FAMILIES and BIOGRAPHIES

This material was entered for historical reasons and to try and tie together the Maine connection of the early settlers of Oconto County.

Robert and Ellen moved from Maine to St. George New Brunswick, Canada. They were loyalist during the time of the revolutionary war, many of whom moved to Canada during and after the revolution. Some of their descendants played a role in the early development of the county and city of Oconto.

Their daughter Elizabeth returned to Maine for at least part of her adult life where her younger children were born before finally settling in what became the city of Oconto. Elizabeth's sons Thomas Millidge and William Brunquest were among the early inhabitants in the area arriving 1849/1850. Followed by Elizabeth with their younger siblings by 1855. Elizabeth's sisters Arabella married to Paul McDonald, which McDonald street in Oconto is named after and Charolette married to Michael Pauley are the remaining known relatives to have come to the area.

Elizabeth's son Thomas married Lovina Lindsay, daughter of Thomas Lindsey and her daughter Charolette married George Smith who became the fist mayor of the city of Oconto.

Yes, descendants of Robert and Emma played a roll in the early history of the city of Oconto as documented in records and written history.

             iii.   Arabella "Anna" HIBBARD was born Hallifax, N.S. 7 Mar. 1806. Arabella died 25 Jan. 1879 in Oconto, WI., at 72 years of age.

Mrs. Paul McDonald, whose serious and prolonged illness we noticed fast week, was relieved from her sufferings, by death on Friday evening of last week. On Thursday afternoon she had fallen into a deep sleep, from which she did not again awaken. At seven fifty o'clock, Friday evening, she stopped breathing, without a struggle, and was no more.

Her malady was a peculiar one, something akin to a cancer on the side of her face. Though indications of some affection in her face had been apparent, at times, all her life, yet the first painful evidence of its serious nature had appeared only about three years ago, when spending a winter in Delaware. In its later development, it was a most painful disease, and her death came as sweet relief.

Mrs. Arabella McDonald, whose maiden name was Hibbard, was born at Halifax, N. S., on the 7th day of March, 1806, and was therefore, not quite 73 years of age. She was united in marriage to Paul McDonald, Esq., about the year 1836, and with him emigrated to Wisconsin, and arrived at Oconto in January, 1853, where she has since made her home. She was, thus, one of the earliest residents of this community and witnessed its progress from its earliest beginning to the present. With pleasant home surroundings and associations, she was in a position to enjoy life for many years, had not this painful disease insinuated itself into her life.

Two sisters, Mrs. Barnard and Mrs. Pauley, who reside here, and a brother, who resides in New Brunswick are,, we believe, the only surviving members of her father's family. She married Paul MCDONALD St. George, New Brunswick, CN., 10 July 1834. Source NB marriage records. Both bride & groom living in St. George.

Paul was born New Brunswick, CN. 21 Jan. 1805. Paul was the son of (?) MCDONALD. Paul died 2 July 1888 in Oconto, WI, at 83 years of age. Both buried Evergreen Cemetery in Lot. 11, Block 7. Dates from gs.
Paul had a company named McDonald & Billings had a sawmill on the Oconto River at one time. He also was involved in the lumber industry with his brother-in-law William Brunquest.

On 1880 census Paul is living with Wm. Younger and his wife Ellen Hibbard, a niece.

In, 1870 Paul age, 65 is a laborer, and Arabella is age 64, keeping house in the south ward of the city of Oconto. They have $5,000 in assets plus $8,000 in personal property on the U.S. census.

