It is still a work in progress.  I'm sure there are mistakes, omissions and people I couldn't find. Any feedback is welcome. I'm always eager to add new relatives.  And thank you to the many people who have given me names and dates and shared family histories.  Janet and Jason

OCONTO COUNTY REPORTER, Sept. 28, 1878:  A Long Life.  There arrived in this city, one day last week, Mr. Thomas Tourtillott Sr., father of Abel, Henry and Thomas Tourtillott, of this place, who has attained the somewhat remarkable age of more than 92 years, having been born in Penobscot County, Maine, on the 22nd day of April, 1786.  He has been married twice and has raised 14 children (7 by each wife) all of whom lived to raise families of their own. We believe the oldest (Able Tourtillott) is about 66 years old and lives here. The old gentleman has had the pleasure of greeting two great-great grandchildren, the children of Mrs. Sam Orr, his great-grandchild. Thus five generations gathered under one roof. Truly a long life, which began before Washington was President of the USA, and indeed, before the USA existed as a government.

Notes for ABEL TOURTILLOTT:  The Centennial History of Oconto County, written by Richard Hall , published in 1876 in the Oconto County Reporter:  Late in the decade of 1840 Dr. HALL with Abel TOURTILOTT and Charles MARCY, both splendid canoe men, and I believe one other man, started with a log canoe to ascend and explore the Menominee and its tributaries. It will be remembered that there were then no roads; the pine woods had been pierced but a few miles, and all the wonderful upriver country was known only by report of the traders or the few who had been out on geological or mineral explorations. The canoe was heavy, but was forced up the stream and over all the portages and into Brule River, where they turned back. By this trip was first learned something of the immense quantities of pine on the river and its tributaries and also much of its mineral wealth.

It may not be amiss to mention the names of some of the men who were the pioneer lumbermen on that river as some of them are still living in the county.

Abel and Henry TOURTILLOTTE were there for several years. Abel especially was long a foreman and mainstay. Charles McLEOD was vigorous and efficient; Levi HALE, Jacob JOHNSON, John P. SEYMOUR and Josh CREAMER, all now of Peshtigo were now much relied on. Jacob KERN and Daniel and John CORRY came later, but were leading men; so was John BREEN, Thomas J. STREETER will not be forgotten by any who knew him.

Shawano Leader, Thursday, November 5, 1891: Abel Tourtillott an old settler of Northeast Wisconsin, died at Keshena on Sunday last at the advanced age of 82 years. Mr. Tourtillott had been a resident of this part of the state since 1841. His funeral took place yesterday.

12.  CHARLOTTE M7 TOURTILLOTT (ABEL6, THOMAS B5, ABRAHAM4, ABRAHAM3, ABRAHAM2, GABRIEL1) was born about 1856 in Oconto, Oconto, Wisconsin, USA, and died 13 Jun 1896 in Keshena, Shawano, Wisconsin, USA54.  She married HENRI MELOTTE55 about 1871 in Oconto, Oconto, Wisconsin, USA, son of FRANCOIS MELOTTE and APPOLONIA KAU.  He was born about 1845 in Green Bay, Brown, Wisconsin, USA, and died Apr 1914 in Keshena, Shawano, Wisconsin, USA56.

Notes for CHARLOTTE M TOURTILLOTT:  Thursday, June 18, 1896:  DROWNING ACCIDENT ON THE RESERVE:  News was received here Saturday of the death by drowning of the wife of Henry Melotte, a Menomonee Indian living on the reservation north of here, together with an infant daughter about 18 months old. The facts concerning the sad affair are as follows: Melotte and his wife and family of three children left their home near Keshena Friday morning to go to Meshawquotte lake, distant some 10 or 12 miles to the east to spend a few days fishing. They arrived there about 5:00 in the afternoon and their team being tired and thirsty, immediately drove into the lake to quench their thirst. When a sufficient depth of water was reached Melotte essayed to stop his team, but found that one of the bits had broken and was unable to do so. The horses kept on walking and soon reached a place where the sand bank on which they were standing shelved rapidly downward to a depth of 20 to 30 feet, when horses, wagon and occupants were precipitated into the deep waters of the lake. Melotte cautioned his family to hang onto the wagon box, but the youngest child soon fell from same and the mother, in endeavoring to rescue her little one, also fell into the lake and was drowned with it in her arms. On reaching shore with his remaining children, Melotte began the melancholy task of searching for the bodies of his wife and child, and soon succeeded in bringing them to the surface. The team of horses, impeded in their movements by the harness, were also drowned.

Notes for HENRI MELOTTE:  Advocate, April 7 1914: Henry Melotte, a Menominee Indian, died at Keshena on Saturday last and the funeral was held Tuesday morning at the Catholic Church. Deceased was 71 years of age and was a member of Company P, 16 WI Volunteer Infantry.

