children are David age 3, Judith age 2 and Mary age 1. Living with them is Peter Laralevis, age 52, ships carpenter, born Canada.

    John is shown on the 1870 census as age 44, born England, occupation farmer; his wife Annie is age 42, torn Ireland. His assets are S3,000 real property and $1,000 personal. Children living with them are Judith age 12, Mary age 10, Hannah age 7, Sarah age 6, John age 4, and Catherine age 2,

John Windross has excelled himself this time. Last Tuesday he entered our office staggering under the weight of a cabbage the proportions of which fairly frightened us. The cabbage was of the variety known as marblehead mammoth and balanced the scales at 45-1/2 pounds. If any one can beat this we should like to know it. We claim that John Windross of Oconto county can beat any gardener in the state of Wisconsin, both in the size and quality of his vegetables.

The many friends of Uncle John Windross, of Oak Orchard, will be pleased to know that he is able once more to make his visits to the city with his richly laden wagon of garden produce. During the winter and spring he suffered an illness that caused his friends the deepest anxiety, and during a portion of the time was unconscious and unable to recognize his own children. We are glad to greet our old friend once more.

    John also appears in the 1880 U.S. census age, 59 born England; with wife Ann, age 50, born Ireland; with the following children Mary, age 20; Sarah age 16; John P. age 14; and Hattie all born in WI.

    On the 1900 census John is age 79. born May 1921 in England and immigrated in 1933. Ann, his wife, is age 58, born Ireland, immigrated in 1957. They have been married 45 years had 8 children 4 living, living with them is Sarah born Dec. 1863. Johns occupation is farmer. Also living with them is Anne Powell, age 10 boarder, attending school. Suspect this is granddaughter, daughter of Mary who died in 1893.

           15     ii. Judith WINDROSS was born in Wisconsin circa 1858. She married Eli BELL in Green Bay, WI, 02/10/1874. Eli is the son of James BELL and Louise LOCKE.

                            May have lived in Kenosha.
           16    iii .Anne WINDROSS was born Oconto Co., WI. 1859.  Anne died 17 June 1861 Oconto Co., WI., at 1 year of age. Age 3 years, 3 months 1 day. Buried Catholic Cemetery Oconto,

Orchard, town of Pensaukee, on May 19th, 1893. Deceased was a daughter of John Windross, one of the oldest settlers on the bay shore.

                            She married Charles H. POWELL Oconto Co., WI., 26 Dec. 1881. Recorded in Vol. 3, pg. 240. They were marled in a Catholic ceremony performed by John Borke. The witnesses were August and William Brunke and Johanns Windross. The Windross name is spelt Wintrows on this record.

                            Charles was born in Wisconsin 1860. Charles was the son of Frank POWELL and Caroline TWEFFER.

                            Charles Powell is enumerated on the 1900 census living in town of Pensaukee, age 48 widowed. Living with him are daughters Myrtle age 16, born Apr. 1884 and son George age, 14, born Jan. 1886. It appears another daughter Ann is boarding with her grandparents. Also in the house are Cora Morgan age 41, divorced, occupation domestic servant, with daughter Inez, age 9 born Oct. 1890.

    7. Charles WINDROSS (Charles, John) was born in Green Bay, WI. 12/29/1857. Charles died 02/01/1927 in Green Bay, WI., at 69 years of age. Oconto VR, Vol. 9, pg. 838. Obit appeared in the

Charles Windross passed away at St. Vincent's hospital, Green Bay, Sunday evening, after an illness of ten days, Chronic nephritis causing his death.

Deceased was born in Green Bay, December 29, 1858, and came to Oconto county forty-five years ago, residing in Pensaukee ten years and in Brookside thirty five years. He was married to Addie Smith July 18, 1898 at Brookside, who survives him together with one son Gaylord and one daughter Ardis. He also leave to mourn his death two brothers, George of Pensaukee, and William of Oconto, and three sisters. Mrs. Emma Morrissey, Mrs. Laura Perkins and Miss Mae Windross, all of Chicago.

Mr. Windross had conducted a general store at Brookside for the past thirty-five yeas and was highly esteemed by his associates. He had hosts of friends, who will deeply mourn his departure and his familiar face will be missed by his patrons.

The funeral, in charge of N. J. Gagnon, was held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock from the Brookside Methodist church, of which deceased was a member, Rev. C. E. Lease officiating. The remains were laid to rest at Brookside cemetery, the casket being encased in a metallic vault.

The friends who carried the remains to and from the funeral car were Frank Ellner, Louis Erdmann, Andrew Melville, Frank Bundy, Albert Behling and Basil
LeFevre.