"Mrs. Arabella McDonald, wife of Paul McDonald after whom McDonald Street was named, was connected with a lumber company that operated at Oconto in its pioneer days. She also purchased and sold considerable property in the city. She, with Mrs. Thomas Lindsey, Mrs. Richard Berry and Mrs. William Brunquest, were considered the first four pioneer women from the East to settle at Oconto."
Arabell & Paul evidently had no children who reached adulthood. In her will executed in 1878 she left her household furniture, carriage silverware and apparel to her niece Ellen E. Hibbard Young and to her gr. niece, Ellen's daughter, Arabella she left her jewelry. Her husband and Ellen's husband William were executors of the will.
Francis HIBBARD was born Hallifax, N.S. 1811. Francis died 3 8 Nov. 1880 St. George, New Brunswick, CN., at 69 years of age. He married twice.
He married Clarissa CHRISTOPER St. George, New Brunswick, CN., 25 May 1837. Angelican Marriage records, witnesses Louis B. Messinett and G. W. Gilmo, Rector Samuel Thomson.

He married Urania GILLMOR circa 1843. Urania was the daughter of Daniel GILLMOR and Pamelia DOWDLE.

In an Act incorporating the Victoria Red Granite Company of St. George, 1874 Francis Hibbard, M.P.P. is listed as a stockholder. Francis was a member of Legislative Council.

2. Elizabeth L.2 HILLARD-MILLEDGE-BRUNQUEST-BARNARD (Robert1 HIBBARD) was born New Brunswick, CN. 1799. Both parents born in Maine. 1880 US Census Oconto County. Elizabeth died 4 March 1882 in Oconto, WT., at 82 years of age.

MRS. BARNARD, mother of Thomas Millidge, William Brunquest, Mrs. William Adams and the late Mrs. George Smith, died Friday night and was buried Sunday, the service being held at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. William Adams, the funeral sermon being preached by the Rev. S. Reynolds. The deceased lady had resided here many years and was well thought of by all.

Elizabeth is shown in 1860 .Oconto census living in Oconto. Elizabeth was obviously married three times, but the names of her husbands is not known at this time.

From 1869 newspaper article of Green Bay Press Gazette. Regarding development of Oconto. On the 1870 U.S. census Eliza is age 71, living by herself in the south ward of the city of Oconto.

3. Charolette2 HIBBARD (Robert1) was born New Brunswick, CN. 1802. Parents names from records recorded in New Brunswick Archieves. Charolette died 1 June 1879 in Oconto, WI, at 76 years of age. Cause of death old age.

She married Michael PAULEY in New Brunswick, CN. Michael was born in Germany 1785. Michael died 19 Feb. 1858 in Oconto, WI., at 72 years of age. Both buried Evergreen Cemetery, Oconto in Lot. 16 Block 6. Cause of death stroke. Named spelled Pauly on records.

By the time of the 1870 U.S. census Charolette is age 69, keeping house for herself living in the south ward of the city of Oconto, parents born Maine.

4. Thomas3 MILLEDGE (Elizabeth L.2 HILLARD-MILLEDGE-BRUNQUEST-BARNARD , Robert1 HIBBARD) was born St. George, New Brunswick, CN. 24 June 1827. Thomas died Dec. 1895 in Oconto, WI., at 68 years of age. Oconto County Reporter, 6 December 1895

The funeral of the late Thomas Millidge was largely attended on Monday morning from the family residence on Main street, the services conducted by Rev. C. R. Burdick, and the following friends of many years officiating as pallbearers: H. M. Royce, Gregor Roth, N. L. McCauslin, Ernest Funke, George Beyer and Henry Sargent.

The singing was furnished by a ladies quartet consisting of Mrs. William Watson, Mrs. Hitchcock, Miss Peck, Marinette, and Miss Minnie McDonald, Green Bay, with Mrs. James Watson, Marinette, accompanist. Others from away were Mr, and Mrs. Frank Page, Mrs. Henry Vandenberg, Mrs. Reinboldt, Jefferson Lindsay, Marinette; Mr. and Mrs. Wm.,Brunquest and son, Menominee; Mr. and Mrs. Lorenzo Colson, Mill Center; Hugh McDonald, Green Bay.