13.  HANNAH7 TOURTILLOTT (ABEL6, THOMAS B5, ABRAHAM4, ABRAHAM3, ABRAHAM2, GABRIEL1) was born Jan 1861 in Wisconsin, USA62, and died Aft. 1920 in Oklahoma, USA.  She married ROBERT P NEWTON63 30 Jun 1873 in Oconto, Wisconsin, USA64, son of DANIEL NEWTON and CYNTHIA PALMER.  He was born 1850 in Essex, Vermont, USA65.

Notes for HANNAH TOURTILLOTT:  Oconto County Reporter, Jan. 31, 1880.   Almost a Holocaust.  On Saturday last the family of Robert Newton, at Maple Valley barely escaped a terrible calamity. Mrs. Newton awoke about five A.M. and having lighted the fire, went back to bed; she awoke soon after to find the room on fire and in her excitement ran out of doors to get snow and water to extinguish the flames, forgetting her two children who were in the bed. Finding it impossible to save her home, she sprung into the flames,  and seized her children, barley escaping with life. Had she slept a few minutes longer, her sleep would have been a fatal one.  Mr. Robert Newton is in the woods, and loses all by the fire. Able Tourtilotte is around soliciting subscriptions for their aid and thus far, reports many kind donations.

Oconto County Reporter, April 21, 1893:  Newton Is Guilty, The Jury Brings in a Verdict of Murder in the Second Degree.  The trial of Robert Newton, of Gillett, charged with the killing of Richard Kingston at that village in November, 1892, came to an end Tuesday afternoon at six o'clock at which time the jury filed into the court room and the foreman pronounced the ominous words; "We the jury, find the prisoner, Robert Newton, guilty of murder in the second degree." Thus ended a trail that had engrossed the attention of the circuit court and several hundred of our citizens for eight days.

Three special venires, consisting of 100 men, were exhausted in the work of obtaining a jury and nearly 100 witnesses were examined. The prosecution was ably conducted by District Attorney P. A. Martineau, who managed his points like a veteran, when in fact it was the first criminal case he had ever tried. Attorney D. G. Classon appeared for the defense, and considering the preponderance of evidence he had to contend against he made a valiant fight.

The jury was composed of the following persons: Mike Femell, foreman; R. J. Livermore, Wm. Shew, Jas. Collins, John Courtois, Joseph Melchor, J. J. Greetans, A. Whittaker, S. W. Smith, Herman Yakel, Wm. Ross and Thos. Perkins. As soon as they had handed in the verdict, Judge Hastings discharged them, first complimenting them upon the result of their work.

Story of the Crime:  The crime in which Newton was convicted was the shooting of Richard Kingston last November, the particulars of which are as follows; Sometime before the fatal day Kingston had brought a bag containing blankets from his home in the town of Armstrong to the village of Gillett, and meeting Newton in the store of Weber Runkle comp'y asked him to carry the bag up to the house of George High, (Newton's brother-in-law) with whom Newton lived, stating that the blankets belonged to High. Newton promised to do so, and Kingston thought no more of the matter. Later High sent word to Kingston to return the blankets, and Kingston sent a reply to the effect he had given them to Newton to carry home. Subsequently, upon visiting Gillett he was accosted by Mrs. High (Newton's sister) who stated Newton denied receiving the blankets from him. Kingston said he would see "Bob" about it, and on being told by Mrs. High that Bob was at her house he in company of Mrs. High's son, started for the house. Upon entering the house young High passed into a rear room and told his uncle Bob that Kingston was in the front room and he had come to see him about the blankets. Newton at once stepped into the room where Kingston was and before a dozen words had passed between them commenced shooting with a self-cocking revolver. Kingston fell with a shattered limb and five bullets in him, when he claimed Newton seized a chair and struck him several blows with it. Newton then left the house by the rear door, while Kingston managed to drag himself out the front door and to a neighbor's. As the shooting commenced young High ran down the village and gave the alarm, and a number of persons at once started for the scene. They found Kingston lying in front of Klemp's house, and conveyed him to the hotel, where he lingered until the fourth day, when death ended his suffering

Oconto County Reporter, April 28, 1893:  Waupun For Twenty-Five Years.  On Monday morning Robert Newton, the man whom the jury pronounced guilty of murder in the second degree, was brought onto court to receive his sentence. Judge Hastings, after asking the prisoner if he had anything to say why sentence should not be passed upon him, sentenced him to twenty-five years imprisonment in the state prison at Waupun, one day in each year to be passed in solitary confinement. The prisoner was taken back to jail, and the next day Sheriff Quirt accompanied him to Waupun.
