Death - Mrs. Lawrence, wife of Dr. Amos Lawrence, died at her home in
Eureka, Wisconsin on Sunday the 17th inst. She had been ailing for some
time past with cancer of the stomach which caused her death at the time

Killed On The Drive.

We regret to learn the sad news of the death of Mr. William Riley

Oconto Times

Obituary

It becomes my sad and melancholy duty to notice the sudden decease of William Riley, an exemplary young man, who came to a premature death under the following circumstances: In December, 1873, he with a large crew of jovial companions, full of buoyancy and hope, repaired to the woods to perform their accustomed labor, namely getting out logs. Here for four months he was the soul and life of the camp until it broke up. He remained for the drive which commenced on the South branch of Main river on the 14th of April last, all going well until the 29th, when in the act of starting a remnant of logs on the roll-away, nine only being left, but being ambitions and determined to leave none, he placed his peevy to the binding log, when with super human effort, the log started, the others following, carrying our dear friend along to the base, where they came in contact with a stump, pitching him forward, a rear log following him in close proximity, bounded from the stump striking him on the back and hip and rolling over him, causing internal injury. He was immediately removed to the camp. Here he suffered for two days, when on the 29th he was conveyed by his two brothers and many faithful comrades to the National Hotel in this city, where the proprietor, Mr. James O’Hare, and Lady administered  to his wants with solicitous care and attention. But alas! All efforts proved unavailing. He lingered up to Saturday morning about five o’clock, when after receiving the rights of his holy religion, his spirit winged its flight to the God that gave it.

Since his arrival in Oconto some few years ago, in truth it may be said, he was an exemplary young man, sober, generous and affable by the citizens, irrespective of creed, on the day of his burial. In truth the procession was solemnly grand. He was a native of the State of New York but for years has resided in Dumbarton, Ontario, Co., Canada West. He leaves a loving mother, two sisters and five brothers to mourn his untimely end.

Sad Accident

We see by the Marinette Eagle that a man by the name of
Ole Johnson was instantly killed at Peshtigo Harbor Thursday evening of last week.

As a train of loaded lumber cars were in motion on the track of Peshtigo
railroad at that place, he under took to jump on to the cars, but missed
his calculation, lost his balance and fell between the cars. Several
passed over him crushing and mangling his body in a fearful manner,
leaving it a shapeless mess. He had not been long in the United States.
He was about 35 years of age and leaves a wife and three children in
Sweden, his native country, to mourn his untimely and shocking death.

Fatal Accident

Thursday night late as William McDowell was proceeding with a load of
supplies for logging purposes on the Little river, because of the
darkness of the night, and rough character of the road, his wagon was
overturned throwing him under the wheels, which passed over his head,
crushing his skull, and causing immediate death. One or two companions
escaped unhurt, and gave every attention to the injured man, whom they
immediately conveyed to his home.
A wife and six fatherless babes were left to mourn his untimely end.

OCONTO COUNTY REPORTER

IN MEMORIUM.-  Mrs. Mary Mott, wife of H.W. Mott departed this life on
Tuesday the 3rd inst. The deceased was a native of New York State, and
has resided in this city for over five years, where she was married some
four years ago to H.W. Mott. Her death was very sudden, and little did
she or her friends think, nut a few short hours before her death, that
she would now be in that "bourn from whence no traveler has ever
returned."
There were but a few in this community, if any who were not surprised
and deeply saddened at the announcement of her death. As she had a
kindly Christian heart, which was developing itself with her growing
years; she was always trying to do good as she had the opportune, and
added, what ever she could to the happiness of her neighbors, friends
and acquaintances, by whom she was honored, respected and loved.
The funeral took place on the following Saturday, when a large concourse
of sympathizing friends accompanied the remains to the Methodist
Episcopal Church where the funeral sermon was preached by the Rev. I.P.
Roberts, after which the sad cortege slowly wound it's way toward the
last resting place of the dead. The funeral was one of the largest ever
witnessed in our city, and the general grief gave proof of how the lost
friend was respected.
She leaves a husband, two children and a large circle of friends to
mourn her loss. The family has the heartfelt sympathies of our citizens.

Fatal Accident
As Wm. McDowell was driving a team, heavily loaded with
lumber, between this city and Little River, he fell from the load in
such a matter as to permit the wheel passing over his neck, killing him
instantly. We understand that intemperance was the cause of the
accident. The deceased leaves a wife and a family of children to mourn
his loss.
