There was no single record of those who lost their lives in what remains the worst natural disaster in US history. The buildings housing record collection were destroyed along with many of the people who worked in them. With an estimated 1500 dead from the fire in Wisconsin it was necessary to bury that which was recognized as human remains with all expediancy to avoid rampant disease among survivors and volunteers assisting them. Identifying, reporting, and marking graves were activities far down the priority list. One mass grave in Peshtigo's Fire Cemetery holds more than 300 bodies. Wagons carrying the dead were lined up for 4 miles awaiting a place of burial in the only cemetery to offer space. Many  rural people were buried in unmarked graves where they died, or in what was once the wells for these homesteads, the locations of which will never be known. This list has been gathered from newspaper accounts,  lists of the recognized dead, first hand accounts found in books and magazines and any other sources available. It will be added to as names are found in the future.

Death By Fire
Peshtigo
October 7, 1871

Although most names will never be known, the ones we do know deserve to be remembered.
"Good men must die, but death cannot kill their names." --Proverb

Names of the dead since found in documents and archives, but not affiliated with a particular place of death:

From 1895 newspaper report
A partial list of those who perished in the terrible fire at Peshtigo in 1871 given in a Marinette paper, suggests that several families who at one time resided in this city (Oconto) were among the victims,
Charles Tousley, wife and three children being of that number. Mrs. Tousley was a daughter of Mrs. Marion Fisher, now a resident of the East ward, and beside her body was found a bible with plush and clasps burned away, and other relics of that sad time are in Mrs. Fisher’s possession.

Perrane Mr.  Nelson and Mrs. Victorine Burgoin and thirteen children, once residents of Depere and later of Peshtigo, WI., Mrs. P. was a sister of Mrs. Eleanore Martineau of Oconto - the later the mother of Antoine, John and P. A. Martineau.