The Floral offerings were many and beautiful, which showed the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The flowers were in charge of Clara Schultz, Alva Wilson, Arlene and Edna Atkins and Ruth and Helen LeFevre.

Those from out of town who came to pay their last respects were Mr. and Mrs. William Windross and Mrs. T. L. Melody of Oconto, George Windross and family of Pensaukee, Mr. and Mrs Edmund Atkins and family and Mrs. William Tingley of Fond du Lac, Mrs Laura Perkins and Miss Mae Windross of Chicago and Mrs. Oliver Couillard of Oconto Falls.

The Windross family have the sympathy of their numerous friends in their hour of sorrow.

    Addie was born in Gillett, WI. 16 Jan 1877. Addie was the daughter of Benjamin SCHMIDT and Mary (?) SCHMIDT. Addie died May 1959 in Oshkosh, WI, at 82 years of age. Obit appeared in

Mrs. Addie Windross, 82 formerly Oconto resident, died Saturday evening in Mercy Hospital, Oshkosh. Death followed an illness of three years.
The former Addie Schmidt was born January 16, 1877 at Gillett, daughter of the late Benjamin and Mary Schimdt. She was married to Charles Windross in 1898. They operated a general store at Brookside. He died in 1926 and she moved to Oconto, where she resided at 315 Congress until she moved to Oshkosh in 1945. She had been a member of the Methodist churches at Brookside, Oconto and Oshkosh.

The body was brought to the MacQueen- Sheffield Funeral home where funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon with the Reverend Harold Riebe officiating. Burial was in Brookside cemetery.

Pallbearers were Gaius Nichols, Raymond Matravers, Edward DeLano, Jack Thiede Julius Huebscher and Archie Erdman.
Survivors include a daughter Mrs. Charles (Ardis) Chasen of Oshkosh; a son, Gaylord, of Libertyville, 111.; a sister, Mrs. Eva Melody of Maywood, 111., and two grandchildren.

    Charles first established a general store at Pensaukee before he went to the Brookside where he lived the balance of his life.

Windross is to erect a store 25 X 50 on a lot purchased of Jesse Birmingham. The cellar is dug and the foundation walls are being laid this week.

    In his second year of operation he suffered a major loss, based on an article in the Oconto Reporter on Dec 31. 1897.   It states that on Sunday he had a fire. (December 27 1897) The paper states they saved $500 of merchandise with the remainder of $6,000 going up in smoke.

    Enumerated on the 1920 census in Town of Pensaukee. Charles is age 61, Addie is age 42, their son Gaylord C. is age 20, and Ardis V. is age 18. Charles lists his occupation as storekeeper, general store.

    This location is the store on south west corner of what is now Brookside Rd. and J which operates as a meat market in 2003.

           23     ii.   Ardis V. WINDROSS was born Oconto Co., WI. 8 Sept. 1901. Ardis died 2 Feb. 1998 in Ozaukee Co., WI., at 96 years of age. SS death index. It also shows a Charles born Jan, 3, 1904 died 11/19/1985 Boyton Beach, Palm Beach, FL. The only two Chaison with Wisconsin issued SS No. Last residence Thiensville, WI. She married Charles CHAISON.

    9. George WINDROSS (SR.) (Charles, John) was born in Oak Orchard, Wisconsin 19 Mar. 1864. George died 1 Feb. 1927 in Oak Orchard, Oconto Co., WI, at 62 years of age.

    He married Adela "Lilea" RICHER 14 April 1888. Adela was born in Brookside, Wisconsin 19 June 1873. Adela was the daughter of Peter Bonesteel RICHER and Emma Crisana WESTCOTT. Adela died 15 July 1932 in Oak Orchard, Wisconsin, at 59 years of age.

    On the 1900 census the family is enumerated with William, Olive and Grace with George's occupation farmer.

    Listed on 1920 census. George is age 55, Adelia is age 46 and they have George E. Jr. living with them age 15.

Oconto-- William Windross, 69, of 2112 Superior Ave., died Sunday at Oconto hospital where he had been a patient since Friday after suffering a heart attack.

A lifetime resident of Oconto, he was born June 12, 1890. He was a veteran of World War L He was married to the former Nellie Dancer June 12,1920 at Lincoln, Neb.

She survives with two sons, Wallace of Laisle, Ill., and Gene of Detroit; a brother, George Windross of Little Suamico; two sisters, Mrs. Olive Melendy and Mrs. Grace Hubbard of West Allis, and three grandchildren.

