1925 John H.Shufelt, 87, died at his home on Pecor Street Monday evening at
11:05 p.m. from causes incident to old age. Five years ago he experineced a
paralytic stroke. He had been a resident of this city and county for a period of
fifty-six years.
He was born in Dix Town, Steuben Co New York, on May 8, 1838. He married
Josephine Emick in Pennsylvania, on July 4, 1864 , and five years later came to
this city where he was employed as a mill-wrigth with the firm of Holt and
Balcom. In 1882 he moved to a farm in the town of Little River, fourteen years
ago he retired and returned to this city.

He is survived by three children Rolla B. Shufelt, Little River, Mrs. Irma
Payne, and Mrs. Louis Olson, Oconto, also by nine grandchildren and twenty great
grandchildren.
The funeral will be held from his home today at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. R. A.
Garrison officiating. The pallbearers will be his six grandson, Dean, and Asa
Payne, Lyle and Leslie Shufelt, Frank McMonagle and John Reed.
Out of town people at the funeral were Frank Shufelt of Minneapolis, and Asa
Payne of Kenosha. Interment was made in Evergreen Cemetery.
( He is buried at Evergreen cemetery Lot number 8, block number 16 died of
appolexy.
JOSPHINE EMICH is the daughter of Henry Emich & Sarah Gamble. She was born on 23
Mar 1843 in Brown Twon, Lycoming Co Pa. She died on 22 Jul 1913 in Oconto,
Wisc..
Notes for Josphine Emich: Research Notes: She is buried at Evergeen Cemetery,
lot number N 1/2 3 block 27. died of apoplexy obit for Mrs. John Shufelt, a
respected resident of the city of Oconto and the town of Little River for the
last 44 years, died at her home on Pecor street at 4:25 Tueday afternoon just
six weeks after having been stricken with paralysis.
Mrs. Shufelt whoe maiden name was Josphine Emich, was born at Brown Twon,
Lycoming Co Pa, March 23, 1843 and was married to Mr. Shufelt July 4, 1864. In
1869 they came to this city and later moved to their farm in the twon of Little
River where they would resided until recently when they returned to the city.
She is survied by her husband, one son Rolla B Shufelt, and two daughters.Mrs.
W.D. Payne and Mrs. Luis Olson of this city.
The funeral was held from her home at 2 o’clock this afternoon and her remains
laid at rest in Evergreen cemetery, Mrs. and Mrs. John Reed of Green Bay were
here to attend the funeral.

P. S. Shufelt passed away. Peter S. Shufelt , for more than half a century a
well known and respected resident of Oconto, passed away, May 21, at Butte,
Mont. from a general breakdown, his final illness lasting only five days. Since
he left here about a year and a half ago he had been residing with his son,
Carl, at Missoula, Mont., and a few days before his death had gone to visit his
other son Ellis, at Butte. Deceased was born in New York state June 8, 1833, and
came to Wisconsin in 1857, first settling in Green Bay.
A little later he went to Stiles and was employed there by Eldred and Balcom. In
1861 he came to Oconto and entered the employ of the Oconto Company and remained
in charge of their sawmill as foreman until about six years ago when he retired.
He was married in 1879 to Miss Susan Dukelow who preceded him in death several
years ago.
He is survived by his two sons, Ellis O. and Carl D. and by one sister Mrs.
Hannah Miller of Beaver Dam, N. Y. and tow brothers, Edward of Massilon, Ohio
and John of Oconto.
His remains were brought here on the 10:57 train Tuesday forenoon, accompanied
by his son Carl and wife and was taken directly to the Presbyterian church from
which the funeral was held at two o’clock the same afternoon. Rev. McLandress
officiating. From there he was escorted by the local masonic lodge., of which he
was a member, to his last resting place in Evergreen Cemetery where he was laid
to rest with the beautiful and impressive masonic burial service.
Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Ford of Chicago were here to attend the funeral.