He married Lovina LINDSEY. Lovina was born in Maine 1830. Lovina was the daughter of Thomas LINDSEY and Lucy L. FIFIELD. Lovina died 8 Aug. 1910 in Oconto, WI., at 80 years of age. Buried Evergreen Cemetery Lot. 6, Block 7. Cause of death general senility. Obituary from Marinette Eagle Star, Aug. 10, 1910, page 1.

Oconto Enterprise: Mrs. Lavina Millidge, aged 80 years, 9 months and 22 days, died at her home at 1131 Main Street yesterday. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon from the Christian Science church Mrs. Millidge was the mother of Ed Millidge a prominent business man of this city and she had resided here many years.

Descendent was an aunt of Mrs. Henry Vandenberg and Mrs. Martin Ratchford of this city. The ladies went to Oconto to attend the funeral.

" When Mrs. Eddy was in Chicago in 1884 to teach a class, several women from Oconto went to take instruction, including Mrs. McDonald, Mrs. Sergeant, Mrs. Lovina Milledge, and Miss Elizabeth Beyer. Upon returning to Oconto, Mrs. Milledge opened her home to the students of Christian Science and for Sunday worship. The group grew steadily through healings and it was decided that a church should be built. Mrs. Eddy gave her permission, and Mrs. Victorian Sergeant accepted donations. Many who were not Christian Scientists gave funds, as Oconto was then a hard lumbering town and it was thought another church would be a good influence."

Mrs. Almeda Pendleton and daughter, Mrs. Nettie Sheridan, returned to their home in Everett, Wash., Tuesday after a visit in the city with the former's sister, Mrs. Lovena Millidge.

THOMAS MILLIDGE, dealer in general merchandise, Oconto, was born Jan. 24, 1828, in New Brunswick. In 1849 he came to Oconto; worked by the month at lumbering, afterward jobbing in logs. In 1856 he opened a general merchandise store, commencing with a very small stock, now doing a business of about $20,000 a year. He has been President of the Village Board. Has been Deputy Postmaster. Agent for steamers, and member of the Board of Supervisors .

Thomas in shown on the 1852 Property Tax Assessment owing Lot 1, T28N, R22E, in Section 19, valued at $150 and consisting of 67 acres. In deed records of Oconto County on 13 Aug. 1853 he sold to School District 2, for $1, a quarter acre lot which was part of lot 27 located on the Oconto River T28N, R22E, possibly section 19 and 20.

On Apr. 3, 1854 he sold to Samuel B. Guilkey for $40.00 land on the bank of the Oconto River, 17 ft. east of line between lots 1 and 2 section 19, T. 28N, R22E, running north 165 ft, the east 92 feet then north 165 feet to bank of Oconto river. Then west to bank of river to the place of beginning, Samuel is from Maine. In 1854 he built a mill on this site.

Thomas and his brother Wm. Brunquest opened a store in Oconto. They evidentially went their separate ways with both having their own businesses. His brother Wm. was living in Menominee at the time of Thomas's death.

Enumerated on 1880 U.S. census in city of Oconto age 52, born New Brunswick as where parents; wife Lovina age 50, with son Edward age 19 and one servant Mary Marks age 36 born New Brunswick.

On April 30, 1881 the Oconto County Reporter carried the following newspaper article. Millidge's store was burglarized on Tuesday night of between two and three hundred dollars worth of jewelry and a small sum of money.

        ii.   Ella MILLEDGE was born in Oconto, WI. July 1857. Ella died 27 Aug. 1857 in Oconto, WI., at
less than one year of age.
        iii.   Abby Lucy MILLEDGE was born in Oconto, WI. 9 Mar. 1859. Abby died 20 Jan. 1879 in Oconto, WI, at 19 years of age.

It is our painful duty, this week, to record the sudden death of Miss Abbie Millidge, which occurred at the home of her father, Thomas Millidge Esq., at about four o'clock Sunday morning last. Never of very robust health, she had been inclined, of late years, to consumption, and latterly had suffered several attacks of hemorrhage of the lungs, which, finally, was the cause of her death.

