John "Jack" Archibald McLean

John "Jack" Archibald McLean emigrated from Bathurst, Gloucester county, New Brunswick, Canada to Oconto. After his arrival, he met Elizabeth "Lizzie" Blanche Morrissey (her mother was an Archibald) from Campbellton, Restigouche county, New Brunswick, Canada & they were married on June 12, 1876 in Oconto. They had 14 children. The 11th & 12th, both named Clifford, died at, or shortly after birth. Jack was a lumberman & farmer.

At the time, Wisconsin & Michigan were the premier spots
in the world for logging. Jack simply transferred his skills from the Miramichi River in New Brunswick to the Oconto.

His first son, and second child, Claude Charles McLean, was to become, perhaps, the most famous logger in the history of the industry. The stories and tales about Claude are legion. Claude heard tales of the tall timber in the West and in 1906, left for Washington and Oregon.

OCONTO COUNTY REPORTER
Claude McLean of Lena, Oconto County, is the Hero.
Mass City, Mich., Oct. 9, 1903.

  Editor Reporter:

Claude McLean, who is cutting cedar at Holt's camp near Mass City, Ontonagon county, Mich., shot a black bear which weighed at least 600 pounds. All the fall this old bruin has been strolling through the woods and making visits to the camp for stray bits of food. Some refuse thrown a short distance from camp attracted him during the day time and he was seen by some of the men. Claude was urged by his companions to go bear hunting, as he could not work to advantage.
Last Wednesday, the 7th instant, he built a scaffold in a tree and at noon settled himself to wait for his prey. With a borrowed repeater and a large supply of patience he sat there from high noon till evening shadows drew about him and still no bear. The camp crew had supper and were settled for the evening smoke when all were aroused by the crack of a gun. A roar of surprise, pain and anger was followed by other shots and more roars till silence was made necessary by the emptiness of the magazine and the death of the bear. Did Claude come down? Yes, but not until some of the boys armed with lanterns and axes went to his assistance.
All were very cautious about approaching but when they drew near Claude slid down and they found the bear quite dead. It was dressed and hauled to camp where he was the center of attraction, while the cooks tried to fill up and thaw out the hunter. The carcass was skinned and the hind quarters taken to town the next day where they were turned over to the Express company to sell in Milwaukee. Each of these weighed a hundred pounds. Considering the front half of the animal, the hide and refuse, 600 pounds is a conservative estimate. He measured 6 feet, 2 inches, nose to tail and 3 feet, 6 inches at the shoulders. Tom McNulty of Oconto has purchased the hide and you may see Tom in a bear skin coat another winter, or hear his wife tell how she got a bear rug that her husband did not shoot. Last but not least, the crew at Camp 5 had a taste of bear meat, and all the bald-headed "lumber jacks" are working to stand in with Claude.

The following article covering the rise of Claude C. McLean was written
by Norman F. Coleman, and published in the Four L. Magazine at
Portland, Oregon. Mr. McLean is the son of the late John A. McLean,
formerly a resident in Oconto Falls, and is the brother of Mrs. Henry
Ryan and Mrs. Frank Hanek, both of whom are residents in this city.
Mr. McLean who left here about eighteen years ago for the west, is
well known to many of our people here and in Lena. The article in
  the Four L. Magazine follows:

There may be some way to induce a logger to talk about himself for publication, but I doubt it.
This story of C. C. McLean, logging superintendent for the Sunset Timber Co., was not told by himself, but was pieced together from snatches of conversation in which his friends have had glimpses of his life's history. Other facts and ex-periences, just as interesting and sig-nificant, may be gleaned by other men in friendly talk during the brief intervals when "Mac" is not preoccu-pied with the main business of his life "getting out the logs." Cooning the Sky-Line The last time I saw him in camp he could not go to a dinner in town because he was "all over grease." When I asked him how this came to be, he made explanation somewhat as follows: "You see, I had been up a spar tree all afternoon.
When I got to camp 12 just after dinner, the main line had parted and left the carriage out on the sky-line and no way to bring it in. The high-climber had left for another camp, by trail through the woods. There was no one else to go up. I put on the spurs and went up a hundred and fifty feet. Then with the strawline hooked to me I had to coon it for a couple of hundred feet out to the carriage. I hadn't gone far when I found the sky-line covered with crude oil and I wasn't very sure of my hand-hold. Several times I looked down and imagined what a splotch I would make in the landscape if I fell, and I wished I was home. But I kept on going. We got the carriage back to the spar tree, spliced the main line, and pretty soon the logs were coming in again. But you see what that sky-line did to my clothes!"

Claude C. McLean
That is McLean, daring, self-reliant, always after the logs, willing and able to tackle almost any job he asks one of his men to do. Born on Stump Ranch He learned these lessons young. One of a family of fourteen children, he was born on a stump ranch near Oconto, Wis., forty six years ago. His father went off each winter to the woods, and each spring worked on the drive. The father and mother were Scotch-Irish people from east-ern Canada. They were hard work-ers and the children walked closely after their example, helped by occasional persuasions of the rod. At twelve, Claude with his younger brother, was doing the spring work. They harnessed the horses, with the older boy on the ground holding the collar up, and the younger on the horse's withers buckling the strap. Or, with their axes, they slashed down, young growth for new clearings. Although "Mac" was not born with an ax in his hand, he came pretty near growing up that way. At fifteen he was holding his own with mature-axemen in the woods. White Water Work A few years later he was "white water man" and was picked for haz-ardous jobs on the spring drives. Mc followed the woods for thirteen years in Wisconsin and Michigan. In the last eighteen years he has worked the woods in British Columbia,

Washington, and Oregon, rising through practically all the logging jobs to his present position as su-perintendent of four camps that get out logs for the Willapa Lumber Co., and the Silver Mill Company. His manner of life is reflected in his bearing. He is tall, broad shoulder-ed, lithe, quick on his feet. Only a few months ago he escaped sudden death because he was quick to jump. When a flying line caught him he was already in the air.
He was hurled thirty feet and temporarily disabled, but he escaped death. A logger who has followed him through the woods says, "McLean walks like a d----m savage." Through thirty years of woods life he has preserved the springy step and easy movement of untrammeled youth. This, and his steady, frank, fearless gaze, makes him seem younger than his years. The family home is in Portland Ore.
Mrs. McLean was an Oconto girl. She and the two sons have in recent years made only occasional visits to

