As a girl of age 13 in 1880, Ann Ellen Russell did this piece while a student
(probably 8th grade). It has 13 flesh-tined shades in the petipoint of the face
of the Christ
Child. In 1944, her daughter, Genevieve Wren Sass, took it to Marshall
Field & Co in Chicago to be properly framed and sealed. At the time they offered
to purchase the piece but it was far too precious to the family as an heirloom.
Up until this point it had benn in a bos in th attic of Ann Ellen Russell Wren's
home in Milwaukee, Wi. Unframed and esposed to light and air, it had
deteriorated rapidly. The original background was black but has faded. Genevieve
Sass wanted to be certain it was preserved so had it specially framed.
When Genevieve Sass was moving to a retirement apartment, she asked her
daughter, Ann Ellen Sass Barr, named for Ann Ellen Russell, if she would like to
have the piece. It is very precious due to its provenance and it is my hope that
it will be carefully preserved for our family when I am no longer here to
care for it.
Ann Ellen RUSSELL (1867 - 1927) did needlework throughout her life making
many of the altar cloths for St. Joseph's and then for St. Thomas Aquinas in
Milwaukee after they moved there. Despite 12 children, she was always busy
doing crochet work using the big pocket in her apron to contain her items in
progress.
