.Obituary of Michael Makos:

Michael Makos, 80, former Oconto area resident, died Thursday in a Milwaukee hospi-tal after a long illness.

Mr. Makos was born Jan. 1, 1884, in Hungary and came to the United States at the age of 18 years. He lived in St. Louis for a time and then moved to Racine where he worked in a foundry. He then moved to Suring where he engaged in farming. Later he farmed in the Oconto area and then moved to the Town of Brazeau where he farmed until 1951. He moved to Milwaukee in 1956 after his retirement.

On May 18, 1904, he married the former Mary Sandor in St. Louis, Mo. She died in 1943.

Surviving are seven sons Steve, William and Peter of Green Bay, Michael of Argyle, Joseph, Louis and Julius of Milwaukee; five daughters, Mrs. Howard Robbins and Mrs. Arthur Lentz of Milwaukee, Mrs. Ralph Sternard of Fontana, Calif., Mrs. James Blish and Mrs. Gerald Parsons of Green Bay, 36 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m., in the Rhodes funeral home, at Cole-man. The Rev. Byron Belanger of St. John’s Church at Coleman will officiate. Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery.

Obituary for Mary Sandor Makos:

A requiem mass was sung by the Rev. Leo Przkbylski, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Klondike, for Mrs. Michael Makos, 58, who passed away at her home near there, Tuesday evening following an illness of several months duration. The Steffen Mortuary at Lena was in charge and interment was made in the Church cemetery at Klondike.
The deceased was born in Hungary in 1885, and came to this Country when she was twelve years old. She was united in marriage to Michael Makos, at St. Louis, Mo., 37 years ago. They made their home there until coming here 12 years ago.

Survivors are her husband; five daughters, Mrs. Howard Robbins, Milwaukee; Mrs.. Karl Weber, Sturgeon Bay; Alice, EIsa, and Viola at home; seven sons, Stephen, Green Bay; Joseph, Milwaukee; Michael, Jr., Argyle; Louis, and Peter, at home; Cpl. Julius, serving with the Medical Corps in North Africa; and William, second class petty officer in the U. S. Coast Guards, at Chicago.. Three brothers, Julius Sandor, St. Louis, Mo., Joseph, Milwaukee; and Louis, Oconto Falls, Route 1; and two sisters, Mrs. Theresa Hurzath and Anna Sandor of Hungary, also survive. There are also seven grandchildren.

The first census the Makos Family is found on was in 1910, St. Louis, MO.  Head of household, Michael Muckwus (sic, Makos) was age 27 years and was born in Hungary, speaking Magyar.  He is listed as speaking magyar (native Hungarian) and worked as a Molder in a Stove Factory.  He immigrated in 1900. Wife Mary was age 25 and had been married 3 years. She and both her parents were Magyar and born in Hungary. She immigrated to America in 1906. There were two sons in the household, both born in MO. Stephen was age 2 years and Joseph had not yet reached one month old. Mary is listed as having 2 births with both children living in 1910.

By 1920 the Mike Makos Family was living in city of Oconto, Wisconsin. Added to the family since that move was daughter Irene, born in Oconto County February 2, 1913 (passing away October 11, 2007), son Louie and daughter Helen. Older sons Joseph and Mike had been born while the family lived in Missouri. Mike Makos, senior, age 35, was listed as having entered the U.S. in 1900 and his wife Mary, age 34, immigrated in 1905. Both had been born in Hungary, as were their parents.
