Romantey Peck was from
Connecticut, his wife from New Hampshire. He was a clockmaker, was a resident
for a time of Vermont, and from there moved to New York State, where he engaged
in farming. In 1840, he came to Waukesha county, Wisconsin and made that his
home, dying there in 1857. His wife passed away in New York in 1837.

O. F. PECK, farmer, Sec. 10, P. O. Peshtigo, is a native of Monroe County, New York. In 1840, came to Milwaukee; in 1846, he came to Peshtigo. At this time there were no frame houses in the township. He worked for the Peshtigo Company twenty-four and a half years, locating lands and general outdoor work. He owns a farm of 320 acres with his homestead, 160 acres in another section, and a large tract of unimproved land. This property he has acquired since coming to Peshtigo. During the of 1871, he lost buildings on this farm valued at $2,000. He has been Town Supervisor the past several years.

OSCAR F. PECK, a substantial farmer located in Section 10, Grover township, Marinette county, is a son of ROMANTEY and MARY (DURGIN) PECK, and was born in Monroe County, New York, February 25, 1829.
Romantey PECK was from Connecticut, his wife from New Hampshire. He was a clockmaker, was a resident for a time of Vermont, and from there moved to New York state, where he engaged in farming, In 1840, he came to Waukesha county, Wisconsin and made that his home, dying there in 1837. His wife passed away in New York in 1837. They had eight children, namely; RUFUS C., who came to Waukesha county in 1837 and always made that his home; WINTHROP, who came to Waukesha County, later removed to Iowa, where he died; HAZEN, who lived retired in Elkhorn, Walworth County, Wisconsin; Henry M. living retired at Layton Park, Milwaukee county; Oscar F., subject of this sketch; George T. residing in Grover township; Lucy, wife of MARVIN MUNN, of Bromfield, Hamilton County, Nebraska; and SARAH, who died in Waukesha county. Mr. Peck remarried in Wisconsin.
OSCAR F. PECK was reared in New York State up to the age of eleven and attended school there and in Waukesha county, Wisconsin, whither his father moved in 1840. In Waukesha county he was reared on a farm, beginning life as a farm hand at $4 per month. From there he came to Marinette (or Oconto county in 1845), coming by boat from Milwaukee to Peshtigo, under engagement with the Leavensworth and Clark Lumber Co., which later became the Peshtigo Lumber Co. He was occupied driving an ox-team, locating pine timber and on the drive, and was in the employ of the Peshtigo Co., for twenty-four and one-half years, till after the fire, as foreman of camps, and helped to locate nearly all their pine lands; was also a stockholder in this company. About 1856, Mr. PECK bought his farm in Grover township, comprising 320 acres of timberland, which he had cleared and improved. On October 8, 1871, his two barns, his residence, fences and all the improvements that could be burned were destroyed by the fire. Since then he has built a fine residence and good barns, having settled on the place in April, 1872, the year the township was formed and has since been a continuous resident. Prior to the fire he lived away seventeen and one-half years at Lake Nowelay.
Mr. PECK was united in marriage, in the Peshtigo township, in the fall of 1855, with Miss Tonoce, a native (Menominee Indian) of Wisconsin, and they have had six children, namely; MARY, now Mrs. WILLIAM CONANT; JANE, Mrs. LYMAN CONANT; and JULIA, Mrs. GEORGE NICKERSON, all three residing in Grover township; ROSA, Mrs. JOHN MCGREGOR, of Peshtigo village; EDWARD J., who died October 12, 1895, aged thirty-six years and six months; and Franklin B., who is married and conducts the home farm. The family attend the M.E. Church, of which Mr. PECK is a liberal supporter.
During the early days Mr. PECK
was a great hunter, averaging about one hundred deer during a hunting season,
and even now he enjoys a hunting and fishing trip. He is among the early
pioneers of Marinette county, and the oldest settler in Sugar Bush, Grover
township, which township he assisted in organizing, also building the
schoolhouse, and in other ways aiding in its improvement. He has seen Marinette
grow from a place of but three houses to its present magnitude. Mr. PECK votes
with the Republican party, and cast his first vote for Winfield Scott. For seven
years he served as supervisor of Peshtigo township, has been school treasurer
since 1872, taking great interest in educational matters. Socially he is a
member of Peshtigo Lodge, I.O.O.F., Subordinate Lodge and Encampment, is now
chief patriarch, and has been a member at Peshtigo since 1871. Mr. PECK is and
for years has been a banker among the farmers, loaning money, etc. He is the
architect of his own fortunes and is now the owner of 360 acres of land.