The body is at Gallagher funeral home where friends may call from 7 tonight until 2 p.m. Wednesday when final rites will be held. The Rev. Albert Hillestad will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. He married Nellie DANCER Lincoln, Neb., 12 June 1920.

    Nellie was born 1896. SS records indicate 22 Feb. 1895.

    Nellie died 4 Feb. 1976 in Oconto, WI, at 79 years of age. Buried Evergreen Cemetery, dates from gs.

Mrs. Frank Melendy, 71, West Allis, died Sunday in a Milwaukee hospital of a cerebral hemorrhage. The former Olive Windross was born in Oconto county the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. George Windross Sr, Pensaukee. Her Husband Frank preceded her in death in 1949. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Fred Garvens, Omir, a sister Mrs. Grace Hubbard, Long Beach, Calif and a brother George, Pensaukee and four grandchildren.
Service were held at the Slatery funeral home, West Allis on Tuesday. Mr. Windross. Mrs. Neal Eichman, Mrs. Vernon Zoeller, Pensaukee and Beryl Windross Green Bay attended the services. Burial was in the Brookside cemetery Wednesday at 1 o'clock

Known as Judge George died June 1981 in Oconto, WI, at 77 years of age. Buried Brookside cemetery. Last residence city Oconto according to SS death index.

At 9 o'clock New Year's Eve at Rev. H. Eisenbach's parsonage Miss Gladys Topel daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Capt. Topel, Pensaukee, became the bride of George Windross, also of Pensaukee. Miss Agnes Bucholtz of Underbill and Ole Johnson of Pensaukee were the attendants.
The bride wore a gown of wine colored crepe with hat to match. The young couple will reside in Oak Orchard, where the groom is engaged in farming and fishing. Mrs. Windross has been employed for six years at the Parker Hotel, doing dining room work.
                            Gladys was born Pensaukee, Oconto County, WI 10/26/1902.

                            Baptized with last name Krischefski on October 26, 1902. Sponsors Mrs. Inga Krischefski, Miss Martha Schuenke, and Mr. Carl Lubas at Chrustis Lutheran Church, Pensaukee. Gladys was the daughter of Ferdinand (KRISCHEFSKI) TOPEL and Nell E. LIVERMORE.

                            He married Sarah Marie NOEL in Oconto County, Wisconsin, 28 Sept. 1972. Sarah was born in Oconto Falls, Wisconsin 7/16/1907. Sarah was the daughter of Boniparte Joseph NOEL and Sarah FOSTER. She married Ed SKROBEL in Stiles, Wisconsin, 9/27/1925. She married Joe MURPHY in Oconto County, Wisconsin, 16 May 1949.     18  Hannah "Hattie" WINDROSS (John, John) was born in Wisconsin 1863. Hannah died 1918 Oconto Co., WI, at 55 years of age. Burial Brookside Cemetery.

    She married William T. SNYDER in Wisconsin, 1886. William was born Pensaukee, Wisconsin Aug. 1853. William was the son of Joshua SNYDER.

    Enumerated on 1900 census in town of Pensaukee, William is age 46, born Wisconsin of parents born in N.Y., occupation farmer; Hannah is age 37 born WI. of parents born in England; and they have been married for 14 years and had 4 children all living. They are William F, age 12, born July 1887; Esther 9, born Nov. 1890 and Winnifred, age 2, born Sept. 1897 and John 11 months, born July 1899.

W. T. Snyder came into this county twenty-five years ago, married a daughter of John Windross and two children have blessed their union. Previous to four years ago, at which time he settled down to permanent farming, he was, for twelve years, captain on the lakes and the smaller bodies of water. When Charles Hall of this city ran a saw mill at Cavour, in Forest county, there were but three families residing there and the entire vote of the town but thirty-four. At their first election Mr. Snyder was made Justice of the peace. It was the fall of Garfield's election to the presidency and thirty-four votes were republican - the four democrats being section hands upon the railroad. Mr. Snyder has a farm of 70 acres, is rugged and happy.

    He may be William T. son of Joshua and Rachel Snyder who are listed on 1880 census, Town of Pensaukee where he is shown as single male age 26. Living next to John Windross.

    William is enumerated on the 1910 census town of Pensaukee living between Chest Winans and Andrew Moe. William is age 57, born Wisconsin of parents from N.Y, state; married to Hannah age 48, born Wisconsin of parent born in England. They have been married 25 years and had 4 children all living. Their children living with them are Esther R. age 17?, occupation teacher, common school; Winfried A., age 12; and John age 10.

    .Hannah enumerated on 1920 census in town of Pensaukee. She is age 58, widowed living on her own.

