W.W. Whitcomb

W.W. Whitcomb has lived on his present farm in Pensaukee township, Oconto county, for the past thirty-four years, having come here with an ox-team and covered wagon from Walworth county.

Mr. Whitcomb was born in Erie county, N. Y. in 1841, son of Edmond and Louisa (Marsh) Whitcomb, the father a native of New York, the mother of Vermont. They were married in New York State. In 1841, when Wisconsin was still a Territory, the family removed westward, locating in Kenosha county, Wis., where the father opened up a farm in the woods, this being their home until 1861. In that year they came to northern Wisconsin, settling on a new farm in Pensaukee township, Oconto county, where or subject now resides. In this region the parents passed the remainder of their lives, both dying on a farm in Suamico township to which they had removed, the father in 1893 and the mother in 1882. They were the parents of three children, viz; W. W.; Caroline (Mrs. Edgar Delano), of Pensaukee; and H. D., sheriff of Oconto county.

Our subject received his education in the schools of Kenosha county, were he passed his youth and early manhood. He was twenty years old when he came to Oconto county, with whose interests he has ever been identified, especially in the agricultural development of Pensaukee township. He opened up a farm and is now the the owner of eighty acre of good land in Section 25, all of which is cleared, sixty acres being under cultivation. In addition to the labor involved in the care and improvement of his farm he has worked in the lumber woods to some extent for F. B. Gardner Lumber Co. Mr. Whitcomb has taken an active interest in the affairs of the community where he has so long made his home, and has aided materially in its improvement and transformation from a forest wild to a condition of cultivated fertility.

In 1866 Mr. Whitcomb was united in marriage, in Suamico township, with Miss Elizabeth Barker, and five children have been born to this union, as follows; Percy, Joycie (Mrs. Nicholas, residing in Pensaukee township), Herbert, Leslie and Eric. Mrs. Whitcomb was born in New Hampshire, daughter of James and Lucinda (Gould) Barker, who were also natives of that State where Mrs. Barker died. In 1858 Mr. Barker came to Pensaukee, Oconto county, and here passed the remainder of his life, dying in Oconto in 1870.

This sketch would be incomplete were mention not made of Mr. Whitcomb's service during the war of the Rebellion. On December 28, 1863, he enlisted for three years or during the war, at Madison, Wis., in Company F, Twelfth Wisconsin V. I. , and served in the army of the Tennessee, joining his command at Vicksburg. He participated in the siege of Atlanta, was on the famous march to the sea, went through the Carolina campaign, and saw active service at the battle of Bentonville, N. C. (1865), taking part also in every engagement in 1864 in which his command was engaged. He participated in the Grand Review at Washington, D.C., and was discharged July 23, 1865 at Madison, after an honorable army career of over a year and a half. In political sentiment Mr. Whitcomb is a Republican.

The New Sheriff
Upon hs arrival at Abrams, one week ago Thursday, H. D. Whitcomb, the
newly elected sheriff, was met at the depot by about 100 of his acquaintances
and given a cow bell, horn and pan serenade.  The Liberty pole was decorated
with flags its entire length, and as a cap sheaf to the celebration some one
presented him with a star as large as a cheese decorated in red, white and
blue, which was pinned upon his coat, and a club as big as a fence post and
wound with bunting was placed in his hand.  Then they gave three cheers for
their fellow townsman and the deed was done.

FUNERAL FOR H.D. WHITCOMB HELD MONDAY
Early History of County Recalled by Death of Pioneer

The funeral for Harry D. Whitcomb, Oconto County pioneer resident, was
held yesterday morning from St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. L. C.
Becker officiating.  Interment was in the Brookside cemetery.  The
pallbearers were six grandsons, Harold Bent, Clintonville, Donald Bent, Land
O' Lakes, Russell Whitcomb, Minocqua; Crosby and John, Abrams, Lester
Whitcomb, Jr., Milwaukee.  Attorney Arthur J. Whitcomb, Milwaukee, a son,
left his sickbed in Milwaukee to attend the funeral here.

The death of Mr. Whitcomb, a former Oconto County Board Chairman, and
county sheriff recalled earlier days of Oconto County conditions and
political history.  Born in Kenosha in 1850, then known as Southport, Wis.,
Mr. Whitcomb moved with his parents to Elkhorn, Wis. at the age of Six.

