The Jarvey/Gervais family had been in North America for more than 200 years when young Michael Jarvey of Little Suamico signed up as a volunteer for the Civil War. The Fourth Wisconsin Infantry was named the "Oconto River Drivers" since the men who formed it were employed in the dangerous Spring log drives to the mills on the lower Oconto River. Although initially an infantry unit, it was changed to cavalry mid way through the long and bloody years of war. He had left his wife and young children behind to fight in a war that originally was supposed to "be over in a few months". It lasted from 1861 into 1865, with troops needed after the fighting was over for reformation of the South. Coming back in 1866, Michael and his family farmed in Little Suamico. His children married and also farmed in Pensaukee. It has become a large extended family.

Old Resident Dies
Joseph Jarvey, an old time resident of Abrams,
passed away at the home of his daughter in Chicago, Saturday, April 20,
having spent the winter there. The remains were brought to Abrams Sunday
and funeral services were held at the Stiles Catholic church and interment
was in the Stiles cemetery. He was 86 years of age and is survived by a
large family.

Henry Jarvey, who had been battling with that
fatal disease, consumption (Tuberculosis), for the past five months, died
last Friday evening shortly after ten o’clock. Deceased was born in Stiles
in 1853. And was about 38 years old at the time of his death, and has resided
here continually for the past 15 years. He was an honest and industrial
man, a kindhearted parent and devoted husband. His untimely taking off
is a severe blow to his wife and eight children who survive him. The funeral
was held from St. Patrick’s church last Sunday afternoon and was largely
attended. The
internment was at the Catholic cemetery.

Dan Ryan and Henry Jarvey are happy. During the
past week each had his family increased, Dan being presented with a boy,
while Henry, by the way of variety, was presented with a girl. All are
doing well.

KILLED AT STILES.--On Thursday of this week Peter
JARVEY was killed at one of Eldred¹s logging camps, one and a half
miles above Stiles. We learn that he was loading a load of logs and
becoming impatient, jumped on the load and threw his weight on the chain
by which a log was being drawn up. The team feeling the extra weight
threw itself into its work with increased vigor.
JARVEY being unprepared for
this lost his footing and was caught between the side of the load and the
ascending log and was crushed between them. The deceased was a young
man raised on the river, and was a brother to Mike JARVEY who was killed
by the Cars in Fort Howard a few years ago.