Gyle Harold McLean
camp. Ten year old Gyle is in the grade school, and fourteen year old Clifford is attending Benson Polytechnic. Invented Loading Boom Ten or twelve years ago, when he was working for Frank Pendleton in British Columbia, McLean invented a two stick loading boom, which has made his name widely known in the Northwest logging industry. He is a tireless student of logging methods, and talks machines and rigging endlessly with those who are interested and informed. In fact, a restless ambition to be a top notch logger has marked McLean's career. He has wanted to be up-to-date with his methods, or a little ahead of it.
Leader of Men Years ago one of his former employers aroused my interest in McLean by explaining the high log production of his camps. "The men are not getting out logs for the com-pany" said he, "they are getting them out for 'Mac'." This power of leadership is partly explained by McLean's expertness but more, I think, by his squareness. I have rarely met a man of such sensitive humor. I remember sitting with him in the time keeper's office in camp one evening and hear him give his opinion of the custom of hiring "spotters" to report on men in camp.
Here it is with some necessary omissions. "If I was a --- --- ---crook or a low-lived --- --- --- I might figure that my men were like me and needed to be watch-ed by a spotter. But as long as I figure on treating the men square I want to figure on them treating me square. In most cases," he added, "they live up to my expectations." Thrilling Life Like most loggers McLean has had narrow escapes with his life. I have heard of several of these. The one I recall with greatest pleasure, and with most enlightenment concerning loggers, was told to me by McLean himself, one afternoon on the train going to Willapa Harbor. Here it is from memory: "We had been driving logs down the ......go river and had come, my partner and I, to the foot of Swift water. We were standing together on a log in a deep pool and were [ missing ] us, and I told him to quit. He kept right on rolling the log, and I told him again to quit or I'd put him in the drink. He still kept on and I said, 'Here goes' and pushed the log suddenly out from the branches we were holding by. We both went into the water. I was laughing and went down with my mouth open and my peavey in my hand.
Of course I began to strangle. When I came up, though I saw daylight, I got no air. I had sense enough to drop my peavey and struggle upward again. When I got to the top, the second time, I was pretty far gone, Luckily the foreman with some other members of the crew came along just then in a boat. He grabbed me by the hair, and he and the men hauled me on board the boat and shook the water out of me. If he hadn't happened along just then I probably wouldn't be here telling you the story." The years that have gone by since those river driving days, have brought responsibility and have sobered the high spirits of the youthful logger. At the same time they have developed increasing powers of leadership.
    C. C. McLean now holds in his hands the lives and daily toil of hundreds of men. He must provide for their safety, their continuous labor, their very food and lodging. He makes quick decisions with con-fidence born of long and varied ex-perience. In the camps he acts and speaks as one having authority. But he still has a youthful fondness for hunting and fishing. In conversation his eyes kindle quickly, and he breaks easily into a laugh. He has the liking as well as the respect of those who know him."

The Legend of Claude McLean
by Stewart Holbrook

Thousands of loggers know his name who have never seen him. More thousands do not even know that he lives. It is the penalty one pays for be-coming a legend early in life, and Claude McLean is one of the great legends of the timber. Like Joe Peavey, who almost a century ago devised the modern cantdog and gave it his name, McLean invented the loading boom which for three dec-ades has been hoisting the big fir sticks aboard logging cars and trucks. No other name is so well known in fir country as that of McLean. McLean hasn't yet a grey hair in his sandy thatch, yet a younger-generation logging operator who met him for the first time recently, was surprised and no little disappointed not to see a relic with cane and two-foot beard. "I've heard of McLean all my life," he said, "and he just can't be this young." Yet, there he was, beardless, caneless--lean and tall and straight, running the woods for Cobbs & Mitchell at Valsetz, Oregon, high in the Coast Range. Born in the rambunctious old logging town of Oconto, Wisconsin, McLean naturally took to the woods. At fourteen he had the lonely job of riding a sprinkling sled from midnight to dawn, playing water upon the road to freeze instantly and make fine sledding for the sleighs of white pine, the* while a cold Wisconsin moon lighted the way and owls gave mournful voice. At sixteen, peavey in hand, he was coming down with the drive. Young McLean walked up and down and across the Lake States on the heaving logs of a score of streams, all of them swift-moving highways that proved only too swift for many a red-shirted lad. Mac survived, though his joints fifty years later often remind him of the cold waters of the Oconto, the Pine, the Pike, and the Menominee, fabulous streams all. In 1906, for no particular reason, McLean packed his turkey and took a train of steam cars for Puget Sound. He went to loading logs, then working in the rigging, and presently was tending hook. A year later he was a side push. By 1912 he was a full-fledged bull of the woods, an occupa-tion he has followed ever since. Meanwhile, McLean brooded over what seemed to him to be the lagging technique of loading fir logs. After a year of experiment he patented in 1917 the McLean Boom. Two years later, as I know from personal observation, the McLean Boom had spread to camps throughout British Columbia, into Washington and Oregon, even to Humboldt Bay. For this contribution McLean received almost nothing in cash--all of which is in the best tradition of inventors. But it did make his name secure in logging history, and seems also to have made him a bearded legend, almost a myth, the veritable Old Nestor of the timber. He'll never be able to live it down.

