The French speanking Belgium born LeComte Family living in Oconto County can be traced back to the 1860 federal census when brothers Antone and [Peter] Joseph LeComte were living in the boarding house of the Oconto Lumbering Company and working in the Oconto mill. Their sister Antoinette Lecomte had been married 1858 in Oconto County and was living in city of Oconto with her husband John B. Wauterbrook. Each had immigrated at separate times with Peter Joseph found in 1855 coming through the Port of New York only days after the opening of the new Castle Gardens immigration facility. Antoinette would follow at the same port in 1857. Antoine arrived sometime before 1860. Thdeir parents were Pierre François LeComte and Marie-Thérèse Josèphe Beaufaux both of Belgium.

The single brothers worked in the lumber industry and served in the U.S. Army of the Republic during the Civil War, shortly after arriving from their original homeland. Upon their return from the war, Joseph LeComte lived with his wife, Maria Alphonsia Reynier
(also Alphonsine Renier and Reignier), whom he had married in 1861 and they had a daughter, Marie (Elizabeth) born in Oconto in 1863. After the war, in 1866, a son Gustave was born in neighboring Brown County, Wisconsin, where Maria had settled with her family after immigrating from Belgium in 1855. Joseph is believed to have died there very near the time of his son's birth. Antoine remained single in Oconto until 1882 when he married and started a family.

The Oconto LeComtes had a brother, Jean Nicholas LeComte, who had remained in Belgium. Jean Nicholas had married Catherine Virginie Paques and three of that couple's offspring immigrated to Oconto County in 1881 from Belgium. Camille, Adelin and Gustave Joseph LeComte each married and also raised families in Oconto County.

The Oconto surnames of LeComte Family spouses include: Wauterbrook, LeComte, Mineau, Tilley, Johnson, Renier, Picard, Schultz, Hoffman,
Weisgerber, VanGaal, Loose, Peterson, Kinziger, Suderberg, Frederick, Vanderfin, Aubry, Whitaker, Trepanier and Belongia.

FORMER FALLS MAYOR ROLAND LECOMTE
DIES PEACEFULLY ON WEDNESDAY EVENING

Oconto Falls - Funeral rites for Roland B. LeComte, former mayor of the city of Oconto Falls will be held Saturday morning at St. Anthony's Catholic church. The requiem mass will be intoned at ten thirty o'clock and interment will take place in the Catholic Cemetery at Oconto.

Mr. LeComte had operated a barber shop in the hotel building for about 28 years. His failing health caused his retirement some months ago. Always interested in civic affairs, he became alderman of the Third ward, and filled this official position for eight years. In 1948 he became mayor of Oconto Falls and his administration was marked with much improvement and progress.

In addition to his interest in city affairs, Mr. LeComte was active in the Business Men's Association and the Junior Association of Commerce. He was active in the Holy Name Society of St. Anthony's congregation and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was born in Oconto on November 29, 1903 where he grew to manhood. After establishing his business in Oconto Falls, he was married to Miss Mildred Belongia of Oconto on November 30, 1929, who survives. He is further survived by two daughters, Margaret, Mrs. Ralph Vanden Bush of Oconto Falls and Miss Mary LeComte at home, grandchildren, Cynthia and Richard Vanden Bush and a sister Mrs. George Aubry of Oconto.

The remains are resting at the Soulek Funeral Home and will be in state after six on Thursday evening. The parish rosary will be recited at eight on Friday evening, with the Knights of Columbus conducting their service at nine.

Deep sympathy is extended to the bereaved family and their loss is keenly felt throughout the community. The contributions Roland LeComte made in the city and his service to his church will live on. Even though his passing seems untimely, God in His Infinite Wisdom will not lose sight of the sterling qualities of this neighbor and friend of many.
