Joseph Tibbetts, of Middle Inlet, Mich., whose
death, on the 2d instant, and burial in the Oconto Cemetery on the 4th,
were noticed in last week's Reporter, was born in Columbia, ME., Oct. 25,
1833, there attained to man's estate, and in the hour of his country's
peril enlisted in a Massachusetts regiment of heavy artillery, from which
he was transferred to the navy, and in both of which he did honorable and
valiant service. On Nov. 29 (Thanksgiving Day), 1860 at Stoneham, Mass.,
Miss Philena E. Jackson became his wife, and the two journeyed together
till death called the husband away. They came to Oconto in 1872 and made
this city their home until about five years ago, when the removed to Middle
Inlet, to make their home with Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Dropp, son-in-law and
only daughter. Mr. Tibbetts was a blacksmith and held the confidence and
esteem of his neighbors wherever he has lived. He died of paralysis, the
first stroke occurring the day preceding his death. Members of the Grand
Army escorted his remains to the cemetery. Funeral services were held at
his late home, conducted by the Rev. W. W. Hendry. Among those who came
with the remains to Oconto from Middle Inlet were Messrs. Hendry, Dropp,
Ford, Hillman and David Tibbitts, E. H. Van Keuven and Frank Page, and