Her condition had seemed so favorable, the past few months, and she had been enjoying so good a degree of health, since her return from California, apparently gaining strength daily, and this too at mid-winter, had led her family and their many friends to hope and to think that she would, yet, enjoy many years of life. Only the day before, (Saturday) she, in company with her grandmother, had made a number of calls, walking, taking dinner at Mrs. Snover's on the south side of the river, and returning home at the approach of evening, feeling in very good spirits, and apparently as strong as she had been for many a day. She retired at her usual hour.

At about four o'clock A. M., she coughed slightly, and the hemorrhage commenced. Although not severe, yet in less than fifteen minutes, she quietly passed away, her father and mother supporting her. All that loving hearts could suggest and hands perform, was of no avail.

Abbie L. Millidge was born in Oconto, March 9, 1859, and was, therefore not quite 20 years of age. She was the only surviving daughter of Thomas and Levina Millidge, who were among the earliest settlers of this section and of our most respected citizens. She was thus, truly an Oconto girl, having passed all her life among us. Of an unusually light hearted and amiable disposition, she numbered all of her many acquaintances as friends, every one of whom feel a personal loss in her death.
In the fall of 1877 she visited the Pacific coast for the benefits of that climate and was rapidly gaining in health, when suddenly hemorrhage of the lungs set in which carried her very near the gates of death.

However, in spite of the prediction of physicians to the contrary, she rallied enough to be brought home early in the summer. Since the close of the hot season, she had improved daily, though slowly, and had been in the habit of riding or walking out every fair day, including the last day of her life. This being the case, the sudden news of her death on Sunday morning caused quite a shock to the community every member of which sympathize deeply with the stricken family.
The funeral took place from the family residence on Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Mr. Burdick officiating. The large attendance of people, including quite a number from the country testified to the wide-spread sympathy and general sorrow.

Miss Abbie Millidge returned home from Ishpeming on Wednesday last, where she has been sojourning for some time past for her health.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul McDonald, accompanied by Miss Abbie Millidge, expect to start on the 19th for the Pacific coast where they will spend the winter in the mild climate of California,

iv. Thomas Edward MILLEDGE was born in Wisconsin 1862. Based on 1910 U.S. census. Known as Edward. Thomas died 18 Aug. 1933 in Oconto, WI, at 71 years of age. Buried in same plot as the rest of the family in Evergreen Cemetery, Lot 6, Block 7.

Shortly after midnight Thursday, August 17, Thomas Edmund Millidge (sic), 71, lifelong resident of Oconto, passed away at his home on Congress street, after a few days illness.

Born February 28, 1862, Mr. Millidge(sic) spent his entire life in the city of Oconto. In his youth he was employed by his father who ran the first store here, and owned considerable portion of the land on which the city is now located. On the death of his father, Mr. Millidge (sic) carried on the business in which he remained for 40 years.

In November 1925, Mr Millidge (sic) sold his store, and since that time has lived a life of retirement.

Funeral services were held at his home Sunday afternoon with Mr. F. J Bartels, Abrams, first read in the Christian Science church, officiating.
Pallbearers included Leslie Harvey, Dr. R. H. English, Donald MacQueen, C. W. Carlson, Ray Whitney and Fred Wright.

Mr. and Mrs Arthur J. Roper, Oshkosh; Mr. and Mrs. John Ryland and son of Madison; Mrs. S. J. Murphy, Chicago; and Mrs. J. S. Ritchie, and a host of friends from DePere and Green Bay were among the out-of-town people present at the ceremonies. He married Lillian MCCLURE in Wisconsin, 1913.

Lillian was born in Michigan 1861. Lillian died 8 Aug. 1948 in Seattle, Washington, at 87 years of age. Buried Evergreen Cemetery, Lot 6, Block 7. Age at death 87 years. Obit appeared in the:

Funeral services will be held on the family lot in the Evergreen cemetery Friday afternoon at 1:30 for Mrs. Lillian Millidge (sic), whose cremated remains arrived here Monday. Mrs. Millidge (sic) died in Seattle, Washington last week. Rev. Gideon Krein will officiate at the services. Mrs. Millidge had been a member of the Oconto Presbyterian church until leaving here 15 years ago.