They had been married when both were age 36. Their children are Frank, age 8; Carl, age 7; and Donald age 1 year and 2 months. Also living with them is William's mother Hannah age 67, widowed.
           29    ii.   Esther Ruth SNYDER was born Pensaukee, Wisconsin circa 1897. She married Merideth A. SAWYER Oconto Co., WI, 26 Dec. 1914. Oconto VR., Married by Wm. G. Vincent of Manitowoc, WI. Witnesses Eliz (?) of Oconto and Winda A. Sawyer of Menominee, Mich. Esther occupation is school teacher and she is age 24 as is Merideth who is a lawyer. It is a first marriage for both.
           30   iii.   Winifred A. SNYDER was born Pensaukee, Wisconsin 1898. Winifred died 10 Jan. 1963 in Oconto, WI., at 64 years of age. Obit appeared in the Oconto County Reporter,
Jan. 1963.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday for Mrs. Winifred Beaucock, 66, Pensaukee, who died Friday in the Oconto Hospital of a heart attack.

The former Winifred Snyder, a member of the First Presbyterian church ladies auxiliary and Rebekah lodge, was a teacher before her marriage to Leigh Beaucock Dec. 23, 1919. He preceded her in death in 1940.

The body lay in state from 7 p.m. Sunday at the Gallagher Funeral home, and Rebekah services were held at 8 a.m. The Rev. Newton Robert officiated at the funeral rites in First Presbyterian church, Oconto, and burial was in the Brookside cemetery.

Mrs. Beaucock is survived by a daughter, Rita, Mrs. Kermit Leonard, Pensaukee, two brothers, William Snyder and John Snyder both of Pensaukee; and sister, Mrs. Meredith Sawer. Menominee, Mich. and two grandchildren. She married Leigh BEAUCOCK in Wisconsin, 23 Dec. 1919.

                            Leigh was born Oconto Co., WI. July 1890. Leigh was the son of William M. BEAUCOCK and Genevieve "Jennie" Lydia MCKENNEY. Leigh died March 1957 at 66 years of age. Leigh is enumerated on 1930 census with his given name spelled Lee, age 38, born in Wisconsin as were his parents, married at age 28 to Winifred age 32 married at age 22. His occupation fisherman. The census confirms recorded information on their children. The family is enumerated between Frank Livermore and Raymond Swaer.
           31    iv. John Joshua SNYDER was born Pensaukee, Wisconsin 1900. He married Lillian (?) SNYDER. Enumerated on 1930 census in town of Pensaukee, occupation farming and fishing. John is age 30 married at age 25, to Lillian, age 28 married at age 23. The have a son Eugene who is age 2 yrs and 4 mo.

    20. Katherine "Kate" WINDROSS (John, John) was born in Oak Orchard, Wisconsin 05/04/1868. Katherine died March 1963 in Little Suamico, WI., at 94 years of age.

LITTLE SUAMICO — Mrs. John Grosse, 94, Little Suamico, died this morning at her home after a seven month illness. The former Katherine Windross was born May 4, 1868, in Oak Orchard, and was a lifelong resident of the area. She married Mr. Grosse on Nov., 21, 1888. Her husband died in 1926. Two sons and one daughter also preceded her in death.

Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Harry (Gretchen) Ahlers, Sturgeon Bay, Mrs. Ruth Jolly, Milwaukee; two sons, Kenneth and Giles, both of Little Suamico; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.

Friends may call at Mac-Queen-Sheffield Funeral Home, Oconto, after 2 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Mr. Matzke officiating. Burial will be in the Grosse family cemetery, Little Suamico.

    She married John GROSSE in Wisconsin. John was born in Little Suamico, WI. 1865. John was the son of Johan Wilhelm "John" GROSSE and Maria Louis (?) GROSSE.

OCONTO- Mrs. Marie A Couillard, 65, a lifelong resident of Oconto County, died today at Oconto Hospital. She had been ill since early, this month with a heart ailment.

Mrs. Couillard, who lived at 610 Mains St., worked for 30 years in the county treasurer's office. She was a member of Oconto Eastern Star.

Final rites for Mrs. Couillard, who was born December 18, 1890, at Little Suamico, have not been completed. The body is at Gallagher funeral home.

Survivors are a son, John Edwin Couillard of Minneapolis; her mother, Mrs Kate Grosse of Little Suamico; two brothers, Kenneth and Giles Grosse of Little Suamico; two sisters, Mrs Ruth Jolly of Milwaukee and Mrs Harry Ahlers of Surgeon Bay, and two grandchildren.

                             Her husband, Asa Couillard, died in 1936.

