Nels Johnson, 88-year-old father of Mrs. Al Tramble of this city, keeps abreast of what's going on in the state, nation and world today by reading current newpapers and magazines. When the Evening Leader is dropped on the Tamble doorstepeach evening, Mr Johnson site down and reads the entire paper, headlines, stories, comics, editorials, yes, and even the women's page.

Before he retires he reads two or three other daily papers in addition to a magazine or so.

Despite his 88 years, Mr. Johnson is keen and alert. He believes, after reading many sides of the issue, that Harold Stassen has the best chance of becoming the Republican nominee for president. He believes that President Truman has an excellent chance of becoming president once more, and has a lot of respect for the man from Missouri.

LOOKING OUT on the cold winter afternoon, Mr. Johnson said it reminds him of the old days in Oconto county when the winters were hard and cruel, with few luxuries of life.

Mr. Johnson was born in Denmark on February 6, 1860, and came to thiscountry on his 20th birthday, settling in the town of Howe (How), Oconto county.

To begin with, he had nothing more than an axe with which to begin farming. He cleared a piece of land, and a year or so later aquired a team of oxen, and still later, horses.

All in all, Mr. Johnson farmed and logged for more than 55 years in Oconto county, where he also served for many years as a director of the bank at Suring.

HIS WIFE DIED two years ago and since that time he has made his home with Mrs. Tamble, who with her husband, the well known Al, operate Club Al-Ann, just north of the city.

In the Johnson family are six boys,Frank, Walter, and Elmer of Breed, Oconto county; Jim, of Oconto, Frederick of Iron Mountain (MI), and Archie,now of California who formerly operated the Clover Farm store here.

The daughters are, Ann, Mrs. Tamble; Hilda, Mrs. Ed Zingler of Shawano; and Hannah, Mrs. William Fonfarek of Clintonville. There are also 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

On the occasion of his birthday last Thursday, Mrs. Tamble entertained a group of relatives and a few of Mr. Johnson's old time friends.