 Shingles Were Money

In 1861 he came with his parents to Oconto county settling in the town
of Little Suamico on what is still the Whitcomb farm.  This farm was
originally homesteaded from the government by his father, Edmund Whitcomb,
who had walked to Oconto county 200 miles from Elkhorn to locate the site.
The move from Elkhorn was made by ox team which required two months.  Until
1871, when the railroad was extended north of Green Bay, they carried their
provisions from Green Bay, 20 miles to the south, paying for their provisions
with pine shingles shaved by hand from timber on the homestead and delivered
by ox-team.

Mr. Whitcomb was united in marriage on August 21, 1873 to Susan
Porter, a union which lived for more than sixty years.  The widow and six
children survive.  Through years of toil the homestead of virgin timber was
converted into a modern day farm with new lands acquired increasing the
holding to 320 acres.  In the early days, after the timber was gone, Mr.
Whitcomb went into the wholesale meat business with the lumber camps and
railroads which were being extended in northern Wisconsin and upper Michigan
as his markets.  Refrigeration was unknown in those days and he shipped
carloads of livestock from Chicago to the Whitcomb farm for slaughter, then
in the cool of the night hauled it to Oconto

Held Public Office

Mr. Whitcomb was identified with the political life of Oconto county
for many years.  From 1888 t0 1895 he served as chairman of the town of
Little Suamico and as a member of the county board.  In 1894 he was elected
sheriff of the county and when he completed his term and returned to the
farm, he was again elected town chairman in 1897 from when he continued to
sit on the county board for many years.  In 1892 he was elected chairman of
the county board.  The present courthouse and county building was then just
being completed.  It had been build in a swampy piece of ground and Mr.
Whitcomb was one of the county board committed charged with the
responsibility of having the frog pond surrounding the new courthouse filled
in.  He showed great interest in the development of churches and schools and
served for several years as a district school officer.

In 1912 Mr. Whitcomb retired from active farming and for five years
lived in the village of Abrams.  In 1917 he purchased a home in Oconto
residing here until his death last Friday.  Mr. Whitcomb was the last
surviving member of the county board of supervisors of 1891 which provided
for the construction of the present courthouse.  L. W. Brazeau, another
pioneer county board member of that early year, preceded him in death by a
week.  Mr. Whitcomb was also one of the two remaining county officers of the
time, the other being John P. Merline who served as county treasurer from
1890 to 1894 and now conducts a grocery business on Oconto's Main st.

Generation No. 1

1. EDMOND S.2WHITCOMB (SAMUEL1) was born 14 July 1814 in Dryden, Tompkins County, New York, and died 02 January 1893 in Little Suamico, Oconto County, Wisconsin. He married LOUISA MARSH 1838 in Dryden, Tompkins County, New York, daughter of Marsh.

Notes

The founder of the Whitcomb family in Oconto County is Edmond Whitcomb and his wife, Louisa Marsh. Edmond was born July 14, 1814 in Tompkins County New York. The parents of both Edmond and Louisa remain unknown at this time. Louisa was born in Vermont in 1813. The 1820 Census shows two Whitcomb families living in Dryden. Unfortunately the early census did not name the children living in the households, only the ages and sex of the children. The two Whitcomb families living in Dryden were Martin and Samuel. Martin has no children and Samuel's household would be a match.

Marriage years narrowed down to 1838/39 based on Grantor/Grantee Indexes for Dryden, Tompkins County New York. In 1838 land was sold to Edmund Whitcomb by Levi Whitcomb (believed to be a brother) and in 1839 the same property is being sold by Edmund and Louisa Whitcomb.

Vital Records for the time were kept as part of the Town Records. The records for the Town of Dryden were destroyed in a fire. Thus birth dates and such are taken from secondary sources such as obituaries. Some liberties are taken with assuming that Samuel is the father of Edmond. All records (census) lean toward him as the only potential father.

In 1842, Edmond and Louisa are living in the Wisconsin Territory, in Brighton, Racine (Later Kenosha) County, Wisconsin. Record in on Page 5.

In 1846 & 1847 Wisconsin Territorial Census, the Whitcomb family is still living in Brighton, now Kenosha County. Page 117 and 123

In 1855 the Wisconsin State Census shows Edmond and Louisa are living in Geneva, Walworth County, Wisconsin. In 1860, the Federal Census shows that they are still in Geneva, Walworth County, in Dwelling number 172, Family number 152 found on page 216.

Louisa Marsh Whitcomb died in 1882. There is no death record on file and no obituary was found. She is buried beside Edmond in the Brookside Cemetery.

Edmond died on January 2nd, 1893 at the home of his son, H. D. Whitcomb. There is no death record for Edmond either but his obituary was found in the Oconto County Reporter, Friday, January 13, 1893