                             She married Asa Jacob COUILLARD Menominee, MI, February 15, 1913. Asa and Marie eloped to Menominee to get married.

                             Asa was born Couillardville, Wisconsin March 18, 1889. Asa was the son of Thomas Edwin COUILLARD and Mary Ann MATRAVERS. Asa died November 19, 1936 Oconto, Wisconsin, at 47 years of age. Obit appeared in the

Asa J. Couillard., 47, county treasurer for nine years, and active in civic and county affairs all his life, passed away at his home on Congress street at 12:40 p.m. today after a severe illness of three months. Funeral arrangement had not yet been completed.

Known throughout the county for his long record of untiring service, his death leaves vacant a place which will be hard to fill.

Mr. Couillard was born March 18, 1889 at Couillardville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Couillard. On Feb. 13, 1912 he married Marie Grosse at Menominee, Michigan. As a boy he had attended the Couillardville school and later took summer school work in Oconto to prepare himself for teaching.

For a period of ten years he taught in schools in the towns of Chase, Suamico, Brazeau, Brookside and Stiles, and for two years in Walworth county. He returned for a few years to the farm home In Couillardville, and in 1923 accepted an appointment by the county board as county treasurer. He was re-elected to this office in 1924, 1926,1928 and 1930, resigning in 1931 to become a partner of Julius Heisinger in the Heisinger Insurance agency here. He remained active in this business until the time of his illness.

He entered the hospital for treatment on August 31, this year, and had been in critical condition since that time, suffering from a serious heart condition.

He was a member of Pine Lodge No. 188, F. & A. M.. L. O. O. F Lode No. 190, and a charter member of the Oconto Kiwanis club. He was several times manger of, and always active in, the Oconto county corn and potato show since it organization. For several years he was chairman of the Oconto county chapter of Red Cross.

Always interested in athletic events, he was one time head of arrangements for a county-wide basketball tournament. He was an ardent fan of high school basketball.

He is survived by his widow and parents, on son, Edwin, who is attending Jordan college at Menominee, Midi., two sisters, Mrs. D. J. Laduron, Brookside, and Mrs. Leroy Fox, Columbus, Wis.

Funeral arrangements are not yet complete by may be held from the MacQueen funeral chapel, where the body is at present.

                            His body was interred November 22. 1936 Oconto, Wisconsin. Oconto VR. Vol. 13, pg 10.

                            Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church, Oconto and were conducted by Rev. Starr H. Lloyd. There also was a Masonic service at the church and an Odd fellow service at grave side. Buried Evergreen Cemetery, Lot 4 Block 44

                            Asa, like his sisters, was a school teacher. He taught school for 10 years in the towns of Chase, Suamico, Brazeau, Brookside, Stiles as well as 2 years in Walworth County. He returned to his parents farm and farmed a few years before being appointed County Treasure in May of 1923. He was re-elected to this office 4 times. He resigned in 193 2 to become a partner in the Jules Heisinger insurance agency, on April 1, 1932.   Asa was very involved in community service and was an avid fan for basketball.

                            Asa is enumerated on the 1930 census living in the Town of Oconto, and he is county treasurer.

                            Marie was a good cook and was the first person, I knew, who made her own hand dipped chocolates with cream centers. They were delicious and always a treat if she had them when you stopped.
           36     v.   Kenneth GROSSE. He married Dorothy PETTY in Oconto, WI., 15 July 1931. Dorothy was born in Oconto County, Wisconsin 29 Dec. 1909. Dorothy was the daughter of Herbert PETTY (Sr.) and Lubertia LIVERMORE. Dorothy died 15 April 2004 in Oconto, WI., at 94 years of age. Obit appeared in Oconto County Reporter.

Mrs. Dorothy L. Grosse, 94, Grosse Rd., Little Suamico, died Thursday morning, April 15, 2004 at Bayshore Pines, Oconto. She was born December 29,1909 in Brookside to Herbert Petty and Luberta (Livermore) Petty. On July 15, 1931, she married Kenneth W. Grosse at Oconto. She resided for the rest of her life in the Grosse family home at Little Suamico. She was proud of her accomplishments as a homemaker and especially enjoyed preparing large Sunday dinners which were enjoyed by family and friends alike. She was also very fond of her pansy garden.

Survivors include two daughters, Muriel Peters of Little Suamico and Lynn Reed of Oconto; one son, Ron (Karen) Grosse of Green Bay; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth (Blessie) (Clarence) Hooten of Oconto and June (Alien) Zeugner of Pensaukee.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, six brothers and one sister. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Private interment will be held. The Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, is assisting the family.
