The Rafford Family - in Peshtigo (about 1867) and Beyond

This has been an interesting research. I started in Oconto, to Peshtigo, to Marinette, then to Maine, Canada, South Dakota, Washington, Florida - all by computer of course. Okay, except for Oconto, Peshtigo and Marinette - that was by car.  It is still a work in progress.  I'm sure there are mistakes, omissions and people I couldn't find. Any feedback is welcome. I'm always eager to add new relatives.  And thank you to the many people who have given me names and dates and shared family histories.  Janet and Jason

      Generation No. 1

LEWIS RAFFORD was born about 1759 in Pennsylvania, United States, and died 1815 in New Brunswick, Canada.  He married MARY.
LEWIS and MARY RAFFORD had three children (that I can find) - JOHN, EFFIE and MARY. JOHN RAFFORD married OLIVE BECKWITH and together they had twelve children.  One of those children was my great-great-grandfather, James C. Rafford.

JAMES C. RAFFORD was born about 1833 in Aroostook, Maine, United States and died 28 Oct 1862 in Smoketown, Maryland, United States.  JAMES married MARY ANN MORAN on 29 Jun 1855 in Maysville, Aroostook, Maine, United States, daughter of PETER MORAN and CATHARINE GRANT.  MARY ANN was born on 01 Jan 1839 in New Brunswick, Canada, and died on 15 Feb 1909 in Peshtigo, Marinette, Wisconsin, United States.  MARY ANN MORAN married RICHARD MCVANE in Aroostook, Maine, probably around 1864 and he moved with MARY ANN and her children to Peshtigo. He was regarded as their stepfather and took his name. RICHARD MCVANE was born about 1827 in New Brunswick, Canada, the son of MICHAEL MCVANE and MARY LINDSAY. He emigrated to Maine about 1855, and I found him on the 1860 Census in Ashland, Aroostook, Maine, in a boarding house, listed as a laborer. RICAHRD MCVANE died in Peshtigo on 11 Oct 1921, complications of old age.

Notes about RICHARD MCVANE:

Peshtigo Times,
October 20, 1921:

Funeral of Aged Man Held Friday Morning.

The funeral of Dick McVane, a well known and old time resident of this city, whose death occurred early Wednesday morning from the infirmities due to old age, being confined to his bed for several weeks, was held Friday morning from St Mary's church, Rev. Father R.H. MacDonald officiating. The casket bearers were Mayor James Campbell, Frank Zimmerman, Patrick Rossiter, Mark Bice, D.C. Northrup, and Dougal Thompson. Decedent was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, coming to this vicinity in the year 1870. The death of his wife occurred thirteen years ago.  He is survived by one stepdaughter, Mrs. Jessie Brownell and stepson, James, who resides in the south, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as relatives at Lake Noquebay and Oconto. He was nearly 94 years of age and had been in good health until he sustained a fall recently. Burial took place at the old cemetery. The out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Nick Botzau of Grover, the latter being the granddaughter.

Back to the Rafford family,

I discovered Army records from the Civil War that show James Rafford died as a Private in the 16th Maine Infantry on 27 Oct 1862 and is buried in Site 3188, Antietam National Battlefield Site, Sharpsburg Maryland.  A US Army Widows/Orphan card for James C. Rafford lists Mary A. Rafford as his widow; John Rafford as his father and E McVane as minor (guardian).

JAMES RAFFORD and MARY MORAN had six children (I think):

E.A. RAFFORD, born in Presque Isle, Aroostook, Maine, and residing in Marinette married CATHERINE KEIN on October 5, 1878 in Oconto.E.A. Rafford, born: Presque Isle, Maine. He lists his father as James C. Rafford and his mother as Mary A. McVane. Catherine Kein lists her father as Thomas Kein and her mother as Ellen Kein.  Witnesses were Jessie A. McVane and Lucy Dunton. I have found no census records on E.A. or CATHERINE, or her parents.

CHARLES ALLEN RAFFORD was born Apr 1856 in Maysville, Aroostook, Maine, United States, and died in 1907 in Latah, Idaho, United States.  He married ELIZABETH A. THOMPSON on 27 Aug 1881 in Oconto, Oconto, Wisconsin, United States, daughter of NICKALAS CARTER and MARY R. (????).  ELIZABETH was born May 1877 in Michigan, United States. Familiar Face.

The passing of former alderman Harry Engler, 72, is another familiar face that will not be seen again on the streets of Peshtigo. Harry was born in Peshtigo and knew everyone in the city and always had some cheerful remarks to make when he met anyone, including the kids. We at the Times got to know Harry pretty well as he supplied us with a lot of information concerning the old days of Peshtigo and every Thursday he transported our newspapers to the railroad station for the post office department. For his 21 years as a contract mail carrier he never failed to meet the mail trains entering the city. Many times the trains would be hours late but Harry was there to see that the mail left or arrived in Peshtigo safely. Now he has gone to keep his last date...meeting his wife who preceded him in death in 1953.

Peshtigo Times,