Survivors are two sisters, Miss Carrie McClure and Mrs. Ell Knolles of Seattle and one brother Nathan McClure of Iron Mountain.
On August 10 services were held at the Johnson and Hamilton Chapel at Seattle.

        v.   Arthur Howard MILLEDGE was born in Oconto, WI. Nov. 1867. Arthur died 27 July 1868 in Oconto, WI, at less than one year of age. Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Lot 6, Block 7.
        vi.   Irvine MILLEDGE was born in Oconto, WI Sept. 1871. Irvine died 4 Nov. 1871 in Oconto, WI, at less than one year of age. Buried Evergreen Cemetery,
        vii.   William B. MILLEDGE was born In Oconto, WI Nov. 1871. William died 4 Sept, 1872 in Oconto, WI, at less than one year of age. Sept. 4,1872- William B., infant son of Thomas and   L. MILLIDGE aged 11 months. Buried Evergreen Cemetery.

5. William3 BRUNQUEST (Elizabeth L.2 HILLARD-MILLEDGE-BRUNQUEST-BARNARD , Robert1 HIBBARD) was born New Brunswick, CN. 1828.

He married twice. He married Mary Ellen MESSENETT. Mary was born 1831. Mary died 22 Mar. 1853 in Oconto County, Wisconsin, at 21 years of age. Buried Evergreen Cemetery.

He married Julia HANSCOM. Julia was born in Maine 1845. Julia was the daughter of Charles HANSCOM.

Listed on 1852 Property Tax Assessment rolls as resident landowner of Lot 2, Sec. 19, T28N. R22E also SW1/4 of SW1/4 of Sec 29 T28 N, R21E.

Listed on 1880 U.S. census living in city of Oconto with his wife age 35, and two sons Frank, age 14, and Wm. age 10.

Oconto County was formed in February, 1851, and attached to Brown for judicial purposes, being organized in April, 1852, into the town of Oconto. The first election for county officers was held June 10, of that year. The electors met at the house of Col.David Jones, and their balloting resulted as follows: Rufus Heald, Treasurer; Merrick Murphy, County Clerk; Edward Hart, Assessor; William Brunquest, Register of Deeds; William W. Delano, Surveyor, Jonathan S. Hale was Chairman of the first Board of Supervisors, which met July 5, 1852.

A destructive fire occurred on the 3d of August, 1859. The Brunquest Building was burned. S. W. Spencer, A. Aspinwall, John Remick and Mr. Mitchel were sufferers.

About 12 o'clock Saturday night fire was discovered breaking out of the Wm. Brunquest's store building at the S-W. corner of Main and Superior streets, opposite Funke's Hotel from whence the alarm was first given. The fire department responded promptly, but the flames had gained to much headway to admit of saving the building where the fire originated, or the building next to it also owned by Mr. Brunquest, and occupied by Mrs. S. H. Waggoner as a store house for flour and feed. The buildings were both one-story buildings, one comparatively new, and they were soon destroyed, when the flames were extinguished with out further damage. The building where the fire originated was occupied as a store of general merchandise by Mr. Brunquest, and was the only one that contained a stove. Mr. B. states that he left but a little fire in the stove; but the fire started in that vicinity. About $200 or $300 worth of his goods were saved. The buildings were each insured for $500, and the stock for $2,000. Total $3,000. Mrs. Waggoner was uninsured, but considerable of the feed was saved after the fire. Her loss is about $300.

Evidently William and his family were in Menominee by 1885 as eveidenced by the following Oconto County Reporter, Feb. 21, 1885 article.

Mrs. William Brunquist, of Menominee, Mich., had been here during the week visiting acquaintances, friends and relatives.