"Mrs. O.F. Peck, one of the oldest pioneer residents of Marinette co., succumbed at the home of her son, Frank Peck of Grover, about 8 o'clock this morning, at the advanced age of 83 years and 11 months. She had enjoyed excellent health until a few months previous to her death. Her death, as nearly as can be learned, will mean the last of the native tribe living on the Peshtigo River. In 1827, Mrs. Peck, then Mrs. Tonocee, was born on the Peshtigo river near what is now the Airline road and the new bridge. She was reared with the natives and recalled of late years in detail stories to her children and grandchildren interesting accounts of their life and their first white neighbors, the builders of the Peshtigo mill.
She was united in marriage to Oscar F. Peck, one of the prominent and wealthy residents of Marinette Co., formerly of the state of New York. The union was blest with six children. The son, Franklin B. Peck, who now owns the old farm in Grover and of whose family she was a member; Edward J. who died on October 12, 1895, and four daughters, Jane, later Mrs. Lyman Conant, now deceased; Julia, now Mrs. George Nickerson of the town of Peshtigo; and Mosa, Mrs. John McGregor. Mr. and Mrs. Peck resided at Lake Noquebay for seventeen years where Mr. Peck was employed by the Peshtigo Lumber Company; managing their large farm there.
They then removed to Grover where a farm of 320 acres was purchased and cleared by Mr. Peck. On October 8, 1871, all of the farm buildings were destroyed by fire. The farm was then occupied, however, by George, a brother. Oscar Peck was a prominent and respected Grover resident, his death in 1899 being the cause of much regret among the residents of Marinette Co., as well as in the town of Grover, for which he had served as supervisor for eleven years. Mrs. Peck was a kind and affectionate old lady and her death, although far from untimely, will be mourned by her numerous friends and relatives. She has made her home with Mrs. and Mrs. Frank Peck for the last several years. The funeral will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family home in Grover, the Rev. L.A. ?? of the Methodist Church officiating.

Grover Young Lady Succumbs at Hospital. Miss Hazel Peck Dies Following Operation for Goitre-Funeral at Harmony on Saturday. The death of Miss Hazel Peck, 18 year old daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Frank Peck, old and highly respected residents of Grover, was reported here yesterday afternoon and came as a shock to the many friends of the family in this vicinity, few of whom had any knowledge of the young lady's serious condition.
Miss Peck had been afflicted with a goitre which was developing alarmingly fast recently and an operation was decided upon as the only chance to save her life. On Tuesday she was taken to St Joseph's Hospital where surgeons removed the growth, and though the outcome was doubtful, as many such operations are, it appeared afterward that the patient had a fair chance for recovery; but with the best of care and under skilful treatment the case terminated fatally at 1:30 yesterday afternoon. The remains were brought to the undertaking rooms of John M. Harper and son to be prepared for burial.
Deceased was born in the town of
Grover on March 3, 1897, and had lived there with her parents all her life.
Among the young folks she was always a favorite and her large circle of friends
are sorely grieved at her loss.
The
funeral will be held next Saturday afternoon with services at the farm home at
one o'clock and at the Harmony M.E. Church at two o'clock, Rev. Geo. A. Tennant
officiating.

Funeral of Miss Hazel Peck. Funeral services for Miss Hazel Peck who died at St. Joseph's hospital at Menominee on Wednesday were conducted by Rev. Geo. A. Tennat at the farm home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Peck, in the town of Grover at one o'clock Saturday afternoon and at the Harmony M.E. church at two o'clock. The casket was borne by Aliston Pepper, Clifford May, Gus Johnson, William Francour, David Francour and George Lippert, the flowers being in charge of the Misses Stella Harper, Lettia Thomas, Mae Thomas, Emma Last, Elsie Jacobson, Emma Kushman, Ida and Hannah Johnson, Fred Sweningson placing their autos at the disposal of the flower girls.
The pastor preached an impressive sermon at the obsequies and the singing was by a choir composed of Mrs. E.D. Ellis, Miss Alice Heidenworth, Mrs. Geo. Heckman and Jon Sanberg, the songs being "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" "Does Jesus Care" and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye."
The remains were laid to rest in the Harmony cemetery.
