First Generation

    1. Moses' HARDWICK was born Lexington, Garrard County, Kentucky 1792. Moses died August 1879 Scott Township, Brown Co., WI., at 87 years of age.

He married twice. He married Angelique CHEVALIER Michigan Territory, circa 1824. According to Hardwick researchers they were married on July 11, 1824, by a justice of the peace. This corresponds with the time frame Judge Doty made an issue of the marriages contracts between whites and Indian women. He demanded that they be married under the current laws which the majority did.

Angelique died circa 1832. He married Catherine LAROCQUE Green Bay, Michigan Territory, 7 June 1835. Catherine was born in Green Bay, WI. 11 Dec. 1818. Catherine was the daughter of Basil Couillard LAROCQUE and Catherine BRUNET. Catherine died 31 Jan. 1904 Town of Scott, Brown Co., WI., at 85 years of age.

The first documented arrival of Moses into the Green Bay, is on July 16, 1816 as part of the troops with Col. John Milled from Mackinaw, brought into to rebuild Fort Howard after the war of 1812. He was a young man of age 25. Moses was one of the man that acted as mail carrier traveling from Green Bay to Chicago and Detroit by foot, and returning with the mail. After being discharged from military services Moses served as a guide and pursued farming for a livelihood.

On the 1850 census Moses is enumerated at Pittsfield, Brown County, as age 53, born Kentucky, occupation farmer; with wife Charolette, age 32. They have living with them Moses Jr.., age 13, Lewis, age 11; Catherine, age 9; Jane age 7; Elizabeth, age 5 and Polly age 2. Charolette and all children born WI. His assets are $350. On the 1852, first Oconto County tax roll, Moses is listed as owner of the Pensaukee mill site, which is later taken over by F. B. Gardner. Moses may have been owner in name only or was he a partner Mr. Gardner?

Moses is enumerated on the 1860 census, town of Pensaukee, with his wife Charolette with the surname indexed as Hardrick. Moses is age 67, born Kentucky, Catherine is age 41 born Wisconsin. Living with them is Louis, age 22, Polly age 13, George age 8 and David age 7 months, all born Wisconsin.

According to biography of son-in-law Daniel Bush married to his daughter, Jane, Moses moved to town of Scott in 1865. It appears this move included children Moses Jr., son David, and daughter Catherine married to Moses Rousseau who all appear in census records starting in 1870 in town of Scott. According to the biography Moses and Catherine had two additional children Henry and Emily who both died at the age of 2.

On the 1870 census Moses is living in the Scott, Brown County, post office Bay Settlement. Moses is now age 78, farmer; Charolette is age 52, their son David, age 10 and they have Polly Bribo age 11 and John Lemine age 5 living with them, plus farm laborer Oliver Duchane.

They are the children of daughter Polly who had married William Shane and died in 1880.

Luke and John plus the children of Moses with Charolette born before 1849 are listed on 1849 Menominee Indian Nation list of mixed blood Indians, who were paid to give up all their rights because of their mixed blood, thereby declaring themselves white.