William Brunquest has been engaged in the grocery business in Menominee for the past twenty years. He was one of Oconto's earliest settlers and engaged in lumbering with Paul McDonald. He built the residence now owned by Gov. Elect Scofield.

William Bunquest, retired, Oconto. Born March 19,1819, in New Brunswick, Canada. Came to Oconto, in 1849, worked by the month at the lumber business, then entered into partnership with James and T. W. Christiie, in a saw-mill, at Oconto Falls; continued one year.

In 1852, he opened a general store, which he continued until 1862, when he bought Jones' water-mill, ran it until 1869, when it was carried away; in June 1870, he rebuilt the mill, now owned by McDonald & Billings, and ran it until 1874.

In 1876, he again opened a store, and was burnt out in 1878. His residence is one of the finest in Oconto, having built it at a cost of about $6,500. He was elected the first County Treasurer of this county. Has been Clerk of the Board of Supervisors, and President of the Village Board.

William BRUNQUEST and Mary Ellen MESSENETT had the following child:
i. Mary Eliza4 BRUNQUEST was born in Oconto County, Wisconsin 6 Mar. 1853. Mary died 6 July 1853 in Oconto County, Wisconsin, at less than one year of age. Buried Evergreen Cemetery.

        William BRUNQUEST and Julia HANSCOM had the following children:
        ii.   Frank BRUNQUEST was born in Oconto County, Wisconsin 1866. iii.   William BRUNQUEST was born in Oconto County, Wisconsin 1870.
        iv.   Son BRUNQUEST was born in Oconto, WI Sept. 1871. Son died 11 Oct. 1872 in Oconto, WI, at 1 year of age.

6. Lydia3 BARNARD (Elizabeth L.2 HILLARD-MILLEDGE-BRUNQUEST-BARNARD , Robert1 HIBBARD) was born 1830. Based on age at date of death. Given name also spelled Lida. Lydia died 1875 Erureka, WI., at 45 years of age.

Death - Mrs. Lawrence, wife of Dr. Amos Lawrence, died at her home in Eureka, Wisconsin on Sunday the 17th inst. She had been ailing for some time past with cancer of the stomach which caused her death at the time above mentioned. Mrs. Lawrence was one of the early settlers of Oconto. Her maiden name was Lydia Barnard. She was half sister to Tho's Millidge, and Wm. Brunquest, and sister to Mrs. Geo. Smith, and Mrs.Wm. Adams of this city who was the Principal of our Public Schools. Those of our citizens who were acquainted with the deceased, will hear with the deepest regret of her death. Thus, "one by one" the early settlers are passing away and in a very few years at the longest, they will all have passed from our sight, and will live only in memory.

She married Dr. Amos LAWRENCE in Oconto County, Wisconsin, 23 Jan. 1859. Pre 1907 marriage index.

        Dr. was born in Vermont 1833. Dr. died January 1881 in Oshkosh, WI, at 47 years of age.

At Oshkosh, on Monday, 17th inst., Dr. Amos Lawrence, aged 67 years. Dr. Lawrence was at one time a resident of this city, settling here in 1856. He had charge of the public schools here for five years, filling the position with great credit. While here he married Miss Lida Barnard (since deceased), half sister of Thomas Millidge and Wm. Brunquest. At the breaking out of the war he enlisted and entered the army. While there he learned the practice of medicine. After leaving the army he opened a drug store in Eureka, this state, which business he carried on for some time, after which he removed to Oshkosh where he practiced of his profession until his death. The deceased was the father of Miss Minnie Lawrence, one of our efficient school teachers.

Dr. Lawrence is shown on the 1880 U.S.census living in Oshkosh, age 47, born VT. as were his parents, occupation dentist; wife Lynda, age 48, bora NY, occupation physician with his daughter Minnie age 22 born WT. and step-daughter Dora Morehouse, born NY.

She married William ADAMS. William was born Eastport, ME. 2. Apr. 1829. William died 10 Mar. 1901 in Oconto, WI., at 71 years of age. Buried Evergreen Cemetery, dates from gs.

