certificate from Belgium states that an infant boy was born on the 14th of
October at five o'clock in the morning to Petrus Everaert age 33 a laborer and
his housekeeper Justina De la Sorte, age 28 and named him Karel Louis. Louis
settled in Oconto, Wisconsin until he moved to Portland, Oregon; then to
Chapman, Oregon. He opened a country store and he and wife Mary raised
their 4 sons there. Chapman was a logging community near Scappoose,
Oregon. Scappoose is about 20 miles from Portland, OR.

Everaert joined the U.S. Army on January 10, 1916 - World War I. He was a
cook. He was gassed during his time in France & Belguim. He died in
1951 and is buried at the Willamette National Cemetary in Portland, Oregon.

Note: "Mary Dhondt was a very pretty lady and loved to wear big hats. When
Grandpa Louie bought the property in Chapman she cried when she got off the
train (where the old Kremers home was) because she liked living in Portland and
did not want to move to the country. But after awhile she loved it and
never wanted to go back to the city. She went blind because of diabetes.
She died in May of 1932."

Family Notes: Joseph D'Hondt was born in Zaamslag in the Netherland provice of Zeeland, his sister Maria Theresia was born there also. Zaamslag is located just over the border of East Flanders, Belgium. Joseph was employed as a butler and coachman for a wealthy family in Belgium. It was here that me met and married Cordelia De La Sorte of Ghent, Belguim. She was a cook in the same family. After their marriage they are believed to have settled in Doornzele where he operated a saloon. They had three childern in Belguim. Mary born in 1871, Matilda born 12 Mar 1874 and Elodia (Ella) born 3 Aug 1878. In 1881, the D'Hondts emigrated to the United States, settling in Oconto, Wisconsin. In Oconto a fourth daughter , Alice was born 22 Feb 1882.
The childern grew up and married as follows: Mary married Louis Everaert on 11 Apr 1893. They were married in Marquette, Michigan and then settled in Scappoose, Oregon. Matlida married Peter Kremers ,originally from the Netherlands, on 7 Jan 1895. They were married in Oconto and settled in Beaverton, Oregon. Elodia (Ella) married Edward Huisman on 8 Apr 1902. They were married in Oconto and made their home there. Alice married Frank Huisman Sr., brother of Ella's husband on 2 July 1906 in Oconto, Wisconsin and made their home there.
