Lucas Robison
James Lucas was born in about 1826 in Canada his father
was born in Ireland and his mother was born in
Scotland. He married Catherine, she was born
Ireland, so were both her parents.
From the dates in Census records, we believe James
and John Lucas and families
(relatives-maybe brothers?) came from Ontario, Canada
in 1857 and settled in Lena/Stiles area,
WI. James and Catherine came to WI with children;
Margaret in 1854 and Alexander born 1856
in Canada, after moving to Stiles they had Catherine
in 1858, Robert in 1861, Ann in 1863,
James in 1865. James logged and farmed, with
John Lucas Family living next door.
James Lucas received a U.S. Land Grant on March
5, 1874, of 80 acres in Township 29
(Oconto CO), from Ulysses S. Grant.
Some interesting facts from James Lucas Family:
"TOWN of LENA- The first families to settle in the
area were French descendants of early traders
and pioneers... They lived in the vicinity of what
was then "Jones Creek" further up the river
from Lena, and a place later known as "Grays's Bridge"
on Little River around 1877. Family
Surnames included LUCAS, Vallier or Valley, Niquette,
Payant, and Rosera."

FOURTEEN years ago (1882 less 14 yrs. is 1868), James
Lucas in the town of Little River, it
then being an unbroken wilderness. Since that
time, he has cleared one hundred and thirty
acres which he has under a high state of cultivation.
At the time he located there was neither
roads nor schools in the township, but now there are
good roads and five school houses between
the Little River bridge and Kelley Brook, and the
township is well settled with a hardy,
enterprising and thrifty class of people. There is
considerable good land still remaining in the
township that can be bought at reasonable figures,
which will certainly appreciate in value, as
soon as the new railroad is constructed and now is
the time to purchase not only in Little river,
but throughout the county."

** IT IS intimated that the railroad is about to change
the name of its station now known as
Maple Valley to Lucasville. That is as it should
be. James Lucas was one of the first, if not
the first, settler in that part of the county, built
the first road to Maple Valley, a distance of
some twelve miles, and one of four miles to Leighton,
and has done much for the prosperity and
development of Little River Township, and the honor
of having a station named for him would be
about the right thing."
James Lucas died on Feb 18, 1887 at 65 years old of
a tumor or abscess. He is buried at
Evergreen Cemetery in Oconto, WI. No obituary
has been found as yet.