William in 1880 US Census Oconto County with occupation listed as brickmaster. His age is 51, born ME, occupation brick mason, Marie is age 47 born ME, father born PA. His mother-in-law is living with him as well as a boarder by the name of Ernest Henschel. Children and years of birth from census.

PASSING AWAY - We learn with deep regret, that another old resident of this city has been called to her final home. Mrs. George Smith departed this life on Wednesday morning, the I4th after a lingering illness. She leaves a husband and four children to mourn her loss.
Mrs. Smith was one of the oldest residents, having passed her girlhood here. She was a sister of Messrs. Thos. Millidge and Wm. Brunquest and also of Mrs. Adams, and daughter of Mrs. Bernard, all of this city. Our citizens will remember that she lost a sister - Mrs. Lawrance of Eureka Wis.- during the past winter.
Thus one by one the friends or our early childhood are passing away, to that other and brighter world beyond the grave, where all is joy and love and peace. Death does not enter there.

The family have the warmest sympathies of this community, in this their deep bereavement.

Buried Block 7, Lot 8, Evergreen Cemetery. Also buried in this family plot is Douglas B. 14 mo., died 28 Aug. 1867, son of George and Arabella Smith.

George died 2 Nov. 1889 in Oconto County, Wisconsin, at 61 years of age. Recorded in Vol. 3, pg. 16. Parents listed as unknown. Buried Evergreen Cemetery, same lot as Charolette Block 22, Lot 12.

Listed on 1852 Property Tax Rolls as resident owner El/2 of NE1/4 Sec. 24, T28N, R20E and Sl/4 of SW1/4 of Sec. 18, T28NR21. George was one of the lumber barons of the county, with a home on the south side of McDonald street. He was the first elected mayor of the city of Oconto after it was chartered in 1869.

George age, 39, born NY and Charolette age 35, born Maine, are listed on the 1870 U.S. cencus hi the south ward, of the city of Oconto. Children are Mary age 12, Leonard age 9, Charley 7 and Herbert 5. One of George's occupations is mayor and he had considerable property.

ii. Leonard G. SMITH was born in Oconto, WI 21 Sept. 1861. Leonard died 14 May 1940 in Oconto, WI, at 78 years of age. Buried Evergreen Cemetery L.G. Smith, Block 7, Lot 8 along with parents. Age 80 years. There is also a child Eva, died 20 Jan 1891 born same day. daughter of L.G. and Emma. Emma died 19 Apr. 1955, age 83 plus Myrtle Smith died 1/22/1970 Wise. Rapids, WI age 78, buried in the family plot. He married Emma (?) SMITH Oconto Co., WT., 17 Apr. 1890. Pre 1907 marriage index.

Lenord G. Smith born WI, father born N.Y. mother Nova Scotia, enumerated on the 1900 census in ward of the city of Oconto. Lenard is age 39, married for 11 years to Emma, age 29 and they have had 5 children 3 living. They are Myrtle, age 8, George age 5 and Marian age 3.

9. Mary Ann3 PAULEY (Charolette2 HIBBARD, Robert1) was born in New Brunswick, CN 10 Apr. 1821. Mary died 7 April 1896 in Oconto, WI., at 74 years of age.

Deaths On Tuesday morning, April 7, at her home in this city, Mrs. Mary McDonald, aged 75 years, husband, Fraser McDonald, passed away four years ago, and they are survived by four sons and three daughters. Two of the sons were members of her household, the others being settled in homes of their own. Two daughters, Mrs. Folsom and Mrs. LeClair, living in Gladstone, Mich., and the third daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Johnson, living in Oconto. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Fr. Mead at the Episcopa church yesterday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. McDonald were among the early settlers of Oconto and were much respected.

She married Charles "Fraser" MCDONALD. Charles was born in New Brunswick, CN 1815. Cha was the son of (?) MCDONALD. Charles died 30 Jan. 1892 Oconto Co., WI., at 76 years of age. Oconto Buried Evergreen Cemetery, Oconto.

