OCONTO COUNTY

FAMILIES and BIOGRAPHIES
.JOHNSON.

Both Johnson and Hougaard families lived in Oconto County in the late 1800s early 1900s. I believe they lived in Maple Valley and Surring areas. Both were farmers. Both participated in the building of a Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church (now Trinity Lutheran in Surring I believe). Family lore has it that the first marriage at the church was on June 4, 1901 between Hemming Christian Richard Johnson and Inga Marie Hougaard (also known as Mary).
Johnson Family:
Hemming’s father was James Johnson.
He and his wife came from Denmark.
Hemming Johnson was born in Oconto County sometime in the late 1870’s (he is listed as being married at the age of 23).
Both James and his wife are buried in Oconto County.
Hemming and his family moved away from Oconto County sometime before
1910 to North Dakota.
I believe their oldest two children were born in Oconto County; Dagne (f) and Richard (m)