Rolla Bruce Shufelt, 73, pioneer farmer of Oconto, passed away at his farm in
the town of Little River Sunday at 6:30 a.m. Funeral services were held at two
o’clock Tuesday afternoon conducted by the I.0.O.F. lodge, Pall bearers wre his
grandsons, and the flowers were in charge of his granddaughters. funeral
services were in charge of the Gallagher Funeral Home and interment was in the
Evergreen Cemetery in Oconto.
Mr. Shufelt was born December 11, 1865 in New York State and came to Oconto
county about sixty-five years ago. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John
Reed, and Mrs. Frank McMonagle; two sons, Lyle and Leslie, all of Oconto,sixteen
grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren

been for five years a member of the staff of the First Methodist church in Oak
Park. During these years made a large place for herself in the church and the
community and as a district officer in the Woman’s Foreign Missionary society
and Woman’s Home Missionary society.
Dr. and Mrs. English left immediately for the Canadian lake region and will
return to Oak Park about Sept. 1. They have an unanimous invitation of the
official board in continue in the pastorate of the church.
Dr. English is widely known throughout the church thought his connection with
the benevolent boards. being now the recording secretary of the board of
education. During his pastorate in Oak Park the magnificent church structure
costing over half a million dollars has been erected during which time the
church has made a noteworthy advance in it’s support of the benevolences and
other international interests of the denomination.

He graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point with a masters
degree and was employed by Beloit Public Schools as an elementary teacher,
retiring 1980. He was an Air Force veteran and was a member of the Believes
faith Fellowship, American Legion Post 40 Beloti Retired tTeachers Association,
and was currently president of the Beloit Apartment Association.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian of Beloit, one son, Stanley Robert (Diane)
Shufelt of Wisconsin Rapids; tow daughters, Linnae (Clayton) Byrns of Beloit and
Geri Shufelt of Beloit, five grandchildren, James B. Shufelt, Brad R. Shufelt
and Katherine R. Shufelt, all of Wisconsin Rapids, Connie Byrns of Rockford, and
Robert Byrns of Beloit, He was predeceased by his parents, tow brothers and two
sisters. Services will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday Aug. 14, in Daley, Murphy, Wisc

The book is "OUR Folks"... A history of the Shufelt
family by Henry B. Shufelt. It was done in 1935 by the Shufelt Family
Association of all the known Shufelt / Shufeldt and various spelling. In Oconto
County the censuses have it spelled Shofret and Shoepelt as well as Shufert.
Some of the Shufelts did come down from Canada, such as those who migrated to
Poygan, Wisconsin, and some came across America from New York State to Ohio and
Pennsylvania, as the Oconto County family did.
Zophel was the orginal name which became Zufelt, then
Shufelt and Shufeldt in 1910 or so, for a lot of them. The original surname is
German and they came to America from in the Palentines. This is an area between
France and Germany that was hotly contested by each country for centuries, and
fueled by the 30 Year War over religion, that caused the population to fall to
one third the original due to disease, famine, economic depression, loss of
jobs, distruction of land, injuries and emigration starting in the 1600's and
lasting over 100 years.
The first in this Shufelt family to immigrate to North
America was one in 1709. They then started speading out. Some Zufelt
members went to Canada to stay away from the American Revolution to avoid
fighting England. Yet others are buried as American Soldiers of the Revolution.
They came back and forth from Canada during the American Revolution, which was
fought from 1776 to 1787, to have their children with some of the group staying
in Quebec, Canada, after the war.

the photo of the Rolla B. Shufelt barnyard. It was donated by Edith
Shufelt of Seattle, Washington in 1968. She was a young girl around the
time the photo was taken, and she's the one who identified it as the
Rolla B. Shufelt farm.

Rolla and Emma Shufelt inherited from Frederick
Grade (Emma's father). Frederick and his family arrived in Little River
in 1868. Plat maps show the property as belonging to Frederick Grade in
1898. He died in 1899. Plat maps from 1912 show Emma Shufelt as the
owner of that farm. Census records show Emma and Rolla living there with
Frederick's widow (Emma's mother) in 1900 and 1910. Of course, even
though the property was in Emma's name, Rolla is listed as the "head of
household" in the Census records. Notes

A quiet wedding ceremony was preformed at the residence of Mr. Peter Shufelt,
in this city at 5:00 on Wednesday (Christmas Eve)
thecontracting parities being
Mr. J. S. Ford, of this city, and Miss Grace Dukelow, of LaCrosse,
Wis., sister of Mrs. Shufelt. The marriage rites
were performed by Rev. S. W. Ford,
father of the groom, and only the relatives of the happy couple and limited
number
of friends were
present.

of only five days. Mrs. Shufelt before her marriage was a teacher in our
public schools.