McDonald researchers believe he is younger brother of Paul, but not proven. This family was also at Oconto. Fraser is found on 1880 census age 66, iarm laborer, wife Mary with two sons Melville, age 32 boi New Brunswick and Hibbard age 19, born WI.

i. Paul4 MCDONALD was born in Nova Scotia, CN. circa 1842. Paul died 10 July 1924 in Oconto, WI., at 82 years of age. Buried in Block 40, Lot 15 as is Anne and his daughter Florence. He married Anne (?) MCDONALD in Wisconsin.

Anne was bora in Nova Scotia, CN. 1855.

Paul McDonald, while at work on the slab saw in Eldred & Son's mill, this city, Wednesday, slipped, and, in order to break the fall, put his hand out in front of him, which happened to be in the locality of the saw. His hand was nearly cut in two just below the thum diagonally, across to the writs, besides being fearfully mutilated. Dr. Beebe has the case in charge, and thinks that he will be able to save the hand.

Listed on 1880 U.S. census living in city of Oconto age 28, born Nova Scotia, occupati carpenter; his wife Annie age 25 born Nova Scotia, as were their parents; children all born Florence, age 11, Stella age 8, and Ray age 3.
ii. George P. MCDONALD was born Halliiax, N.S. 10 July 1844. He married Lillie Merry MCCOURT in Oconto, WI, 15Nov. 1877. Oconto VR, Married by G. R. Hall Witnesses Ida Thomas and Thomas Walker. His occupation lumberman, living in city of Oconto. Lillie was the daughter of M. D. MCCOURT and Eliza (?) MCCOURT.

Notes from McDonald researchers indicate named after an uncle George who was a sea captain in Nova Scotia.

George applied for citizenship on Nov. 2, 1876. He states he entered the country in Bangor, ME. on Nov. 3, 1861. The papers do not mention his parents, but his date of birth is correct.

He is listed on 1880 census as age 35, born New Brunswick, occupation Lumberman, wifi Lillie age 24, born NY, with son George age 4 months born WI. With one servant Mary Sharp age 20 born WI.

Douglas McDonald is a descendent of this line.
iii. Alien MCDONALD was born in Nova Scotia, CN. circa 1846. Alien died 8 Apr. 1886 Oconto Co., WI., at 39 years of age. Buried Evergreen Cemetery in Block 24, lot 5. He married Catherine "Kittie HOUSE Oconto Co., WI., 17 Apr. 1881. Oconto VR.

On the 1880 U.S. census living in city of Oconto and Alien is age 35, born Nova Scotia, occupation lumberman; his wife Kittie is age 20, born IL, father born VT, and their son Myrte age 2. Also living with him is Lizzie House, mother-in-law age 45, born MA. and sister-in-law Minnie House, born IL.

Little Minnie House, of this city and little Ellsworth Drown, of Vermont were married at the residence of Mr. Alien McDonald Sunday, by the Rev. C. R. Burdick, and in the evening, took their departure for their home in the Green Mountain state. They were undoubtedly, the most diminutive couple that were ever married in this city, but if the best wishes of the friends of the little bride are taken into consideration the happy couple will enjoy the biggest kind of happiness and experience Lilliputian prosperity.
iv. Charolette E. MCDONALD was born in Nova Scotia, CN.. She married John A. JOHNSON in Oconto, WI., Dec. 1867. Oconto VR. Witnesses T. Gilkeys and M. Baldwing performed by Thomas Walker. Relegious serviced 7:40 p.m.

v. Melville MCDONALD was born in New Brunswick, CN 1848. Melville died 30 Mar. 1915 in Oconto, WI., at 66 years of age. Buried Evergreen Cemetery in parents lot. There is also a Robert H. who died at Peshtigo 21 Apr. 1940 age 72. He married Hannah CHEFFINGS in Oconto, WI, 20 Aug. 1883.
