Johanna was expecting their second child, Frederick, who was born in Concord, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. In Concord John and Johanna had several more children; Fred, Frank, Bertha, Albert, Ida, Anna, Martha, Johanna, Louie, and William.

The family lived in Concord until about 1884 when they moved to Abrams, Oconto County Wisconsin. In Abrams they lived above a hardware store. The children all met their spouses and married in the area.