Many a McLean loading boom now operating in the big-fir country is rigged with Bethlehem Purple Strand Wire Rope. Purple Strand is made of improved plow steel, in sizes and con-structions suitable for all timber-handling.

Soon the other boys, Allen, Gordon, and Ellis followed. Allen and Gordon later died as the result of logging accidents. But one of boys, knew that logging was a hard and dangerous business, and decided on a different career.

Neil Harry McLean

That lad was Neil Harry McLean, my father. Somehow, he got from the backwoods of Spruce to Milwaukee and on April 29, 1910, enlisted in the United States Navy as a Hospital Apprentice. Thirty-six years later he retired as a Lieutenant Commander, having achieved this rank with only two years of high schooling from Oconto Falls High School. Neil and my mother, Catherine, rest in Arlington National Cemetery, Fort Myers, Arlington, Virginia.

"Aggie" had seven children. Her third,  Thomas James McNulty, Jr., died from a logging accident up in Townsend Township. Generations of McNulty's lie in Oconto Catholic cemetery.

Mary Jane married Henry Patrick Ryan and set up housekeeping in Oconto Falls. "Paddy's" father, Daniel

Patrick had moved his clan from Brown county to Oconto county. "Mae's" children eventually spread elsewhere, mostly to Milwaukee, but Henry and his children, Henry Miner, Hazel, Edwin, and Doloris rest in Saint Anthony's, Oconto Falls.

Eva Maude, who was always Maude and never Eva, married Francis John Hanek. "Frank's" family had come to Oconto county from Bohemia, via Manitowoc county. As they grew up, most of Maude's children moved to Madison, and Maude followed, living to the age of 101. Maude's husband, Frank and their daughter, Gwendolyn, are also buried in Saint Anthony's.

Ida Arlene went to work as a compositor for the Oconto County Times Herald, but at the tender age of 22, died of appendicitis in her room at the Hotel Schrubbe in Oconto Falls. She rests in Saint Charles Catholic cemetery, Lena.
Gertrude Mary McLean

With advancing age and their children gone, Jack and Lizzie found it increasing difficult to run a "stump farm" in Spruce and so, in 1911, took a trip to visit their sons in Monroe, Snohomish county, Washington. His return to Oconto caused enough of a stir, that the Oconto Reporter wrote a humorous article about it. But the burden of age caused them to return to Monroe, permanently. Their time there was short, less than five years. They died within three months of each other and lie buried in the small I.O.O.F. cemetery in Monroe, Washington.

John McLean passed through here with his wife this week on his way home to Spruce from the Pacific coast where he spent several weeks. A friend of John's who saw him get off the train at Oconto says that the first thing he did was to kneel down in reverential attitude upon the depot platform and offer up the following prayer: "I thank the Lord that I am back to Oconto and on my way to Spruce in God's country where I can hear the song of the robins and the thrushes, where the grass grows as green as the lovely shamrock of the Emerald Isle, where gentle zephyrs sway the beautiful foliage of the stately elms and the queenly maples, where the sparkling waters of the numerous tributaries of the glorious Oconto river sing their rolicking* and boisterous songs all day long, where the sweet drops of dew linger on the grass and flowers and shrubbery in the golden-purple morning sunshine like gems of purest ray serene, where the life-giving ozone is scented with the delightful aroma of the odoriferous trailing arbutus and where the bees and the multifarious hued butterflies sip the sweet secretion of the honey-suckle, and I promise Thee, O Lord, that if you will forgive me this time I will never so long as there grows one spear of green grass in Oconto county and so long as there is the breath of life in my body, roam to that mist-en-veloped and inhospitable land of the Hindoo, the Japs and the Chinese and every morning from now on I will offer up this prayer of thanks upon my bended knees." By the time that Jack had thus delivered himself he had attracted quite a crowd and his wife had to interrupt his fervent prayer and hurry him away.
