CASEY STILL GOES TO BAT AS ACTIVE 85'er
Ella Casey, by all accounts is a remarkable woman.
A Sparks resident for more than 50 years, Casey leads an active and productive life most other 85 year olds would envy. She is a member of the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program and spends most of that time working at the Care and Share Nutrition Site in Sun Valley.
Just about everyday from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m., Casey is on hand at the center to help serve the pre-prepared meals to about 45 seniors. She is usually the first one to help clean up the kitchen and then collects the money for the center's daily bingo. On the last Friday of every month, she bakes three, three-layered birthday cakes for members celebrating their birthdays at the site.
Busy as she is, Casey still finds time to belong to the Gold and Silver Club and attends its functions every third Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Sparks. She also is a member of the Royal Neighbors of America, a fraternal organization with roots in the Midwest.
At home, Casey does all of her own housework, works on her ceramics, crochets, cooks and bakes for her friends and family. A widow since 1961, she is the mother of four children, 13 grandchildren, two step grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
"Gram has touched all of our lives in one way or another," said grandson and Sparks resident James. "With this lady in your life, you never have to feel that you don't have a friend in the world."
James said "going to grandma's house was always special and even today when I go by to mow her lawn, she sets me out a seven-course meal."
Casey moved to Sparks from Wisconsin in 1930 with her husband Earl Casey, whose folks settled here in 1905.
A bride at 17, Casey never regretted marrying young. She met her husband of 41 years in 1919---- " His mother's sister was married to my dad's brother"---- and has always enjoyed living in the Sparks-Reno area. " We've seen it build, I'll tell you."
The 4-foot-11 Casey, who has been active all of her life, said she likes being independent and on the go. "My health is good and I'm always here to help when my family needs me, she noted.
When all is well, she
and a friend take the bus once a month to the High Sierra Hotel Casino
at Lake Tahoe for a day out of town. " I gamble a little and once
in awhile I even win." Said Casey. "I never come home broke."
